Sometimes there's a right time and a wrong time to write a story. This is personally why I need to have multiple projects at the same time.
Sometimes "time" has to do with the weather. Clearly, the story is an Autumn story, so I can only write it in september-november.
Sometimes it has to do with personal struggles. Two years ago I was struggling with anxiety, but now I'm struggling with understanding my ideas of romance. Those aren't the same stories.
There's one story I keep meaning to write, but keep putting off because I don't have the insight for it, yet. I did this when I was 12: I knew there was a story I'd write, but the protagonists were adults, and I figured I'd wait six years and write something else in the meantime (worth it, btw).
I think both Brandon Sanderson and Neil Gaiman have said something about waiting to write a specific story.
A lot of writers talk about the need to just write the story in order to overcome fear, writer's block, and to grow as a writer. But the thing is, it is also perfectly okay to wait and let an idea simmer and grow as you as a person grow. If there's a story you want to write, but don't feel ready to write, then it is a fine idea to put the story on the backburners and write a different story. It's okay to build-up to that story.
Sure, someday you'll have to face the challenge of putting that story into a tangible form -- but in my experience, it's a lot easier to do that after letting the story build inside, and letting it explode onto the page.
So here you have it: permission to have 100 on-going stories and write whatever is burning in your heart now.
(Small side note: Writing "the end" is a valuable experience, and for that reason, short stories are an awesome writing exercise).

Chapter 1 : Field Trip
Just as expected, Jungkook was back in action for the field exam after two days in the infirmary. Jungkook had just arrived at a conference room for a last minute meeting for all Novices that were taking the field exam. The first person to ask Jungkook about what had happened, besides the Guardians that had stopped by when he was still in the infirmary to get his official statement, had been Hoseok, a fellow Dhampir.
“How are you doing, kid?” Hoseok had asked after Jungkook sat next to him.
“I’m good. Just ready to get back to the field test,” he replied.
“Yeah, I talked to Jimin yesterday about what had happened. It’s crazy! People are saying that there were several Strigoi at the museum,” Hoseok said quietly.
Jungkook looked at Hoseok in confusion. “There was only one in that room.”
“I know that, but I overheard Jin talking to someone on the phone and they made it sound like there was more than one at the museum.” Jungkook wasn’t sure what to say to that. If what Hoseok was saying was true, then there was a huge gap in Guardian security or even worse, someone was tipping off the Strigoi. They were in a lot more danger than what he thought. “I wonder if that is why we are all gathered today,” Hoseok mused. “Not just to talk about the Strigoi you fought, but also about a security breach.” Before Hoseok could continue speaking, a Guardian walked to the front of the conference room. Jungkook looked around to see if he could spot Jimin, but the room was not well lit.
“Attention all Novices!” A Guardian at the front of the room said. Everyone’s posture straightened, a strange silence filling the room. The Guardian stood tall and the energy he gave off was that of pride and assertiveness. Jungkook had recognized this Guardian from a few months ago when the Moroi queen had come to visit St. Vlad’s for a holiday celebration. “Some of you may recognize me, I’m Guardian Choi. We’re going to keep this meeting short so that you can all get back to your field exam.” The silence in the conference room was uncomfortable and Jungkook looked around to see that there were many full-fledged Guardians in the room. Jungkook’s leg began to shake in anticipation of what Guardian Choi would say next.
“As you all know, there was an attack two days ago at the Natural History Museum. Since the attack we have been gathering information to get a clearer picture of how and why that attack happened. This investigation is still underway and as a safety precaution, you will be seeing more Guardians here at St. Vladimir’s Academy. There is nothing to be worried about. We just want to make sure that the Moroi continue to be protected, as they should, and that you Novices are continuing to receive the highest quality of education. It is imperative that you are all ready for what is out there. We are extremely lucky that no one died as a result of this attack.”
There was a moment of silence, so that everyone could take in what had been said. Jungkook wanted to scoff at Guardian Choi’s attempt to placate the Novices in telling them that there was no danger. Jungkook had a lot of time to think about the Strigoi attack at the Natural History Museum and everything about it had left him feeling unsettled and more on edge than he had previously been.
“With all of that being said, if there is anything that you all need to know, we will make sure to communicate that to you,” Guardian Choi continued to say.
“Which is code for, ‘don’t ask us anything’,” Jungkook heard a Novice mutter under their breath.
“You are all dismissed.”
As everyone filtered out of the room, Jungkook’s mind replayed the words of Guardian Choi. He found it hard to believe and ridiculous that Guardian Choi wasn’t going to say more, not that Jungkook was looking for recognition. He just wanted answers.
“Well that whole thing was unnecessary and uneventful. Jin’s gonna be let down when I tell him about this,” Hoseok said as he followed Jungkook out of the conference room.
“He seemed too calm about all of this,” Jimin chimed in from behind. Jungkook turned around, surprised at Jimin’s sudden appearance. “I came in right before the meeting started so I found the first seat available. Didn’t want to get chewed out by Guardian Lee, again.”
“It’s strange that they are adding more Guardians to patrol and guard the school, but they’re telling us to continue as if all it was a minor incident,” Hoseok said. “What do you think, Jungkook?”
The three of them paused in the hallway that was becoming less and less crowded. Jungkook took a deep breath and replied. “They’re hiding information from us. Either it’s because they don’t know enough or because they are too blind to see that they need all the help that they can get.”
“Yeah, they are definitely hiding something from us. I should talk to Jin and see if he’s willing to share anything,” Hoseok said. Jimin laughed and patted his back.
“Good luck with him.”
Hoseok laughed at Jimin’s comment and nodded his head. “Thanks, I’m going to need it. I’ll see you guys later.”
“Taehyung is gonna be pissed when he hears about this meeting,” Jimin said once Hoseok disappeared at the end of the hallway. “He got into a fight with his parents last night about how the Moroi need to be trained in using their elements so that they can support Guardians and show the Strigoi that they stand no chance against us.”
“I’m sure his parents didn’t take that well,” Jungkook said as they both began to walk down the hallway to find their Moroi.
“They weren’t happy.” Jimin paused for a moment, contemplating whether or not he wanted to continue sharing his thoughts. “No one will say it,” Jimin started to say in a quiet whisper. “But I think his parents are blaming him for putting himself in harm's way. They don’t think any of this would have happened if Taehyung just followed the crowd and didn’t go off and do things on his own.”
“That’s stupid!” Jungkook exclaimed. “Taehyung did nothing wrong. It was just the wrong place and the wrong time for us. Anyone could have been in that star room and been attacked.”
Jimin stopped walking for a moment. “But what if it wasn’t the wrong place and the wrong time?” Jungkook froze and stared at his best friend.
“What do you mean?”
“Listen, I don’t know why that Strigoi was there, but what if that Strigoi was targeting us? What if it was waiting for us to get in a place where it could easily ambush us? It can’t be a coincidence that a Strigoi targeted a small group that a royal Moroi was part of.”
Jungkook had certainly considered this scenario while he was recovering in the infirmary. If it was the case, then his best friends were in real danger.
“The only way to know for sure is to get out of Saint Vlad’s and see what happens,” Jungkook reluctantly said. He didn’t want or plan to use Taehyung as bait, but that if they really wanted to know then they would have to set up a trap.
“Well, setting aside putting my best friend in danger, I don’t think that we are strong enough to pull something off like that successfully,” Jimin replied. “Not that we aren’t good at what we do, but we don’t have much of a track record when it comes to fighting and killing Strigoi.”
“Then let’s hope that the Guardians figure out if the attack was an accident or planned,” Jungkook said as he continued to walk down the hallway with Jimin.
“And if it was planned, I hope they catch who was behind it,” Jimin added. Jungkook nodded his head and they exchanged good-byes so that they could meet up with their Morois, with Jimin heading to the Moroi boys’ dorms and Jungkook heading to the Moroi girls’ dorms. It was going to be the first time that Jungkook had seen you since he first woke up in the infirmary after the attack. Although it had only been a few days since he had since you, it had felt longer. He had been getting used to seeing you all the time and it felt weird to suddenly not see you.
Jungkook thought back to when he had last seen you and a feeling of regret pooled at the bottom of his stomach. Amidst all of the chaos, he had forgotten to ask how you were doing. Were you okay after that happened? Did the attack leave you fearing for yourself? Did you feel safe?
“Good evening,” you said as you stood at the entrance of your dorm room.
“Am I late?” Jungkook asked. You laughed and shook your head.
“No, you’re fine. I’ve only been out here for a moment,” you replied.
Jungkook nodded his head and took a moment to take in your appearance. If he hadn’t known any better, he would have thought that nothing out of normal had happened to you within the last few days. If you were still feeling shaken up or disturbed by the attack, you were doing a good job at hiding it. Jungkook wished that he were better at hiding how he felt. If he was going to a good Guardian, then he would need to figure out how to not make himself into such an open book. “How are you doing?”
“I’m alright. There was a meeting for all Novices taking the field exam, so that’s why I’m running a little late. How are you doing?” Jungkook asked as you both walked outside of the dorms towards the main building where all Moroi classes were held.
“I’m fine. Can I ask what the meeting was about?” You replied. Jungkook took a moment to meet your gaze, and found you looking at him with curiosity sparkling in your eyes. Even if he didn’t want to answer your question, there was no way that he could deny you with the way you were looking at him.
“The Guardians said that they were upping security and told us to continue with business as usual,” Jungkook said. You scoffed in reply and Jungkook nodded his head. “Yeah, it’s stupid, but they want us to pretend like everything is okay. Maybe they think that one day it will actually be true.”
“It must be easy for them to think that way,” you remarked, with slight disdain laced in your voice. Jungkook mimicked your panic when he saw your eyes widen. “It’s nothing personal,” you said as you waved your hands in front of your body. “It’s just that the Guardians are trained to fight and can kill Strigoi. People like me, Moroi, can’t defend themselves. We are helpless in the face of danger.”
Although Jungkook hadn’t given much thought to Moroi learning how to fight, he could understand your frustration. He would be frustrated too if he were in your shoes. It had always been that way -- Dhampirs train to protect Moroi, even though every Moroi has an elemental power, and the Moroi live with the protection given by Dhampirs. That system seemed ridiculous, especially considering the fact that if given the proper training Moroi could have a fighting chance against Strigoi. Jungkook even began to wonder if Moroi and Dhampirs fought together, side by side, would Strigoi be less of an issue.
“Forget about what I said,” you said, when Jungkook failed to vocalize his thoughts. He wanted to reassure you that your frustration wasn’t misplaced and that he wasn’t offended that you found disgust with his superiors' nonchalance towards what happened. But he was too late, you were already walking ahead of him. He needed to catch up with you.
The whispers of his and Jimin’s heroic actions back at the Natural History Museum loudly permeated through the hallway as Jungkook quietly walked by your side to your first class, his thoughts consumed with what had been said during the meeting and his conversation afterwards with Jimin.
“They are wrong to act as if nothing is wrong,” Jungkook quietly said after catching up with you. “It’s not fair, especially since it leaves you at the mercy of Strigoi and Dhampir.”
Jungkook’s shoulders sagged in relief when he saw from the corner of his eye a small smile appear on your lips.
“Thank you,” you whispered. It didn’t go unnoticed on Jungkook’s end when you took a pause before asking him what had been on your mind all morning. “Are you okay?” You whispered to him as you walked down the hallway together. Jungkook looked at you for a moment and nodded his head.
“I’m fine, but everyone looking at us is,” Jungkook said trailing off, uncertain of how to describe the off-putting feeling of people whispers that were clearly about him.
“Yeah, all of the sudden attention is strange,” you replied.
“And unwanted,” Jungkook muttered. You laughed while looking into his doe-eyes. You would never say it out-loud, but his eyes were the most beautiful eyes you had ever seen. No Moroi stood a chance when it came to his eyes. There was not enough appreciation in the world for brown eyes.
Jungkook smiled at you and for a moment the whispers in the hallway faded away, and it felt like it was just him with you. A comfortable silence fell between the two of you, until you spoke up to ask the question that had been nagging your soul.
“Are you feeling better?” You asked. Jungkook blinked and took a moment to ponder over your question. In truth, he felt stressed and worried over the field exam, the attack at the museum, and the nonchalance of his superiors, but he didn’t want to worry you with his worries.
“I’m alright,” Jungkook finally replied. “Just doing what needs to be done.”
You nodded your head in understanding. You could tell that Jungkook wasn’t ready to talk about how he really felt and you hoped that he had someone he felt comfortable enough to talk to.
“We better get to class before the bell rings,” you said after a student accidentally bumped into you. “I don’t want to sit in the front of class, again,” you said. “It feels like every little thing I do is seen by the teacher.”
Jungkook laughed in understanding and followed you into your first class of the day, World Civilizations. Without missing a beat, you took a seat towards the back corner of the classroom. You wanted to talk more with Jungkook before class started and you wanted to do so without prying eyes or ears. The walk to class was already unsettling enough as it was with people staring and whispering while Jungkook walked with you to your class.
“Do you know when you are getting your molnija mark?” You asked once the both of you had settled down into your seats.
Jungkook fidgeted nervously with his hands as he momentarily thought back to Guardian Lee telling him about the mark back when he was resting in the infirmary. “It’s tomorrow, after classes.”
“That’s pretty soon,” you remarked as you pulled out a purple spiral notebook and an erasable pen from your backpack. Jungkook nodded his head, the fidgeting continuing. “Would it be okay if I came?” Jungkook whipped his head to look at you in surprise. Mistaking his surprise for something else, you continued to speak. “It’s just, I’ve never had the chance to see someone get their mark. And I’ve heard that it’s significant for a Dhampir to get a molnija mark.”
He hadn’t expected you to ask if you could come, but it made sense. As you had heard, getting a molnija mark was special, especially as a Novice. For a Novice, getting a molnija mark before receiving the Promise mark was almost unheard of. “Of course!” He exclaimed, with a little too much enthusiasm. You smiled at his response and opened your mouth to reply, but was cut off with the teacher walking in and announcing the start of class.
“We can talk more later,” you whispered before setting your full attention to the lecture.
But later never came. The teachers at St. Vlads hardly wasted any class time with anything that took away from learning and it wasn’t until mealtime that Jungkook was able to socialize again. He made his way to sit with Jimin and Taehyung outside of the feeding rooms after leaving you to enter with your Moroi friends. They giggled and whispered after he had told you that he would be nearby if you needed him and that he would come by to walk you to class a few moments before the end of the meal.
“Have people always been this annoying?” Jungkook grumbled as he sat down with them on the couch.
“Yeah, they have,” Jimin said, unbothered by his surly attitude. He passed a couple of triangle kimbap to Jungkook. “It’s just that you’ve been so caught up in your studies that you failed to see how annoying people can be.”
“It’s why it’s fun to watch girls flirt with you,” Taehyung chimed in. “You’re so focused on training to be a Guardian that you don’t even see it.”
“Girls have been flirting with me?” Jungkook incredulously asked with a large mouthful of rice in his mouth.
Taehyung guffawed and Jimin was barely able to contain his own laughter. “Did you not see how Y/N’s friends were looking at you when you walked her to her lunch table, Jungkook?” Taehyung asked with mirth dancing in his eyes.
The tips of Jungkook’s ears turned red and he shook his head. “They’re just like that because of what happened at the museum.”
“Mmhmm,” Taehyung replied. Before Taehyung could continue to tease him, he was called over by one of the attendants in the waiting room.
“Your regular is here, Mr. Kim.”
Taehyung beamed and quickly followed the attendant to feed.
Years ago Jungkook would have wrinkled his nose at the interaction, but recently he learned to dismiss the feeling of disgust and accept the reality. Moroi needed to feed and it was better to feed on a willing person than an unwilling person. Granted it wasn’t like it took a lot to convince a person to be feeder. The bite from a Moroi or a Strigoi would release endorphins through the vampire’s saliva, which would cause the person being fed on to feel intense pleasure. Although Jungkook no longer felt uncomfortable at the thought of feedings, he did not have the desire to watch a vampire feed. The very idea was terrifying for him.
“I’ve been thinking lately,” Jimin said. Jungkook swallowed a bit of his kimbap and playfully smiled.
“Oh no.” Jimin rolled his eyes and bumped his shoulders against Jungkook’s shoulders.
“It’s not like, you little shit,” Jimin replied. “I’ve been thinking about the future and what we’re gonna do.”
Jungkook turned to him, his eyes widening. “What do you mean? I thought you had it all figured out. You’re gonna guard Taehyung.”
“Of course I’m going to,” Jimin started to say with the utmost confidence. “But it doesn’t have to be just me.”
“What do you mean?” Jungkook asked.
“You know, most royals require two Guardians to watch over them. I know it might be insane to have two Novices ask to guard a royal, but if you want, you could petition to be a Guardian for Taehyung,” Jimin suggested. “I know that you want to avoid guarding high-profile Moroi, but you wouldn’t be alone and the both of us could look after Taehyung together.”
Jungkook’s mouth dropped at Jimin’s suggestion, the triangle kimbap long forgotten. The thought of guarding Taehyung with Jimin was very alluring, but he did not want to overstep any boundaries or insert himself in a place where he should not be. Guarding Taehyung was not a bad idea at all. He was friends with Taehyung and it would be better to guard someone that he knew and enjoyed spending time with, instead of risking getting stuck with a Moroi that had a nasty personality.
“Really? Are you sure?” Jungkook asked just to make sure that Jimin’s offer wasn’t empty.
“Of course! We’ve all known each other for years, and if you want to, it would be great to stay together and guard Taehyung.”
“Is Taehyung okay with this? Does he know about this?”
Jimin laughed and nodded. “Yeah! He’s the one that brought it up, actually. We’ve talked about it a few times and now seemed like a good time to bring it up to you.”
Jungkook blinked and nodded his head. He wasn’t quite sure what to say. Guarding Taehyung would solve his problem with not knowing what to do after graduation. Although the idea of guarding a royal was not Jungkook’s cup of tea, he started to think that maybe it wouldn’t be too bad because Jimin would be with him and he actually knew Taehyung.
Jimin could see the gears turning in Jungkook’s head and spoke up. “You don’t need to make a decision now, but we want you to know that we are an option.” Jimin patted Jungkook’s shoulder and they both smiled at each other. “You don’t have to do this alone.”
Jungkook was taken off guard by the kind sentiment and did his best to school his features so that it couldn’t be seen how much that simple phrase touched him. When was the last time that he felt like he wasn’t alone in all of this?
“I --- I don’t know how to not do this alone,” Jungkook said, still stunned.
Jimin continued to smile brightly. “That’s okay, you can just take it one step at a time; start with little things.” Jungkook nodded his head, unsure of what to say. A brief moment of silence and both of them were pulled out of their moment when the familiar bell signaling the end of mealtime rang. “I’m gonna go get Taehyung, so that we can go to his next class. I’ll see you later.”
With a final pat on Jungkook’s back, Jimin left to find his Moroi. Looking around the waiting room, Jungkook saw that you were talking to the receptionist at the front desk. He saw that your backpack was in a cubby, and decided to carry it for you so that you could continue your conversation.
“Thank you,” you said with a bright smile, as you walked over the cubby. Jungkook nodded and followed you to your next class. He would have asked you how your lunch was or what you thought of your last two classes for the night, but there were too many people in the hallways and a conversation felt impossible without people staring and murmuring.
Your fourth period class passed by in a quick blur for Jungkook and before either of you knew it, he was walking with you into your fifth period class -- the last class of the day. As you had with all of your classes, you took a seat in the back of the classroom to avoid any unwanted attention. Jungkook followed his usual routine of scanning the area and taking note of everyone in your class. He wouldn't put it past a Guardian to stage a “Strigoi” attack, even if he had just barely been discharged from the infirmary. Jungkook had been so caught up in his observations that he barely registered with your art teacher starting class. He blinked, pulling himself out of his intense observations to hear your teacher talking about a two week-long project. He felt you tense next to him, but this came to no surprise to him. Within the first few days of “guarding” you Jungkook found out that you were not an artist, although he made no comment about it. If anything, he felt bad that you had to sit through a subject that you clearly did not enjoy or feel comfortable with.
Right after the teacher finished explaining the expectations for the project you started to pull out what you needed, which consisted of a very well kept notebook for sketching and a couple of pencils.
“I’m sorry about earlier,” you whispered to him as you opened your sketchbook. Jungkook turned to you, surprise written all over his face. “You know when my friends wouldn’t shut up by the feeding rooms.”
“Ah... It was nothing,” he lied while scratching the back of his head. “No worries.”
“Are you sure? I feel bad about it. I know that you aren’t into all the attention that people have been giving you for what happened. I just don’t want you to feel uncomfortable or anything,” you said, trailing off towards the end.
“According to Taehyung this is something that’s happened plenty of times before the attack, so it’s not the end of the world,” Jungkook replied to assure you that he was not overtly upset by what had happened, he had just been irritated. He didn’t think it was worth spending too much time thinking over it.
“Oh ok,” you said.
Silence followed, as you pulled out your phone to look for inspiration and potential reference ideas for your project.
Jungkook continued his assessment of the environment for anything amiss. He noted the posture of the newly placed Guardian at the right side of the room. He looked for the tell-tale signs of a “Strigoi” attack from the Guardian, but found nothing in the Guardian’s countenance that would suggest any surprises. Jungkook then took note of the students in the classroom. He could see nothing amiss as Moroi spoke freely with each other as the Dhampirs in the room kept alert for any challenge that could occur during the field test.
“Do you like art?” You asked, out of blue. Jungkook blinked. He was taken off guard by your sudden question, but it wasn’t unwelcome.
“I guess it depends on what kind of art it is,” Jungkook began to say. “I don’t mind going to art museums and looking at paintings and sculptures. When I’m bored in class or just bored, I’ll doodle and I’ve gone to a couple paint nights with friends, but I really like photography and videography.”
“Do you do it often -- taking pictures and filming things?”
“Only when I’m going out. It’s hard to find time to take pictures or film during school.” His last year at St. Vlad’s kept him so busy that he was certain that his camera was covered in dust. If the trip to the museum hadn’t taken place during the field exam, he would have brought his camera to take videos and pictures of his friends and things that caught his eye. Jungkook had a feeling that he already knew the answer to his question, but it was polite to ask and there was a chance that his guess could be wrong. “What about you?”
“I’m not really good at art, but I’m trying,” you sheepishly admitted.
Jungkook nodded in understanding. Although he wouldn’t be the first to admit it, he knew what it was like to struggle at something.
“But I like looking at art and because of this class I’ve come to appreciate the impressionist movement,” you continued to say. The conversation paused as you thought of an idea for your project and wrote it down on a sticky note.
“What are you going to do for your project?” Jungkook asked.
“I’m not really sure. I know for sure that I want to paint and I’m thinking of using watercolor as my medium,” you replied. “Professor Lin said that theme was ‘Through the looking glass,’ -- whatever that means.”
Jungkook chuckled with you. He was not envious of you working on this assignment.
“Is Professor Lin letting you use whatever medium you like?”
“Yes, he is, which is nice. I suppose I shouldn’t complain too much. I’d rather choose my medium and have a vague-ish theme than not being able to choose my preferred medium.”
“Me too. It takes off the stress of having to worry about using techniques that you’re not familiar with,” Jungkook agreed. “Anyway, I should let you get back to it.”
With a nod of your head, you immediately get back to doing research on your phone. Jungkook took this time to once again survey his surroundings and for a moment things felt like they used to -- before the Strigoi had almost killed him and his friends. Jungkook froze at the thought and felt a deep pit settle in his stomach. Everything in the classroom faded away as it finally hit him; he had almost died. It wasn’t the first time that his life had been at risk of death, but he was older now and he could feel things more clearly. He wondered if the others -- Jimin, Taehyung, and you -- had the same realization. He looked towards Jimin and Taehyung who sat at the front of the classroom. Taehyung was deeply concentrating on his phone while Jimin was smiling at his best friend. Maybe they didn’t feel as he felt or they were better at hiding it.
Jungkook rolled his shoulders and blinked to bring him out of his thoughts. A moment like this in the real world would have put him and the Moroi he would guard at risk. He couldn’t afford to get distracted by his emotions now. He needed to be here and now.
The class passed by painstakingly slowly, but Jungkook held firm in his concentration. He knew that the look on his face was not pleasant because whenever anyone would turn to look his way they would quickly look away. As he walked you back to your dorm, Jungkook wondered if he should ask you if felt as he just did during class, but he didn’t want to accidentally cause you to think of it if you hadn’t thought about it yet.
With a quick goodbye, Jungkook made his way to his dorm and looked out the windows to see the morning Sun slowly rising. As the Sun’s rays began to illuminate the hallway that only contained tired Dhampirs trudging to their rooms, Jungkook was reminded that this whole process would be repeated in less than twelve hours. He would wake up again right at sunset and would mentally prepare himself for the night that was to come. It had only been a day since his discharge and the monotony of the field test was getting to him. Upon entering his room, Jungkook went to the window to quickly close his black blackout curtains and lay down on his bed. The worries of the coming days could wait. For now he needed to rest.

Pairing: Hoseok x Reader
Genre: Soulmate!AU, angst, fluff
Word Count: 1.5k
Prompt: sun and moon
Warnings: None
Summary: Everyone was born with a red string of fate bestowed by the gods, except for you. At first it seemed unfair to be left without a soulmate, but you eventually came to terms with the cards that you had been dealt. Even if you didn’t have a soulmate, you could still love.
Author’s Note: I wasn’t expecting to write this, but life has a funny way of doing things. It hasn’t been easy to write lately because I am too consumed by Haikyuu and I’ve been in this really weird funk that I don’t know how to get through. This scenario is for the BGW Bingo Bash and I can now proudly proclaim “bingo!” © Found is copyright monggu-eomma. Do not re-post, modify, and/or translate this piece of writing without my permission.
“You know, you’re so lucky Hobi,” you said as you leaned your shoulder against your best friend’s shoulder. You sat together on the couch in his living room, mindlessly watching whatever was playing on the tv.
“And why am I so lucky?” He asked, looking at you with a playful glint in his eyes.
“Because you have a string,” you replied. Although you couldn’t see the red string wrapped around his left ring finger, you were still envious of what he had.
Hoseok was taken aback by your sudden statement. He rarely spoke to you about the red string of fate, as it was a sore subject for you. He could count on one hand the number of times that you had spoken to him about it and every conversation concerning the matter left you with tears welling in your eyes. You had always reassured him that you had accepted your fate, but Hoseok could see with each reassurance that you uttered that you were hurting. “They are so lucky to have you.”
“I guess,” Hobi replied and you were surprised, to say the least, by Hoseok’s indifference. “I’m not sure if they would be happy to have found me whenever we find each other,” Hoseok confessed. Hoseok had never shown a lot of enthusiasm for his soulmate and you figured that it was because he didn’t want to brag about having a soulmate. The lack of a red thread around your finger was a sore subject for you and Hoseok’s confession made you realize that you weren’t only one who struggled with the red string of fate.
Wrapping both of your hands around Hoseok’s right hand, you looked into his eyes. “You are amazing, Hobi. One day your string is going to lead you to your soulmate and I know that they will be happy and grateful to have you in their life. I may not have a string, but every day I am thankful because I have you.”
Tears gathered in Hoseok’s eyes at your words as he hugged you tightly. “I love you,” he mumbled with his lips against your hair.
“I love you, too,” you said in reply. It wasn’t uncommon for you and Hoseok to express your love for each other. You had known Hoseok for so long and it was only natural for you to love each other, even if it wasn’t the kind of love that was bound by the red string of fate.
After breaking away from the hug, you looked at your phone to check the time and sighed. “It’s late. I need to go home. I have a long day at work tomorrow,” you said with regret in your voice.
Hoseok nodded his head and smiled. “Text me when you get back home, so that I know you made it back safely,” he said.
“Of course!” You replied. Before you could stand up, Hoseok took your hand in his and pressed his lips against your forehead.
“Thank you,” he said.
You wanted to say that you should be the one thanking him for always being there for you and for being your friend, but you kept those thoughts to yourself. Instead you stood up and smiled at him. “I’m always here for you.”
As you made your way home, you thought only of Hoseok. He was such an amazing person and you couldn’t imagine your life without him. Although you had always known that one day that your friendship with him would diminish when he found his soulmate, you had long since decided that you were going to make the best of your time with him. The gods had left you to your own devices and it was up to you to make the best of your situation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bringing your coat closer to your body, you waited at the bus station for the bus to come. It was a particularly cold Autumn night, the light from the full moon doing nothing to provide warmth. A cold shiver ran down your spin as a harsh cold wind blew orange and red leaves on the street. It had been a very long day at work and you were looking forward to coming home and making yourself a nice cup of tea to warm and calm your nerves.
As you waited for the bus to come, your thoughts drifted to your grandmother and the stories that she used to tell you. The story of the red string of fate stood out to you, especially since you had spoken about the red string of fate with Hoseok the previous night. The story spoke of the ancient Chinese gods tying an invisible red string around the fingers of those who were destined to meet each other in a certain situation or help each other in a certain way. The ancient deity that was in charge of the red string was said to be Yue Lao, the lunar matchmaker god. Your grandmother told you that the two people connected by the red string were destined to be lovers and partners for all of eternity, regardless of circumstances. She also told you that this red thread is what had brought your grandparents together and subsequently, your parents together. Although the story of the red string was supposed to excite you, it always left you feeling hopeless and alienated. You had never seen the red string of fate and you were certain that you would walk this life in loneliness. The lack of a red string had you feeling as though you were walking an interminable night.
The screeching of a large blue bus pulling in front of the bus stop brought you out of your lamentation. You quickly walked into the bus, scanning your bus pass and quickly scouting for a seat. Relief washed over you when you saw an unoccupied window seat and you walked over to claim that seat as yours. It was a nuisance, but you got car sick easily and you needed to sit, or stand, by a window whenever you were in a moving vehicle. Once you sat down, you pulled out your phone and earbuds to listen to music. You set the music setting on shuffle and let your playlist randomly choose songs for you to listen to. After the music started to play, you decided to scroll through your social media accounts on your phone and see what you had missed while you were at work. Your body jolted forward as the bus made another stop. The jolt was unexpected, especially considering that the bus had come to a gentle stop. As you pushed yourself upright, you noticed a red string tied around the ring finger of your left hand.
It can’t be, you thought to yourself. This must be a joke.
With gentle care, you touched the string to make sure you weren’t hallucinating. The thread felt soft and light. The string was even more beautiful as it was illuminated by light from the Moon. With a gentle tug on the string, you looked to see where it would lead to. Your gaze followed the whereabouts of the string, finding that it led to the front of the bus and that the string continued out of the bus. The tension of the red thread felt tight. It was now or never.
Quickly, with a sense of unspeakable urgency, you pressed one of the many buttons found in the bus to signal to the bus driver that you needed to get off the bus. You stashed your phone and earbuds back into your purse and swiftly exited the bus once it came to a full stop. Your gaze focused solely on the red string tied to your finger and you followed its path without giving any care to your surroundings. You had spent a long time telling yourself that you had accepted the gods leaving with you alone, but that lie held no truth to it.
With every step that you took, you tugged the red string towards your body as if to tell your soulmate, “Please, find me.”
You were so caught up in the stressful excitement of the idea of meeting your soulmate that you had failed to notice that you were about to bump into someone.
Oomph.
Looking up from the red thread that was connected to the person that you had bumped into, you found yourself briefly looking at their back. They quickly turned around to apologize, but the apology was caught in their throat as you tugged at the red string on your finger with enough force to bring your soulmate closer to you. He placed his hands on your waist, as he had done countless times before, and stared at you in awe. His smile was bright and reminded you of home. How could you have not seen this before? Looking back at your time with him, the signs had been so obvious. The countless late nights, the way your hand always seemed to find his, the whispered I-love-you’s. It all made sense.
The quiet moon that had plagued your life had been out-shined by a bright and warm sun for longer than you had realized. With or without the red string of fate, there was no doubt in your mind that you loved him.
“You found me,” Hobi smiled at you.
I was tagged by @breadoffoxy. Thank you!!!
Rules: List 7 things that make you happy
1. My little brother. He’s two years younger than me and he means the world to me. Although he looks intimidating, I like to call him Squishy.
2. My cat. She’s been my companion for 16 years and I love her very much. She’s a big grump, but she loves to cuddle. Also, she puts up with a lot of what I do, especially my inability to stay still when I sleep at night.
3. Calling my best friend, H. We don’t even need to be talking, we could just be working on whatever we are doing over the phone and the time that we share together means a lot to me (my love language is quality time).
4. Eating good food. This one is kind of general because there are a lot of foods that I enjoy, but eating good food just makes me happy. There are some foods that when I eat them, they trigger memories from my youth and I like having those experiences.
5. Going to museums and aquariums. I really love learning and going to museums and aquariums is a lot of fun. By far the things that bring me the greatest joy when I got to these places are jellyfish exhibits and any exhibit that’s related to Astronomy.
6. Teaching. I love to teach, plain and simple. It’s been my dream to share what I love with other people and I am so thankful that I have been able to do that for the last six years. Not every day at work is perfect, but it makes me happy to work as a teacher and share my love and passion with others.
7. Music. The very first love of my life was music and it has played a significant part in my growth and development. Without music, I would have not created precious memories with my late grandma. Without music, especially k-pop, I would have never met my best friend, H. Music has done so much for me and I hold it near and dear to my heart. Music has brought me unspeakable and interminable happiness.
I’m tagging @inky-starlight and @rougebangtan. No pressure to do this!
@breadoffoxy, thank you!!!!! I’m glad that you enjoyed this piece. Sehun is perfect for these kinds of cute stories.
Cheeto (Sehun Drabble)
Pairing: Sehun x reader
Warnings: None. It’s fluffy.
Notes: This drabble was partially inspired by something that I saw two of my students do last week at school when they were hanging out in my classroom. I hope that all you enjoy it!
“Stop wiping your fingers on me,” you complained as Sehun once again wiped his cheeto crusted fingers onto your bare arm.
“Where else am I supposed to wipe?” Sehun asked before popping another cheeto into his mouth.
“On yourself?” You suggested as you tried to wipe your fingers on Sehun’s arm. Unfortunately he had anticipated your action and moved far enough away from you that you couldn’t reach him.
You threw your head back in annoyance and started to lick your fingers clean. “You suck.”
Sehun laughed and moved himself so that he was next to you again.
“Then why are you sharing your Cheetos with me?” Sehun jokingly asked. You shook your head at his question and shivered as a cold gust of air from the air conditioner blew at you.
Without a second thought, Sehun shrugs off his black windbreaker and lays it on top of your shoulders.
“Sehun you don’t have to-,” you started to say.
“You’re cold and you need it more than I do,” Sehun nonchalantly replied as his long fingers dug through the bag of Cheetos.
Although you wanted to feel bad about his gesture, you couldn’t help but smile as you ate another cheeto.
“Thank you, loser,” you said. Sehun laughed and once again wiped his cheeto covered fingers onto you.
“Anything for you.”
Hi everyone!
I wanted to give you all a quick update on what’s going on. Earlier in May I announced that I would be posting scenarios every Friday for the BTS Ghostie Net Bingo Bash. Unfortunately this week I was busy studying for the General GRE and distracted by Haikyuu! (no regrets on the Haikyuu).
Because of the GRE and Haikyuu, I will not be updating today. I’m sorry to those who were looking forward to an update. :(
With that being said I do want to tease what will be coming up. Next Friday I will be posting a new scenario for the Bingo Bash. I’m stuck between three different scenarios. The current options are: a. Namjoon x Reader crack scenario where both of them are babysitting for the first time. b. Yoongi x Reader angst scenario that explores a complicated friends with benefits relationship. c. Seokjin x Reader crack scenario. I’m not sure which one will be finished first, but it will be one of those three.
In addition I am working on writing a sequel to Field Trip, but I do not know when I will start or finish that scenario. I’ll give everyone a heads up when that is coming up.
Thank you all for your support, especially with Field Trip. If you haven’t read it yet, I would highly recommend checking it out. It is the most popular scenario out of all the ones that I’ve written for the Bingo Bash.
Also here is my recommendation for the weekend: Young K’s cover of Over the Rainbow.
#crystal talks#also i'm in serious trouble#i really like haikyuu#and i might start a sideblog#oofff#i'll also still be studying for the GRE until august but i've set up a schedule for myself so i should still have time to write#this week and last week i have been trash for day6
Thank you!!! I’m glad that you enjoyed “Field Trip.” 💜
Field Trip
Pairing: Dhampir!Jungkook x Moroi!Reader
Genre: Vampire Academy!AU, action, and fluff
Word Count: 4.4k
Prompt: vampire!au
Warnings: Jungkook says the word “ass,” and there is an action sequence. Brief allusion to blood, because it’s vampires.
Summary: Jungkook is a Dhampir training to become a Guardian. His whole life he had been taught that “they come first” and that he is meant to guard and protect. In the middle of the field exam, Jungkook tries to wrestle with unanswered questions while protecting you at all costs.
Author’s Note: First off as far as fanfiction goes, I just want to note that this is the longest thing that I have ever written. This vampire!au is based off of the Vampire Academy books and as such I don’t have any ownership over the mythology of this story. With that being said, don’t worry if you’ve never read the books before. I made sure to include enough background information so that you can fully enjoy reading this scenario without having prior knowledge. This scenario is also for the BGW Bingo Bash and falls under the “vampire!au” prompt. © Field Trip is copyright monggu-eomma. Do not re-post, modify, and/or translate this piece of writing without my permission.
They are the only thing that stands in the way of the Strigoi and their next meal.
Hi!! I just wanted to say I really really enjoyed your work “Field Trip”! And I hope you’d consider turning it into a series, even! I loved the Vampire Academy series and JK is my bias, so you’ve made something so wonderful in my eyes! Your writing was very smooth and I could see myself becoming very attached to your work!
Hi!!! Thank you so much for your support. I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed Field Trip. The Vampire Academy series is really good and with the addition of Jungkook into the mix, it’s even better!
I really enjoyed this concept a lot and I’m definitely going to be writing more of this AU. I already have idea for a follow-up scenario, so you can definitely look forward to that!
They are the only thing that stands in the way of the Strigoi and their next meal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They come first. The mantra was a whisper that entered Jungkook’s mind as he woke up from another nightmare. He didn’t need to be reminded of that saying. Ever since he started going to St. Vladimir's Academy to train to become a Guardian, that phrase became a mantra that was ingrained into the minds of every Dhampir. They come first.
Jungkook sat up from his bed, the covers pooling around his bare waist. He ran his fingers through his long, wavy hair as he thought about the field exam. It had been three weeks since the field test had first been administered. The field test was meant to test all last year novices to see if they were ready to be Guardians. The field exam consisted of all last year novices being assigned to a Moroi to guard for six weeks. During that six week period Jungkook had to follow and guard you, a Moroi that also went to St. Vladimir’s Academy, against professional Guardians that would attack at random to simulate the attack from Strigoi.
Two of the perks of this six-week exam was that Jungkook didn’t have to go to his regular day classes and that he didn’t have to wear the St. Vlad’s uniform. Instead, he would wear all black, like every Guardian, and he would follow the Moroi that he is assigned to, in that case being you, as you attend your night classes, seeing as sunlight causes discomfort to Moroi. This six week exam also gave Jungkook time to think about his future without having to worry about keeping up with his classes. He would be graduating in a few months and from there he had two options -- petition to be the Guardian of a Moroi, or let the Council choose who he should guard, and Jungkook wasn’t sure which option to choose.
After taking a longer than usual shower, Jungkook dressed in a slightly loose black shirt that he tucked into tight fitting black pants that accentuated his thick thighs and long legs. He finished the look with a black belt around his pants and tan combat boots. Today was a special day, because the Moroi History of Ancient Civilizations class was going on a field trip to the Natural History Museum. If he weren’t in the middle of the field test, Jungkook would be happy to have an excuse to leave St. Vlad’s for a day, but today the field test would be twice as hard. Ordinarily Jungkook only had to worry about fake “Strigoi attacks” from his instructors, but today he also had to worry about real Strigoi attacks. Strigoi attacks were not a common occurrence during the day since Strigoi burned when they came into contact with sunlight, but they could still hide in the shadows to wait for the opportune moment to strike.
Rolling his shoulders and craning his neck, Jungkook took a deep breath. “Everything is going to be fine,” he said to himself in hopes that he would be able to manifest what he desired. He patted the pockets of his pants to check and make sure that he had everything that he needed with him. “Nothing will go wrong. There will be actual Guardians there and Strigoi wouldn’t try to attack with all of us around during the day.”
With a final deep breath, Jungkook left his room to find you and join the others for the field trip. It wasn’t often that the Moroi went out during the day, considering the discomfort that they experienced when coming into contact with sunlight. Jungkook needed to make sure that you were ready for the field trip and remembered to stay close to him, not that you need reminding. Guarding you was easy since you didn’t sneak off and you kept out of trouble. In fact, Jungkook wouldn't have minded guarding you after he graduated, but that was a thought that he could entertain later. For now he needed to be focused and prepared. Everything is going to be fine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I hate field trips,” Jimin muttered as he watched Moroi students walking around the botanical exhibit of the Natural History Museum. Jungkook stood next to him and laughed at his remark. Jimin was a Dhampir, just like Jungkook. He was half human and half Moroi, whereas Jungkook was half Dhampir and half Moroi. Jimin looked like the typical Dhampir: average height, above average good looks, and muscular strength. Although Jungkook was also a Dhampir, from afar he could easily be mistaken for a Moroi with his height and good looks, but upon closer inspection it was clear that Jungkook was no Moroi. His muscular strength alone was indicative that he was no Moroi and his tan skin was evidence that unlike the Moroi, he could be out in the Sun without experiencing mild discomfort.
“I didn’t know it was possible for you to hate something,” Jungkook jokingly replied as he looked down at his friend. Jimin huffed and folded his arms over his chest. It took a lot of willpower for Jungkook to not coo at his friend.
“Why? Because I’m short and cute,” Jimin spitefully replied, using air quotes when he said cute.
“There’s nothing wrong with being short and cute,” Jungkook said. Jimin sent him a questioning look and before his friend could pounce on him, because Jungkook knew that Jimin would, he added, “Strigoi underestimate you when they see you. They think ‘this small thing isn’t a problem’ and then you kick their ass, so it works out in the end.”
Jimin shook his head left and right. “I just don’t like that we have to be on duty while they get to enjoy everything,” Jimin said, gesturing at a group of giggling Moroi that passed them. They waved their hands, flipping their hair as they passed by. Jungkook would have waved back, to be polite, but his homeroom teacher was looking at him and his gaze exuded an if-you-wave-back-or-flirt-with-them-you’ll-fail-for-today.
“Maybe you shouldn’t have insisted on guarding a royal,” Jungkook said as he directed his gaze to Taehyung, the Moroi that Jimin was hellbent on protecting. Even though there were plenty of professional Guardians around, both Jungkook and Jimin had to be extra vigilant since they were not within the safe confines of St. Vladimir’s Academy. Taehyung was a royal Moroi and as a result, he was a constant target, with or without the field test. Although Jungkook knew that there was no way that Jimin would have chosen anyone else to protect, even if he wasn’t officially Taehyung’s Guardian, yet, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“You know that’s impossible,” Jimin retorted. “He and I have been best friends since we were six.”
Jimin and Jungkook continue to focus their gaze on Taehyung, who was inspecting a biological timeline of the Earth’s history, and you by his side seeming to feign interest. Taehyung had the typical features of a Moroi, he was slim and tall with wavy light brown hair falling in waves over his piercing brown eyes. He wore a green silk dress shirt with a few buttons undone to show off his collarbone and loose fit black slacks paired with brown sandals. Like all Moroi he was beautiful without even trying. Although Jungkook couldn’t deny that Taehyung was good-looking, he was not the one that had captured his attention-- it was the Moroi standing next to Taehyung that had captured Jungkook’s heart. It was none other than you, Y/N. He had spoken to you for the first time three weeks ago, when he was assigned as your “Guardian” for the field test. You were also tall, although not as tall as Taehyung, and beautiful without even trying. Unlike Taehyung you were not a royal, although that didn’t matter to Jungkook. Even with the simple clothes that you wore, a plain short-sleeved, black dress that stopped a few inches above your knee with fake glasses -- you were without a doubt breathtaking, figuratively and literally-- not that Jungkook would ever admit that to himself or anyone else.
“Y/N looks cute today,” Jimin remarked. Jungkook slightly jumped away from his thoughts and awkwardly averted his gaze elsewhere. You always look cute.
“Um... Yeah... She looks good,” Jungkook said, hoping that Jimin wouldn’t read too much into this. Jungkook didn’t want people knowing that he found you mildly attractive. Jungkook and Jimin were close friends, but he knew that Jimin was terrible at keeping secrets and this mild attraction did not need to be out in the open for the whole world to know, especially you. It was widely known that Dhampirs and Moroi never had serious romantic relationships. At most Dhampirs and Moroi fooled around and when the time came for more serious relationships, they settled down with their own respective races. Jungkook didn’t want to be mocked or put down for having mild feelings that would lead to nothing.
Jimin nudged Jungkook with his elbow, a knowing smile on his face. Jungkook opened his mouth to rebuke Jimin, when a screech pulled them out of the beginning of playful banter. They both turned to the sound of the sudden screech, ready to jump in action. Taehyung was grinning as his fingers moved around to create a disarray of flowers in your hair. The sudden growth of flowers had taken you by surprise and caused you to get frustrated at Taehyung. You had spent a lot of that morning doing your hair, since it was not cooperating, and he was turning it into a bird’s nest. Jungkook’s spiked heart rate had calmed down once he saw that you weren’t in danger.
“You really take this seriously, don’t you?” Jimin asked with slight concern laced in his voice as he noticed Jungkook’s hand reaching for his silver stake. Jungkook hadn’t even realized that he had done that. Jungkook looked at him in surprise. Jimin immediately put his hands up. “It's not a bad thing. It’s good to take this test seriously and to be on guard, but you’ve changed since the test started. Before you were confident and couldn’t care less. Now... Now you’re on edge.”
“Well we’re Guardians in training. It’s our job to look after the Moroi and make sure that they don’t become the meal of the Strigoi,” Jungkook mechanically replied in an attempt to explain his recent change in behavior. “Even with their powers, they are still vulnerable and an easy target.”
Jimin nodded his head in agreement and put his hand on Jungkook’s shoulder. “You are the top of our class, Jungkook. You are more than capable of protecting Y/N and whoever you are assigned to after graduation.”
“I know that... I know that I’ll be a good Guardian--”
“Great,” Jimin coughed.
Jungkook playfully rolled his eyes. “Yes, a great Guardian. But this test is making everything seem that much more real -- protecting Moroi and killing Strigoi.”
“But there’s something more,” Jimin added. Jungkook nervously shifted on his feet. Jimin was right. There was something more, but Jungkook didn’t know if he was ready to say it. To admit it would expose him and it would make his fear that much more real.
“Look, I--”
“Jungkook!”
Jungkook and Jimin both slightly jumped at your sudden appearance. The flowers that once decorated your hair were gone, for the most part. Jungkook could still see a few loose pink flower petals in your hair.
“Hi Y/N,” Jimin said with a big smile. Jungkook was still staring at your hair. He wanted to look away and say something, but he couldn’t. Unfortunately, you had caught on to his staring and looked up at your hair in panic.
“Are there still flowers in my hair?” You asked as you started combing your fingers through your hair. “Taehyung made these pink flowers grow in my hair when I told him that he reminded me of seaweed with that green shirt that he’s wearing today.”
Without thinking Jungkook took a step towards you, so that you were a little less than a foot apart and started to extract the petals from your hair. You froze at how close he was to you and under his touch, not expecting him to help you remove the loose flower petals. During the time that he had been guarding you, Jungkook had been quiet and standoffish. He hardly spoke and when he did it was to discuss your next destination or talk about Guardian/Moroi business related things. On the one hand, you didn’t mind his professionalism, but on the other, you wished he would open up to you more.
You continued to comb through your hair as Jungkook finished removing the last of the flower petals. At the last petal, Jungkook’s fingers lightly brushed against your hand. A slight buzz ran through your hand at the simple and brief touch, and it left you wondering if touching him would always be like that, or if it was just a part of your imagination.
Jungkook cleared his throat and took a large step back away from you, the lack of his warmth leaving you a little cold.
“There, all gone,” Jungkook finally said. You nodded your head and fiddled around with your dress as your mind lingered on the feeling of his fingers lightly brushing against your hand.
“HEY Y/N!” You winced at Taehyung’s loud, booming voice. He slung his arm around your shoulder and much to your annoyance he leaned some of his weight onto your body. “Did you tell them?”
“Tell us what?” Jimin skeptically asked, his arms folded against his chest as he scrutinized Taehyung’s grin paired with the mischievous look in his eyes.
“Y/N and I are going to check out the night sky exhibit. It basically shows you what Earth’s night sky was like before industrialism and technology was a thing,” Taehyung explained.
“Sounds good,” Jimin replied. “We’ll follow you along.”
Jungkook squared up his shoulders and walked with Jimin as he trailed behind you and Taehyung. There was a light bounce to Jimin’s step and Jungkook suspected that Jimin was happy to finally be moving on to a new exhibit.
“You know, it’s moments like this where I’m thankful that neither of us was assigned to be Jin’s Guardian for this exam, Jimin said. Jungkook laughed and nodded his head.
“Me too. If one of us had to guard him during this field trip, it would be a disaster,” Jungkook replied. He felt bad for Hoseok, Jin’s “Guardian,” and he could only imagine the pain that Jin was putting him through right now. Jungkook had hoped and prayed to the highest of heavens that he would not be assigned to Jin for his exam. Although he was on good terms with him, Jin was notorious for walking to the beat of his own drum and Jungkook pitied the Dhampir that would officially guard him once he graduated from St. Vladimir's.
Jungkook saw you slightly shiver as you entered the night sky exhibit and he too could feel the shift in the air from damp and warm, to dry and cold. The change in air was very welcome to Jungkook, since he was feeling hot in the previous, overly crowded exhibit.
The night sky exhibit turned out to be a room that was shaped like a planetarium, although unlike a planetarium there were no chairs. There was quiet, ambient music playing in the background of the dark room. The only source of light came from small dots of light clustered in the ceiling. All in all, the night sky exhibit was simply beautiful. Jungkook took some time to admire the “stars” above him, but his thoughts were quickly brought back to the present as he heard Taehyung attempting to point out constellations, with you laughing while accusing him of making up constellations. Dark places were not ideal places to be spending time in, but due to Dhampirs having heightened senses, Jungkook and Jimin were more than capable of seeing around the dark room and keep an eye out on Taehyung and you despite the dim lighting.
Suddenly, a sense of dread filled Jungkook as the air in the room abruptly shifted and grew colder and drier. Goosebumps ran along the back of his neck with a shiver running through his whole body. I’ve felt this way before.
He quickly turned around, his silver stake in hand and with all of the force he could muster, he stabbed at whatever was behind him. In the back of his mind Jungkook hoped that it was just a Guardian staging a fake Strigoi attack for the exam, but the fear in Jimin’s eyes told Jungkook that there was no Guardian nearby.
Jungkook missed his jab and with a strong push from the Strigoi that he tried to stab, his body was flung against a wall. A sickening crack from the wall pulled a scream from you. The back of Jungkook’s head began to throb as his body slid against the wall to the ground. If he were human, he was certain he would be bleeding, but he couldn't linger on that thought for now. Jungkook could see Taehyung standing defensively in front of you, with Jimin in front of you and Taehyung. This was far from over. Jungkook would fight until the very end, no matter the price that he would have to pay. They come first.
Jungkook pulled his body up and focused his gaze on the Strigoi standing a few feet away from him. The undead vampire had his back to him and was focusing on Jimin. It probably thought that Jungkook was knocked out, but it would take more than that to stop Jungkook. He would do everything in his power to protect you. They come first.
Jimin didn’t dare look at Jungkook, so as to not give him away. He caught the glance that Jungkook shot him and briefly nodded at him. Alone they couldn’t take that Strigoi down, but together they had a small chance. Novices like Jungkook and Jimin stood no chance against a Strigoi, but they were certain that the screams would alert Guardians to their predicament and if they could hold off the Strigoi even for a moment, maybe the Moroi could make it out alive.
It was now or never. Jungkook lunged towards the Strigoi, his silver stake aimed at the back of the Strigoi’s heart. Everything moved in slow motion during his lunge. Jungkook noticed Taehyung’s outstretched hands prepared to use his element to his advantage, although it would do little good in this fight since Moroi were not trained in using their powers to fight. Next, Jungkook saw Jimin’s hard gaze along with his hard, defensive stance. At least if something bad happened to him, Jungkook knew that Jimin would protect you in his stead. Finally, Jungkook’s gaze landed on you. He could see the palm of your hands and he smiles to himself, seeing that you want to fight with your element. Had you always been this brave, or had he missed the small signs that gave way to your bravery as he followed you around these last few weeks? Jungkook looked into your eyes for a brief moment and instead of seeing the fear mixed with determination that he expected to see, he saw your eyes filled with terror. Something’s not right.
Jungkook heard the crunch of a stake going through flesh quickly followed by Taehyung and you shouting his name. He knew that the blow coming from the Strigoi would kill him, and there was nothing that he could do. Jungkook was fast, but he was not as fast as a Strigoi. He couldn't move fast enough to save himself -- to save you. He felt a warm rush of air followed by a cold hand backhanding him, knocking him hard to the ground.
The last thing that Jungkook could see as his body fell to the floor was Taehyung holding you in his arms, stopping you from going to him. This scene felt all too familiar to Jungkook and he wished that he could push his body up from the ground, but the blow from the Strigoi was devastating. It felt like he had nothing left in him to do anything anymore. He just hoped that he had done enough to give you time. They come first.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It took a few moments for Jungkook to open his eyes. For a brief moment he wondered if he strayed into the afterlife, but a quiet assessment of his surroundings pointed at something else. The room smelt sterile and slightly fresh from a soft breeze from an open window drifting from one place to the next. The material from the thin blanket that covered two-thirds of his body felt worn, used, and familiar. Although it had been almost a year since Jungkook had been to the infirmary of St. Vladimir’s Academy, nothing had changed. He had become all too familiar with the infirmary for three out of the four years that he had been attending St. Vlad’s due to the numerous injuries he had sustained during his training.
After allowing himself to regain some energy, Jungkook was finally able to open his eyes. The natural light from the infirmary wasn’t kind to eyes and it forced him to blink several times, to reduce the sudden harshness. Finally, Jungkook noticed that he was far from alone. He looked to his left and saw a person sitting on a chair with their head resting against his hip. He couldn’t help but smile when he saw a forgotten flower petal on the back of your head.
Jungkook shifted his body to get to a more comfortable position causing you to wake from your brief rest. After wiping the sleep away from your eyes, you found Jungkook staring at you. This wasn’t an uncommon situation for you to find yourself in with Jungkook. You had always wondered if he stared at you because he liked to study people or perhaps because he didn’t know what to say. There was also a possibility that it was a combination of both of those things. Typically you would speak up to break Jungkook out of his thoughts, but this time he was the first to speak up.
“.... you stayed?” Jungkook stated.
“Of course I did,” you said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “You’re my Guardian.”
Silence filled the infirmary at the realization at what had taken place in the night sky exhibit settled into Jungkook’s thoughts and your thoughts.
“You could have died,” you whispered, looking down at your hands. “If we hadn’t--”
“It’s okay, Y/N.” Jungkook placed his hand on your hand to give some comfort. “No matter what we do, there will always be threats. There is nothing that we can do about the fact that there are threats, but the best that we can do is be prepared.”
You nodded your head and despite the tears that clouded your sight, you smiled.
“We cannot change the circumstances that we face, but we can change how we proceed with them,” Jungkook continued to say. He removed his hand from your hand so that you could wipe away the stray tears that pooled in your eyes.
“You’re right. We can’t change the cards we have been dealt, we can only do our best with what we have.” Jungkook smiled and continued to ask you questions.
“How are Taehyung and Jimin?”
Your smile was more than enough to reassure Jungkook as you explained how his stake and Jimin’s stake both pierced the Strigoi’s heart from opposite sides. That meant that Jimin and Jungkook would both be getting a molnija mark, a mark that is tattooed on the back of the neck’s of Guardians to mark how many Strigoi they had killed. It was almost unheard of for Novices to have even one molnija mark, but it wasn’t totally impossible.
You explained how Guardians had come rushing into the planetarium just a few seconds after Jungkook was knocked out. It was relief to hear that nothing terrible or unexpected had happened after that. You went on to tell Jungkook that he had only been out for a few hours and that as a result of his accelerated healing he would be alright to continue his exam and acting as your “Guardian” in a day or two.
Long after you left to feed, Jungkook once again found himself thinking about his future and you. Before this exam, Jungkook wasn’t sure which direction to go in. There hadn’t been a Moroi that he wanted to petition to guard, but Jungkook didn’t want to put his name on a volunteer list and let someone else choose who he should guard. He didn’t want to risk being stuck with a stuck up Moroi and before the field test Jungkook felt as though he would be doomed to that fate. Then, Jungkook thought about you. He thought about how air always seems to have an extra swirl around you, which made sense considering that you were an Air user. You were not as impulsive or crazy as Jin, but he could start to see that you were not as quiet and docile as you made yourself out to be. He also thought about how patient you were with him despite his awkwardness and his occasional abruptness.
Even if he had only known you for a brief time, Jungkook couldn’t deny his attraction towards you. Was it just physical? Was there something more to it? It was too soon to tell, but Jungkook wanted to know more. He wanted his questions answered. Maybe after the exam was over he would continue to look after you, if you would let him. Maybe he wasn’t doomed.
Sleep washed over Jungkook and he let himself succumb to the land of far away dreams with a new mantra in mind.
You come first.
