The Back-Up Plan
Nonsense review! (Spoilers)
Tumblr media
Tired of waiting for Mr. Right while her biological clock ticks away, Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) decides it's time to make an appointment at the sperm bank. On the same day as her procedure, she meets Stan (Alex O'Loughlin), a man with the potential to be her ideal mate.
Sounds like the perfect film for a Sunday night’s chilled out watch, right?
Well, it certainly was chilled, and I did enjoy it. But was it perfect? Gosh no.
To begin with the positives (as I am a nice person, I swear) Jennifer Lopez is stunningly good, and a natural on camera.
Though her characters in films I’ve seen tend to be the same, all are lovable and strong, Zoe being no exception. She doesn’t need love, she wants it, but is perfectly stable in the rest of her life. Jennifer makes the film what it is, and is the ever perfect rom-com lead.
Her co-star, however, I can’t say exactly the same for.
Here’s what Stan (O’Loughlin) is supposed to be: funny, sarcastic, charming, and surprisingly sweet. And he is all of these, apart from the sweet part. And I’m not too sure about charming either.
His character annoyed me throughout the beginning of the film only because I couldn’t figure out if he was interested in Zoe, or he just wanted to get into her pants and then run. Though Alex himself is certainly proficient in acting, his character was simply undesirable.
As a comedy, this film soared. As a romance film? Not so much.
Now let’s get onto the real stars of the film.
Melissa McCarthy. Gold. Every scene was gold. She is just undeniably hilarious and lifted the film so far. Comedy is what she does best, and man is she good at it.
Michaela Watkins was also the perfect mash of best friend and comedic relief, a gem of this film. More honourable mentions include the little dog Nuts (gosh that lil boy was cute) and Anthony Anderson. Both very complimentary to this movie.
The plot was alright, with the nice little twist at the end, but a bit random and unrealistic. Don’t even get me started on the half-hearted writing of Stan’s character.
So the film was good, but in my opinion it could have been better. The actors can only carry the writing so far. Is that mean? I feel like that’s mean. I’m going to put it in anyway.

Rating: 6/10
Available on: Netflix
Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Alex O'Loughlin, Eric Christian Olsen, Michaela Watkins, Danneel Harris, Anthony Anderson, Melissa McCarthy, Noureen DeWulf, Linda Lavin.
Verdict: Don’t waste your time/You’ll enjoy it/Must-Watch!
Reviewer: Fifi
Special Mention: R.I.P to Tom Bosley, as The Back-Up Plan was his last film before he passed away.

Hey Movie fans, sorry the blog was dead for a while. I decided to change it up, and take control of it myself. I’m not reliable so maybe this won’t last, but I love movies, and I love talking, so I’m gonna talk about movies in a new thing called Nonsense reviews! They will pop up from time to time, and are not to be taken seriously as I’m not a professional, it’s just me talking about how I feel. Hope you enjoy the nonsense!

He’s Just Not That Into You
Nonsense review! (Minor spoilers)
Tumblr media
Gotta love an all-star cast, right?! Favourites included Aniston, Ben Affleck,  Ginnifer Goodwin, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Connelly.
Anything with Jennifer Aniston in it is going to make me smile, but for some reason I didn’t go into watching this move with the highest hopes.
The meagre Netflix description didn’t do it any favours, and I honestly expected just another I-can’t-even-finish-this romcom film.
HOWEVER, immediately the documentary-style scenes and different relationships that tie in together drew me in. It gave it an honest, meaningful, realistic feel, like this movie was doing more than trying to entertain. It was directly trying to appeal to people, without being too serious.
It was different, and interesting, and almost Love Actually style plot-wise. If you took away the Christmas part and Rowan Atkinson.
The main characters were lovable (apart from the guy who cheats on his wife, and the girl he does it with) and layered, and I actually wanted things to end happily. Like, I kinda cared about the characters.
All in all, the film was heartwarming, and I’ll admit, I didn’t think I was going to cry, but I did just a little during a certain proposal. Just a little.
I mean come on, Aniston cries, I cry.
There’s not much to say in terms of diversity, the all-star cast failed to bring in a little bit of melanin, which would have just made the film for me, as I do love representation, but being an older film, there was no real point in getting my hopes up, was there?
Honestly, if any of y’all can send in a rom-com with a black female in the main cast, I would love you forever.
I’m a sucker for cheesy stuff, and this film didn’t disappoint, but that’s not all it was. Would prove a good viewing for those looking for a bit of reality, and heartbreak, not all hearts and roses.
But, it’s not groundbreaking, so maybe reserve it for Valentine’s Day.
The message was directed at women, to not take crap from guys, and sit around waiting for their happy ending, but to know their worth. See, not groundbreaking, but a much needed reminder.
There was also some stuff for the guys too, which I liked. It didn’t paint them as idiots (well, not all of them), just kind of immature, and unsure what real love actually was.
I hope the guys figure it out soon, because I’m ready for my soulmate to come knocking.

No Shit Sherlock
Can we take a moment to mourn for the fact that, all through out Infinity War we never got the iconic Sherlock line, between the two Sherlock’s? RDJ and Cumberbatch, for those of you who do not know, both played as Sherlock in prior films/productions....
Now I do have to give a shout out to how the script writers, producers, etc did add in the line ‘Doctor, Do you concur?’ (1:04:20)
It is another iconic line one that Sherlock would often say to his partner in solving crime, Dr Watson. A nice tip of the hat to their time acting as Sherlock Holmes.
There was some hype of their characters, Dr.Strange and Tony Stark/Iron Man. Being so similar (as the goatee wearing egotistical men) and them having to coexist in the spot light. There were many iconic and very amusing altercations between the two.
Yet not as one cliche and iconic as there would have been with a ‘No Shit Sherlock’ line.
Now finally I have to say that this is purely my opinion, but damn I hope some of you agree with me!

One for All, well Half
There are very few things that can cause me to shake my fist in the air, but one of them is the fact that...
Two people, two lives are valued over half of the universe. Vision and Gamora.
Scarlett Witch has many chances to ‘kill’ vision, when there is a chance that Vision could have survived by Shuri, as hoped by many. For he is Vision, not just the mind stone. The main reason he died was because Thanos yanked the stone out of his skull. Don’t get me wrong I love Wanda she is a freaking badass of a heroine, but it’s aggravating!
Then there is freaking Peter Quill! I understand that he couldn’t necessarily kill Gamora with Thanos in possession of the reality stone. When they were in Nowhere.
Yet in the fight scene on Thano’s home planet, Titan. Quill makes the choice to bitch slap Thanos, causing them to lose their chance to get the gauntlet. Dont get me started on the whole gauntlet thing
My main point is that in the previous movies they have always accepted self sacrifice for the greater good.
It’s like one of the biggest characteristics of a hero; for those who can not defend themselves!!
Gaaaahhhh, it raises my blood pressure just talking about this.
(Again this is my opinion you do not have to agree with me, if you want to talk please DM me at @bananataffyy. Do not attack this wonderful blog.)
This has been another!

Grandmaster, at Loki’s funeral: Can I have a moment alone with him?
Attending crowd, nodding and leaving: Of course.
Grandmaster, leaning over Loki’s coffin: Now, listen, I know you’re not dead.
Loki: Yeah, no shit.
