'Cyborg' spinal implant could help paralysed walk again

Paralysed patients have been given new hope of recovery after rats with severe spinal injuries walked again through a ‘groundbreaking’ new cyborg-style implant. In technology which could have come straight out of a science fiction novel or Hollwood movie, French scientists have created a thin prosthetic ribbon, embedded with electrodes, which lies along the spinal cord and delivers electrical impulses and drugs. The prosthetic, described by British experts as ‘quite remarkable’, is soft enough to bend with tissue surrounding the backbone to avoid discomfort. Paralysed rats who were fitted with the implant were able to walk on their own again after just a few weeks of training. Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne are hoping to move to clinical trials in humans soon. They believe that a device could last 10 years in humans before needing to be replaced. The implant, called ‘e-Dura’, is so effective because it mimics the soft tissue around the spine – known as the dura mater – so that the body does not reject its presence. “Our e-Dura implant can remain for a long period of time on the spinal cord or cortex,” said Professor Stéphanie Lacour.

Her loss for words was obvious. The woman grasped desperately for words, tried to remember a time in which someone might have said to her "if your daughter tells you she's a boy..." She wanted to be a good mother, to understand... but she had never been a good mother, in her opinion, and she hated not knowing what to do in something that felt so serious. Her expression was unreadable, except for confusion. She wasn't angry, that was one thing she knew. She had known people throughout high school and  college that were the same, apparently, as her child. There might have been some sadness, feeling as though she was LOSING  a daughter but she was gaining another son. She felt a surge of guilt pass through her that Hiro hadn’t felt like he could tell her until then. None of her feelings mattered as soon as he started crying.  She was a parent, she was his MOTHER, and no matter what she thought or felt - this was the way he was. With such tears as those, it was her job to dry his eyes, and assure him that she loved him. Charlotte took the boy into her arms, pulling him to her chest. Still at a loss for words, the mother let the embrace speak for itself. She hugged him tightly, stroked his hair (hair she’d complained about him cutting initially).  “I love you,” she promised, throat tightening as she swallowed the lump that climbed quickly. “You couldn’t ever make me stop loving you.”

"I’ve never felt like one, Mom. As simple as that." Hiro took a deep breath before rising his gaze and placing it on his mother. There was a knot in his stomach as he tugged on his uniform’s skirt, high school’s making it mandatory to wear was taking its toll on him. It had to be said soon; otherwise he’d completely feel guilty, and what’s worse—- they would find out eventually. Shaky hands held the fabric apprehensively, brown eyes lowering their gape to the floor once more. Gulping, he let go of the skirt and ran a hand through his hair. It was too long for his taste, but it was to make him look rather boyish. Small victories, Hiro. Baby steps. He breathed in, and it rattled in his rib cage. His heart rammed against his chest and there was a tinnitus that couldn’t fade, it had been done. It had been done, at last. Now all he had to do was to wait to see how his mother would react. “T-Tadashi knows,” he added meekly, voice nothing but a murmur one would have to strain one’s ears to hear. “He knows and he was going to give me his old gakuran. But he said I should have told you first. And then dad.” Another pause. The silence is eerie.

 ”I… Should I apologize? I started using boku and atai instead of watashi a couple of months ago, as an experiment to see if it really was what I felt.” And it was, but for now, that best remain unsaid. ”…I started talking more directly, even since I was a kid. I never liked to wear frilly clothing, but I thought since you wanted to dress Hiroko-chan a certain way, she would have to endure. Because you loved me! And you knew what was best for her.” A weak smile follows, but there is so much to be said, still. 

"Mom. Mom. 母, I’m really sorry. But this—- this… I can’t live with anymore! Me lying to myself isn’t going to help me. I love you. But I’m not Hiroko. The suffix doesn’t make me who I am, doesn’t feel right. Please call me Hiro from now on, please allow me to cut my hair shorter, wear things that match how I feel. I’m really sorry that I couldn’t be the baby girl you wanted.” And with that said, what had been bottled up, spilled. He started to cry, out of shame.

                       she noticed very miserably that she was rambling to this cute                        smart guy who she was going to have to walk with for the next                          few minutes. she sucked her bottom lip under her teeth, heart                        stopping briefly as her cheeks panted pink with embarrassment.

                       thoroughly embarrassed now but with his confirmation that he                        would come, she thinned her lips and nodded. god, she couldn’t                        do anything right, she was making such a fool of herself.

christ, charlie isn’t always doing too well. somewhere in her early twenties, she developed depression. she is medicated but that doesn’t stop it from really dragging her down some days. when she left her children, it only got worse and sometimes she just feels like the absolute scum of the earth and like it’d be very nice to jump off the roof of the nearest building.

Charlotte had a lot of anger as a kid and never really knew what to do with it so a lot of that (and other emotions) get bottled up. She’s a very sensitive person and it can all build up very quickly. If she can, she’ll turn to drinking but if she’s around her children or it’d be inappropriate, she simply locks herself away until she’s let it all out.It’s easy to tell when she’s getting agitated because she’ll go through a pack of cigarettes hella fast.
