In Persecution or Provocation?—a piece from her reflective series Unveiling the Quiet—Dawn Fifer examines a viral Subway incident where an employee refused service to men wearing anti-LGBTQ+ shirts. Far-right media framed it as “Christian persecution,” but Fifer reveals the group included known provocateurs like David Grisham and Rich Penkoski.
As a queer woman, she uses this moment to explore a deeper theme at the heart of Unveiling the Quiet: the quiet, painful realization that white Christian nationalists will say and do harmful things, then frame themselves as the victims when held accountable—gaslighting the world with a near narcissistic flair.
Being called out for bigotry isn’t persecution. It’s accountability.

I loved you in the quiet hours,
when no one else was listening.
I held onto the echoes of your voice,
the spaces you left empty,
the weight of words unsaid.
I would have stayed—
through the storms you never warned me of,
through the shadows you pretended weren’t there.
I would have built you a home from my own bones,
if only you had asked.
But you never did.
You never reached for me the way I reached for you.
You never let me be the one who mattered most.
Instead, you hid me,
tucked me away like a secret
you would never claim.
And still, I long for you.
Still, I wonder if you ever truly saw me,
if you ever whispered my name
when no one else could hear.
I tell myself it doesn’t matter now—
that love is more than a ghost of what could have been,
that I deserve something steady, something true.
But on the quietest nights,
when memory aches like an old wound,
I still find myself searching
for the warmth you never gave.

In my latest article, I explore the inconsistency within Protestant Christianity that proclaims salvation by faith alone, yet imposes additional requirements on LGBTQ+ individuals. I argue that this contradiction undermines the core message of grace and inclusivity central to the faith. By highlighting this disparity, I aim to encourage a more genuine application of the principle of salvation through faith for all believers, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

In my article, Learning to Show Up as Myself, I share my journey of embracing authenticity after years of hiding behind people-pleasing tendencies. Growing up, I constantly felt pressure to conform, meet others’ expectations, and suppress my true self out of fear of rejection. This left me feeling invisible and disconnected from who I truly was. Writing this piece gave me the opportunity to put my story into words—a story about self-acceptance, setting boundaries, and choosing to show up as my authentic self. I hope it resonates with anyone navigating a similar path.
