Led Zeppelin // When the Levee Breaks (1971)
Album | Led Zeppelin IV
Writers | Memphis Minnie, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Robert Plant
About | The original, recorded in 1929 by husband-and-wife duo Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie, was inspired by the plight of those caught in the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. African-American plantation workers were forced to work on the levee at gunpoint, piling sandbags to save the neighbouring towns.
Heavily produced in the studio, this was difficult to perform live, which Led Zeppelin did only twice: once in a "warm up" gig in Denmark before their 1975 US tour, and again on their second night in Chicago. [source]
Genres | rock, album rock, british metal, hard rock, heavy metal
♡ Mood bravado, confident, epic, intense, rousing, swaggering, thrilling, wild, wailing

Richie Havens // Strawberry Fields Forever (1969) Album | Paris Live 1969 Writer | John Lennon, Paul McCartney About | Havens opened the Woodstock festival on Friday evening, and ended up going long — some three hours — when the other performers were caught in traffic. The producers kept asking him to extend his set, so Havens eventually ran out of songs, and ended up improvising “Freedom” on the spot.
“Strawberry Fields” had been in the world for less than three years at that point — the Beatles released it as a single in February 1967. Havens did the song justice with his mostly solo acoustic guitar performance. [source] Genres | folk, folk rock ♡ Mood amiable, comforting, earthy, hippie, intimate, liberating, organic, peaceful, relaxing, summer, uplifting, warm

While many people thought the song was about drugs, Waters claims it is not. The lyrics are about what he felt like as a child when he was sick with a fever. Procol Harum // Repent Walpurgis (1967) Album | Procol Harum Writer | Matthew Fisher About | The closing song on the brilliant debut album, Procol Harum, "Repent Walpurgis" was written by organist Matthew Fisher as a vehicle not only for his own fine playing, but for the band as a unit. A somewhat Bach-inspired keyboard figure from Fisher's Hammond defines the melody and is carried along by the stately rhythm of B.J. Wilson's drumming. Underneath this, Gary Brooker adds some darker undertones on the piano. But the real star here is guitarist Robin Trower, who comes out of nowhere with a frightening, Jimi Hendrix-inspired solo that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. A perfect ending to a fabulous, near perfect album. Funkadelic // Maggot Brain (1971) Album | Funkadelic (1971) Writers | George Clinton, Eddie Hazel About | Funkadelic leader George Clinton explains Maggot Brain as a state of mind, transcending the body and enjoying the expansive freedoms of The Funk. Achieving Maggot Brain is often accomplished with the help of narcotics. This song was recorded in one take. Clinton surrounded Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel with a massive amount of amps. He told Eddie to first play like he just heard that his mother had died, then to play like his mom was actually still alive. The result was one of the best-known funk guitar solos of all time.
