I recently completed this embroidery piece, called ‘Four Seasons’, depicting 4 sets of lungs, each paralleling the four seasons. The whole piece took over 45 hours to finish. I’m a full-time medical student so as much as I would love to spend every day creating pieces, I’m limited in the time I get to spend on embroidery. But one way of sharing my work with more people without having to recreate it for everyone, is through art prints.
After much trial and error, I was finally able to capture it well in photos and created postcards and square art prints of it.

‘Four Seasons’
This is a piece inspired by the four seasons - spring, summer, autumn, winter. Each design was born individually at first, with a different story attached to each design, but they were later compiled together and then embroidered in this 12″ hoop. This one is off to America!

Brushed Yellow Sabr 5″ piece
‘Sabr’ is often translated to patience, but more accurately it means to endure, to persevere. The arabic calligraphy has subtly been stitched over a splash of yellow paint, and the wooden hoop covered in ethically-sourced banana silk from women’s cooperatives in India.

embroidery: the telomeric effect
A karyotype, in this case it is that of a female’s, with the ends of the chromosomes highlighted with golden thread, to represent the telomeres. Telomeres are a bit like “the tips of shoelaces”, and are actually a series of DNA repeats. Every time a cell in our body divides, chromosomes can shorten at their ends, and then be rebuilt. Research has shown that unrepaired telomere shortening is one factor of the normal ageing process, amongst others, and can be somewhat malleable by a healthier lifestyle.

embroidered karyotype
with intricate stitching and vibrant threads, the piece captures the banding of the 23 chromosomes that make up our human karyotype; this karyotype in particular illustrates that of a biological female's, with XX chromosomes

embroidery print: A6 postcard or A4 art print, now on etsy
I realise that embroidery is something that takes a looong time to create, so actually making enough of it at an affordable price for everyone is a difficult feat.. the next best thing though - a print!
I would so appreciate anyone who is able to purchase one, or if not then anyone who shares - I’m unemployed and trying to support myself through med school right now. Little things like this really help things along.

Spent this weekend in the National Museum at the Leonardo, Bodies and Bones event, a supporting event in the A Life in Drawing exhibition celebrating Leonardo da Vinci's life works.
My piece Hands of Awe came 1st place in my medical school's annual artwork competition; this year the brief was to draw upon the work of da Vinci and depict our interests or medicine with it.
“We often forget that something as basic as our hands are actually something of great value; an overlooked blessing that we can use for good. With the hands raised in awe-filled supplication, I took inspiration from da Vinci's anatomical drawings to illustrate with embroidery that divine beauty is not just around us, in the universe, but also within us — sometimes all we need to do is stop to appreciate it.”

| Hands of Awe | The completed piece. The hands are raised, in awe-filled supplication, and the exposed anatomy illustrates the complex beauty that is not just around us, but also within us — sometimes all we need to do is stop to appreciate it.
“We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth [...].” [41:53]
