In Indian mythology, mermaids are generally referred to as "matsya-kanyas" or "jalpari." They are believed to be mystical creatures with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish. Although not as popular as other mythological figures, such as gods and goddesses, there are a few references to mermaids in ancient Indian texts.
The Matsya Purana, one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, mentions the existence of matsya-kanyas. It states that they are the daughters of Varuna, the god of the ocean, and are often associated with water bodies like lakes and rivers.

I need more than anything right now what is, of course, most impossible; someone to love me, to be with me at night when I wake up shuddering in horror and fear
