There is something to be said about working in nature. To be engulfed by its bounty. To hear the birds chirp. To feel the oxygen fill your lungs. It most definitely makes the brain function better. Allows us to disconnect from the challenges that we face daily and then really focus on the task at hand. . I was truly inspired by this lady sitting so peacefully in this pristine environment and so fully engrossed in her work. She never once looked up and I was there for over 45 minutes. Nothing seemed to disturb her. The focus was so strong. I only saw her from afar as I was very mindful of not being a bother to her. . It always needs someone’s drive, push and initiative to make things happen. Often we feel that what can one person do. Honestly it just needs one person’s push to make things happen. And that person could well be you. . The town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, deep in the Italian heartland, is a prime example of that. Ravaged by a devastating earthquake this town was pretty much abandoned. And was only revived by the effort of one person, who saw the potential of this beautiful medieval town, and went about slowly but surely not only bringing life back but also restoring it to its former glory. The community took a conscious decision to not allow new constructions. The focus clearly was to restore. . All this effort has created a fabulous boutique experience for visitors to this area in the form of Sextantio Albergo Diffuso. . This has been truly inspiring for G & I. Considering where our city is today I did not expect to be inspired the way I was when by some quirk of fate I got a chance to visit Raj Bhavin, the Governor’s estate at Walkeshwar earlier this week. . We truly felt like guests as we were escorted around the estate by the warm and courteous Raj Bhavan team. . The estate itself is sprawled over 46 acres and by their records has over 3000 different trees. There were several peacocks and many varieties of birds. And everything is immaculately maintained. . As we sat at the sunrise point and experienced the sunrise we were mesmerised by the stunning scene that unfolded. That entire moment and the estate truly showed us what Mumbai was like in the past and honestly what it’s potential is. This was that moment of inspiration. We as Mumbaikars can expect to get our city back and drive the powers that be to revive and recreate the city the way it was. . G & I chose to walk around and take in the green experience. This was truly invigorating despite the summer heat. It is very special to be ensconced in greenery within the city. This little forest in the heart of the city lifted our spirits. . Getting up at 4.30, showering and reaching the Raj Bhavan gate 5.45 am was quite a challenge. But in hindsight I am really glad that we did it. There are times that we become our own inspiration.... Gingerly my wife and I committed to go half way up to the Tiger’s Nest. That too by horseback, thinking that it will be the walk down that we shall do. Even the horseback ride was a bit scary for me. The horses knew the way and for some reason would prefer to walk right at the dangerous edge. Each time my heart would skip a beat. And the thought would cross my mind that should we turn around. At the Taktsang Cafe we sat down to have a coffee and some biscuits. And as we chatted we took the decision to walk ahead. My wife was the prime motivator. Again the thought was that we will turn back whenever it felt too much. But we never gave up.... and despite our low level of fitness we ever so slowly made our way to the revered monastery. There were many a fabulous view that we saw. Many many awe-inspiring spots. Many a walker who egged us along. The way back was even tougher. And got definitely concerning as the light faded. The last bit had to be managed with the torches on our phone. But at the end the most inspiring fact was that we did it. The way ahead.... the way ahead is the only way..... no sense in looking back. . As I prepared for today’s ride..... all I could think of was the road and the wind on my skin. I was very excited as it had been a long gap. I have been cycling at home of course very regularly. But it not really the same. Just that I have been lazy and the bad air quality also bothers me. . As a part of the prep I got the cycle spruced up. The Tyres checked. The gears oiled. All set to go. But I missed checking out the horn. So this morning the horn would not work. My fear kicked in. Most worrying for me are the strays. How will I deal with them..... A few pensive moments later I decided that I will not let my fear get the better of me. And without giving myself a second chance to think I was down in a jiffy, on the saddle and off. . The only thing you do as you cycle alone is talk to yourself. As I cycled through Mahim causeway and Mahim city centre I got thinking about the condition of our beloved Mumbai. And how we as a populace have pretty much ruined it. So what are my options.... I could choose to escape, i.e. move from here. Or I could choose to be apathetic, accept it and just go about life and cope. Or I could contribute as an individual and do something. The ideal choice is the last one of course. How much can we really run? As a world population we are ruining almost everywhere. Then where will we run? So we all have to stop being ostriches and do something. This storm shall not pass. It needs to be tackled and forcefully diverted. Humanity must act.... and must act now.... . My ride improved as I moved further south. Overall I enjoyed the morning immensely. Completing just over 28 kms was satisfying and inspiring. . A perfect Sunday afternoon it was to be... The midday sun was up. The beach was quiet. The sand was resting. The ocean was basking in the sun. Shimmering with delight. Waves of mirth up in spray. The winds were gentle and cool, softly caressing our being. Lulling us into this very joyous and happy state. To top it all we were spending an afternoon with some of our favourite people; at the beaches edge ensconced in greenery. The space we had come upon was truly zen. A very serene Buddha sat watch over us all afternoon. In this comfortable moment we were able to converse very easily. And with being nearly too old we were making plans for the after life. Life after work that is. If there is something like that. We were exploring the idea of building a little commune for us friends. And even though none of our children are coupled as yet, we were imaging what it would be like if they visited us at our commune with their significant others and perhaps their bratty offspring. Our own offspring were not bratty at all we decided. Enough said about the plans being made by some young oldies. We also had the good fortune to see the perfectly designed rooms of this amazing hotel. I don’t have the vocabulary to describe what I saw. All I can say that I was awestruck and very very inspired. Inspired to rise above what I have been doing. Inspired to create. I got charged anew. Something that has been missing in my life for sometime now. As I think back the entire time at the beach was inspiring. The long walk in the morning. The calm & inviting ocean. The winds. The soft soothing sands. The chatter with friends. The experience of beauty. It was a perfect time. What more can one ask from life. Today we met two really inspiring people - Matt & Meghana. Loved how they are living the life they truly desire. Making food for their guests with all their heart. Working tirelessly each day to bring on the table some truly inspiring food. From growing some of their own vegetables and herbs to making each dish and each drink they serve themselves. Truly amazing. And serving each item truly innovatively. This is what my coffee was served in today. Their own blend made in a machine that they operate with heart and jugaad..... Back on the road after a very long time. Felt safe good. The perfect breeze and the perfect zen feeling. . Met another cyclist as I stopped to fill some air in the tyres. And she truly inspired me. Every weekend she drives from Santacruz to Bandra. Then hires a cycle and does a ride of at least 16 to 18 kms. Amazing motivation. Will stop me from looking for excuses at times when I am feeling lazy. . So as we enter the time of true cheer and some reflection, let us make a pledge to live inspired. Living Inspired.... Over some years now I have been living with a lot of challenges. And quite honestly they have dampened my spirit. At some point I realised that I just have to take one day at a time and work through my challenges. Also I must say that each and every person I know has stood by me unflinchingly. That not only has been my saving grace but my greatest source of inspiration. The more I think about life the more I am certain that however long we have here, each one of us must live inspired. This has been shown the most clearly to me by my solidest rock, my wife, Mrs G. Ever so often she will ask me just as we lay down to sleep.... What inspired you today? And this gets me thinking about my day and then talking some. And nearly always I shall forget about asking her the same back. But she never grudges me that. She is just so happy hearing about my inspiring moments. And no matter how hard a day has been, when I think back there will always be something or someone that inspired me. This picture has been taken on one my truly inspiring days. It was a beautiful mountain day with just the right amount sunshine. Enough to warm you and not strong enough to burn you. Gentle and soothing. The mountain air was crisp. We were at an extremely secluded & pristine point of one of the tributaries of the river Beas. The water was pure and chilled, and it quenched the thirst of the soul. We had some home made biryani that was heated up on a small twigs fire.
