i do appreciate the little visibility that misophonia is getting but i think some still don’t understand that it’s a serious disorder
in more severe cases, the sufferer experiences involuntary suicidal thoughts or violent impulses in response to trigger noises
when you’re pained and brought to tears and fits of shaking by the tiniest repetitive noise and feel like you’ll scream if you can’t get away that’s misophonia
when you skip meals just so you won’t have to listen to your family chew and ridicule your reaction that’s misophonia
when you have to isolate yourself and use white noise to block everything out because your senses are constantly being overloaded and you can’t focus on anything else that’s misophonia
when you have to distance yourself from friends and family because they refuse to acknowledge it that’s misophonia
it’s not just “getting angry when people eat and breathe”

Dont ever let someone tell you what you have isn’t real, or that how you feel isn’t valid. The only person who knows how you feel is you.Â

If you need to escape or get away from your triggers for now, that’s ok. You will get better at dealing with them in the future! Even people who have had disorders or conditions for years still struggle sometimes!

TW: description of triggers
This is a biggie for me because I tend to stay away from close relationships for fear of my misophonia ruining them. I had basically accepted that I would be single and alone for life because I didn’t want to subject anyone to my issues. I still struggle with this, but I think its important to understand that everyone deserves meaningful relationships if they want them, so even though it can get redundant, here’s something that might help.Â

Remember, no matter how weird or incomprehensible you think what you're going through is, there will always be people who try to, or even do understand it! Things like Misophonia/Misokinesia can feel very lonely, and those little tidbits online framing it as some crazy, one dimensional thing can make us angry. It took me a very long time to start opening up to people outside my immediate family, and that's ok! take your time, do your research, whatever makes you comfortable!Â

Alternatives to expensive hearing aids for misophonia
Even though they aren’t used as hearing aids for misophonia patients, they are still provided to help with triggers and drawbacks of misophonia. The problem is, if your insurance doesn't cover them, they can be very expensive i.e. up to 3000 dollars.
I personally haven't tried this, but the audiologist I went to said a few of her patients opted to get really nice earbuds that had a transparency feature (she said air pods, but not everyone has apple, there's other very nice brands out there too) She made sure to test the patients hearing to ensure that she could still hear well through the white noise she might play through them on a regular basis, and said there was no dulled hearing as a result of the buds.

These are what the hearing aids look like, there’s a quarter for size reference. You can see that they are very discreet, but the white noise/transparency helps with the triggers of misophonia for a lot of people (I don’t use the amplifying part of the hearing aid) it comes in different colors to match tour hair so it blends in, or if you want I think there are some fun colors as well!
(sorry for the weird grainy ear pic)
