TERRIBLE, BUT GREAT - CHAPTER THIRTY

SUMMARY:

“Harry Potter.” The cold burrowed into his flesh, the scent of cloying death and molding earth clogged his senses.

“The Boy Who Lived.”

A strange sense of loss and disappointment rose within him. That brilliant, yet cruel boy could’ve been so much more if he’d not stepped down this bloodied path.

Terrible, but great. He pitied this creature.

“Come to die.”

Harry Potter faced the flash of green light with the bravery of a Gryffindor and the broken heart of a Hufflepuff.

When Death gives Harry a third option, one that can save everyone he ever cared about, he takes it unflinchingly. Even when that means doing the impossible: falling in love with the enemy, Tom Riddle.

THIRTY EXCERPT:

“And you, Hatchling,” said Nagini, her eyes on Harry now. There was an air of contentment surrounding the two of them, as Tom stroked her scales. Harry’s heart swelled with warmth at the fond gaze Tom held for his familiar. “Have you agreed to learn how to better speak my language, Hatchling?”

“I’ve agreed to lessons, yeah,” said Harry. “It’d be nice to learn how to control it.”

“We’ll practice parseltongue tomorrow while everyone has gone to Hogsmeade.”

Harry sank in disappointment. “What?” he said, looking directly at Tom and not noticing his switch to English. “But I’ve been looking forward to the Hogsmeade trip. Aren’t you going? Don’t you have a plan for it?”

Tom raised an eyebrow. “Plan?”

“Yeah, do you want to get some sweets or check out the bookstore?”

“I’m not going.”

“What?”

“I don’t need anything,” said Tom, shaking his head. “Why would I go?”

Harry was at a loss now. He wasn’t sure why he felt so disappointed about the fact of missing a Hogsmeade trip. It wasn’t like he really needed to go either. But… I’d like to go with Tom. “I dunno,” he said, scrambling for a reason. “Uh, for a change of scenery?”

Tom folded his arms. “Harry, have you seen the grounds?” he asked with a sardonic lilt. “There’s plenty of scenery to take in. If you’re in dire need of the outdoors, we can always take the lessons to the grounds.”

“Not quite what I meant and you know it.”

“You know it’s rude to exclude the other party in the room from your conversation. Are you two fighting again?”

Huh? Wait, I wasn’t speaking in parseltongue?

Tom rolled his eyes. “This is ridiculous. You are not convincing me.”

“Yes, yes, forget I exist again, why don’t you?”

“Nagini, he’s being difficult.”

“Me?” protested Harry, shifting back to parseltongue when his gaze rested on Nagini. “I just would like to go to Hogsmeade.” With you. “And the others are going, too. Come with us. It’ll be fun.”

“A Hogsmeade trip is a waste of time if you’re not buying anything in particular,” said Tom, shaking his head. “I’m not interested.”

Nagini’s eyes were sharp as she eyed them both. She uncurled from Tom’s lap, slithering away silently, until she disappeared from the curtains. Neither Harry nor Tom noted her absence.

“But aren’t there other interesting places to visit? We could get a butterbeer.”

“It’s frivolous spending.”

Oh.

Harry blinked. Oh. That was right. While Harry knew what it’d been like to live without money of his own as a child, that had changed when he’d gotten his Hogwarts letter and discovered the wealth his parents had left him. He hadn’t exactly been ‘frivolous’ with his money, but he hadn’t paid attention to it either, not like Ron had often worried about money.

Even now, with his funds somewhat limited, he hadn’t really thought about it too much or what he’d have to do in the future to earn a living. But Tom, on the other hand, was on an assistance fund here at Hogwarts. The only reason he could attend the school at all was because of that fund. Though Tom had always appeared immaculate in his appearance, Harry couldn’t help but wonder now if his belongings were secondhand.

“Right,” whispered Harry. “I forgot.”

Tom frowned. “Forgot what.”

“Well… you haven’t got any family, so I forgot that also probably means you haven’t got money either.”

A mixture of embarrassment and anger flushed through Tom’s cheeks. His chest puffed up; the light in his eyes grew flinty.

Was a bit hesitant at first, but I guess I’ll post this here on tumblr. I’m currently working on a rewrite of an old time travel tomarrymort fic of mine. I would preface that I think the way I’ve written the fic isn’t really for everyone, but I suppose if it sounds interesting here’s the link.

Summary:

There were rumours. Mere whispers, spoken in the dark alleyways of Knockturn Alley and its underbelly slums, of a boy, or perhaps a young man, with green eyes and a strange affinity for the dead. A necromancer of some sort. Some said he lured people in to steal their souls. Others said that he would make the dead speak and reveal secrets thought lost - for a price, of course.

Voldemort did not know what the truth was, and he did not care to know. The only thing Voldemort was concerned with was if the boy would prove useful.

Harry was not particularly happy to find himself in the past, wearing somebody else’s skin, and without a single knut to his name. And he was even less enthusiastic to learn that he had caught Voldemort’s attention.

I know its very unlikely to happen, but what if somehow Harry choose to stay longer with the living even when death already call him? What would death reaction will be like? Should we be worried for theon, barty, evans and sirius?

Glad you know it is unlikely to happen lol anon. Harry is not gonna let anything stop him from visiting Death! It already sucks for him that he can only visit once a year!

If Harry- for some inconceivable reason- does choose to miss Samhain, he won't keep Death hanging. He will inform ... By those terrible messaging system that is rituals and creatures from hell (the way he did once). It will be terrible rude and inconsiderate- and Harry will never not care for his beloved Death that way

If, instead, he does miss the appointment with death because of people like Jugson- again- forget Harry' retribution, Death will indeed..do something whimsical.

See, the the thing is, the universe, the one Harry is in and the countless other ones, run with the mercy of the entities. They do choose to let them live and strive, but a mere whim could collapse them all. They are never kind or benign. Maybe apathetic? It is that apathy that lets the world go on their merry way and never know the misery, that is, the attention of the terrible entities.

Death was one of the same, until they had an apprentice. If his apprentice gets too lost in this world? Let it break. Let it burn. Oh, his apprentice lost some friends? That is alright. Time will soothe those aches. If not this year, maybe next century.

Okay, i know he is not important to the story, but what is flinch reaction to Harry get accepted to hogwarts eventhough he is technically a squib? Is he angry because he never get the chance? Idk why but i am very curious of this

That's a very good question, actually. Where squibs are only good for cleaning the floors and watching cats ( I thought it was an odd coincidence that both the squibs in hp canon had a deep attachment for cats), why was Harry admitted?

Flich must have been resentful, ran to Dumbledore to ask- why why why why? Why- when it was his turn, he had to be satisfied with being the caretaker, if he wanted to stay in Hogwarts- but this boy could attend the classes? Had the sorting hat on bis head as if he was one of the many students? He had been so grateful too, when Dumbledore arranged him this job. But it had become bitter instead, watching students enjoy what he never could, leave the school like he never could, forever attached to it with an unfulfilled resentment?

'So why this brat, Dumbledore? What does he have that I don't? Is it the money? Is it because he is a pureblood? Blood doesn't matter if you are a squib, does it? Or, is it the face? That pretty boy face-'

Flich would have spat and cursed. He would hate the boy, but he would feel betrayed by Dumbledore the most.

Of course, then the benevolent headmaster would explain how Harry is a special case, that he was not a squib at all, but suffering from a magical dilemma. He would recover, Ollivander had said. It wouldn't do to keep him away from education.

Flich would not understand at all. It is all the same, isn't it? He couldn't say any more to the headmaster.

He could make the new boy understand.

It is the shame... that even in the eye of the new kid... He remained invisible.

in book 5 when voldemort tries to possess harry it causes them both to experience unbearable agony. dumbledore says it's bc harry is too full of love. but like. voldemort has been able to possess good people before. the diary possessed ginny without a problem in book 2. yeah there's also the thing with lily's love.

but i think a cooler explanation would be if it's because harry is a horcrux so voldemort possessing him is basically trying to put 2 pieces of his soul back together. and it's said the pain of repairing yourself is supposed to be near unendurable.

Harry and Voldemort: share brother wands, share parts of souls, are two sides of the same coin, send dreams and visions to each other through their mind, both grew up in similar circumstances, both are orphans, and have been enemies since (Harry’s) birth… and you expect me *not* to ship them?
