James Dawson and Matt Whyman Talk
Hey guys! Today as a part of a reward for achievement in English I got to go to a school in Stevenage with some other students to hear James Dawson and Matt Whyman give a talk on their new books Say Her Name and American Savage. It was a really lovely opportunity because I love meeting authors and hearing the stories leading up to the publishing of their books. James' book is a twist on the tale of Bloody Mary and he spoke a lot of his fascination and fear of the supernatural. Matt's new book is a sequel to his earlier novel The Savages, a story of an ordinary family a part from the fact that they eat people. Yep, that's what I said, they're cannibals.

After they finished speaking about their books they opened up the room for a short Q&A. I actually was the first to ask a question and it was directed toward Matt. I asked about how there aren't a lot of things that deal with cannibals, apart from maybe Silence of the Lambs or NBCs Hannibal and so had he watched any of these before writing. He said he hadn't due to the fact he wanted his work to be his work and it should come from the heart. And also he doesn't have Sky, but he asked me if it was good and I said yes, that I liked it.
Tumblr media
We were then given the opportunity to buy some of James' and Matt's books. Earlier they had spoken about other books they had written and I thought that Matt's book Boy Kills Man sounded the most interesting so I got that and I picked Say Her Name up too! A array of books were there to purchase including Dawson's books Being a Boy and This Book is Gay and both of The Savage books.
Tumblr media
I also was able to get me books signed which was amazing and really generous of both James and Matt. As I said before, I love meeting authors so I was able to say to James that I thought him writing a book for the LGBT community was amazing and he thanked me and said we'd see how well it would do! I hope it does well, he was such a genuinely nice person and if you can try and help someone through doing something you love and are good at, then why shouldn't you?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The event was organised by a local book shop in Hertfordshire and I would really just like to thank them, our School Librarian, my English Teacher, James Dawson and Matt Whyman for a lovely start to my day and an unforgettable opportunity. I can't wait to read Say Her Name and Boy Kills Man and tell you all what I think!

Book Unboxing | Between Lies and Secrets - Kimberley Hoar
I came home today and waiting for me was a book I had ordered on Saturday. I didn't expect it to get to me so quickly, I'm very happy with the length of time it took to get to me!
Tumblr media
I made a post about this book a few weeks ago when I found out that my friend had written and published it (here). It is simply amazing how creative people can be and that if you have the right determination you can self publish your work. I felt it only fair to support Kim in this, I mean every author's dream is to sell at least one book right? I can't wait to dig my way into this book, I'm sure it'll be well worth it! I seem to be supporting teenagers who self publish their work recently as I am currently reading Flowers in Bone Cages by 16 year old Sophie Glynn.

You can purchase "Between Lies and Secrets" at:
Amazon
Authorhouse
and remember to add it to your goodreads!
I really look forward to reading and reviewing this for you guys!

World Book Day!
In the UK it was World Book Day on Thursday. I didn't have the opportunity to make a post about it on Thursday as I went to see Wicked but today I went and redeemed my voucher for a book so I'll be talking about it now!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a part of World Book Day, schools give out £1 book vouchers which can be redeemed for 1 of 10 £1* books that World Book Day offer or can give you £1 off any book over £2.99**. This happens in leading book stores all over the UK. The books that are offered by World Book Day are novellas from well-known authors to introduce you into their work/series of books. For instance 2 years ago I got "Skulduggery Pleasant: The End of The World" By Derek Landy in exchange for my voucher. It's a perfect way to introduce kids into reading as the books vary from ages 2 - Young Adult.
*€1.50 in Ireland
**€3.99 in Ireland
Tumblr media
I've always loved World Book Day and this year some of the teachers in my school dressed up as book characters. There was Alice in Wonderland, Fantastic Mr Fox, Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, etc. It was amazing and put everybody in a good mood. I've been a fan since a young child when I was into the Rainbow Magic books by Daisy Meadows and they brought out "Hannah the Happy Ever After Fairy". Also in recent years Cathy Cassidy had a novella from her "Chocolate Box Girls" series called "Bitter Sweet".
Tumblr media
This year I didn't know any of the authors of the books, so I went for one of the 2 YAs "The Boy in the Smoke" by Maureen Johnson. I look forward to reading it and if I enjoy it, maybe picking up some of Johnson's books. If you received a voucher but don't particularly want a book, give it to a brother or sister or cousins and inspire them to read! There is also a competition to win tickets to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical but you have buy a book to be able to enter, so get going!
