There was a crazy storm in Calgary last night and the lightning was illuminating the sky with multicoloured tendrils. It’s got me thinking about a pregnancy related condition colloquially referred to as lightning crutch that results from a perfect storm of elements in the body (The hormone Relaxin working and connected tissues in the pelvis, Progesterone relaxing the smooth-muscle of the pelvic bowl, The increasing weight of a groavid uterus, reduction in activity and all mobility). common symptoms present as a dull ache at the front of the pelvis on the pubic bone, isolated pain at the hips or Lobac radiating down the leg or at the back, a sharp flash of pain down the inside of the leg (which gives it its nickname). At its worst, the pregnant person can end up on crutches or in a wheelchair; which has obvious Impax for labour and birth. medical term: symphysis pubis dysfunction (or pubis symphysis dysfunction depending on where you’re from) is there a cure? Yes, giving birth! The symptoms of this condition will likely decrease significantly once your baby is earth side, but they don’t disappear completely and can remain in some extent for the duration of a breastfeeding journey and all until the soft tissues have repaired and restrengthened enough to you adequately stabilise the pelvis what can you do to help? - Android activities that require unilateral movements or load-bearing activity – Pelvic strengthening activities - See a chiropractor and or physiotherapist – come and do prenatal and postpartum yoga with me! I suffered with this in my second and third pregnancies but to a lesser degree my third as I made a concerted effort to strengthen and stabilise my pelvis as much as I could . People often say when they find yoga they find themselves. That it is a transformative and enlightening practice that reaches out far beyond the borders of the yoga mat. I have learnt that yoga is much more than just a physical practice; it is a deeply meditative, introspective practice that can open the heart and the mind to the boundless realms of possibility that unify the individual self with the universal being. I have seen how Yoga can become a way of life in the same way faith as; but without any loss of agency or responsibility for our thoughts, feelings, and actions or consequences. Empowerment for me, Yoga is playing a big part in helping me achieve my parenting philosophy & how I want to parent: with an open heart, and an open mind; a physical body open to the welcoming love of a child with the strength and stamina to whether theInherent ups and downs that come with parenthood. With strength and stability to navigateThe metamorphosis from single entity to an entity that is inextricably and and is endlessly bound in mind body and spirit to another being all beings tonight‘s yoga takeaway was more lighthearted: got a toddler with a stuffy nose he was not sleeping well? I met a sage lady in the supermarket today. She was admiring my children “Oh there’s another little one in there” peering into the stroller “you must be very busy” she said, giving me that knowing and understanding ‘eye hug’, “Yes” I relied “I am” Which is true. The mental fatigue of being constantly responsible for 3 dependant human brings is exhausting. I grieve my ore--children life of relaxing quietly in the garden/persuing my hobbies/travelling... These last few days have seemed particularly hard. My 2 eldest who normally get along like a house on fire have been bickering non-stop; attention-seeking behaviour from the eldest; goading from the middle one; demands by the youngest one. It’s been A LOT “I know how you feel dear. I had 6 - 5 boys - a farm & a house in the city. I know about being busy!” “Tell me your secrets. How do you stay sane through it all. Tell me how you did it” I say to her, sort of earnestly pleading; sort of in awe. “There’s no secret. You just keep going. I’m 88 now; I survived!” Thank you sage lady. P.a. 🔭 FORESIGHT 🔭 Whilst conducting a fear release and surrenders workshop for labour and birth I was recently asked by a participant: “why are doulas so expensive?“ This question stumped me a bit, as in my opinion doulas are not expensive… At least, not when you factor in all the aspects that go into the price point. Yes, there is an upfront investment, but that investment lasts much much longer than the birthing and immediate postpartum period.Plus, if you hire a certified doula it may well be covered by your medical insurance benefits it is therefore FREE. We are also a very compassionate a lot by trade, so if finances are an issue then we are definitely open to a discussion on payment plans and barrier free birth support packages. Now, I’m not trying to pretend that Dulas have the magical power of foresight, but experience and knowledge goes along way into helping clients make informed decisions and advocating where requested.
