So most of you know I used to be a fiend in the gym. I was consistently working out 5 days a week. Playing volleyball and squash, lifting, hard core keto... the whole thing. Over the past year I've kind of scaled back in a big way and lost myself a little but in the process. It's been a tough year but I'm finally starting to feel a little more like myself and finding me again. This class was a start to being a better me. “Jessamyn, why do you get weird when you talk about smoking weed?”

Because I live in a state where it is illegal to possess cannabis and a bitch is scared. Scared shitless. The Fear keeps me silent. The Fear has created a Stigma. And even more than fear of police action, The Stigma is what keeps me quiet. Even now, there are those who will see this post and immediately dismiss me. They will say I’m a bad influence, a drug addict. And the reason they have free license to make these comments is because of my silence. And it’s not just my individual silence- it’s our collective silence.

Actually, the mainstream conversation about cannabis doesn’t even bother me as much as the stigma within communities of cannabis consumers. Our collective shame and resulting silence is our approval stamp on a justice system which currently incarcerates thousands of people via lies and propaganda.

I am embarrassed by my silence. I am embarrassed that I’m complicit in this system. I am embarrassed that I allow this kind of fear to control my life. I am embarrassed that I have allowed deeply racialized stigmas to guide my judgments for this long. At this point, it is my civic duty and responsibility to do something.

I know there are people who live in states like California or Colorado and are perhaps confused by my outburst bc they are surrounded by dispensaries and a rising tide of mainstream cannabis culture. But neoliberal cannabis culture does little to nothing for the hordes of black and brown people who are regularly persecuted for engaging in the same free enterprise that has created a modern gold rush for an overwhelmingly white, cis male dominated industry.

Plus, the stigma still exists in states where legalization has occurred. And it’s up to all of us to do something about it.
