Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said that in addition to delta infections, a new "west-east tidal wave" of omicron infection is spreading in the region. According to Kluge, more than 7 million infections were reported across the region in the first week of 2022, more than doubling in two weeks. The WHO rates the overall risk associated with Omicron as "very high" and states in a recently published white paper that it has a significant growth advantage over Delta, leading to rapid dissemination in the community.

Doctors transplanted a pig's heart into a patient in a last-ditch effort to save his life, a first in medical science. Doctors from the University of Maryland medical school said Monday the patient was fine three days after surgery. The patient is David, 57 years old. Bennett, a Maryland craftsman, too sick to have a human heart. Bennett said before the operation, "I want to live. I know it's a shot in the dark, but it's my last option." The operation on Friday showed for the first time that a genetically modified animal heart can function in the human body without immediate rejection.

Hospitals in the US are feeling the wrath of the Omicron variant and finding themselves in a chaos, different from previous waves of COVID19. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 85,000 Americans in hospital with COVID19, just short of the delta peak of about 94,000 in early September. The all-time high during the pandemic was around 125,000 in January last year. As of Monday, just over 10,000 people were hospitalized with COVID19 in New York State, including 5,500 in New York City, most in the city or state since the disastrous Spring of 2020.
