LIVE REVIEW ::: Marsicans at 360 Club, Leeds
When thinking of great Northern bands, most people will be able to name the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and The Pigeon Detectives, but just by realising the importance of these bands on popular music undeniably makes it increasingly difficult for a new emerging band find their own sound. Marsicans however seem to have made a stand – they know their sound and are good at delivering it. The Leeds based band have been influenced by the likes of The Beach Boys with riff ideas similar to Vampire Weekend, but they have fused their sound into what can be described as surf-pop with an indie upbeat feel.
The four-piece band fit perfectly together with what comes across as a genuine on-stage connection. It simply feels like you are watching four good friends just having fun creating music they love. Heading in the same direction as upcoming bands like Seafret and Marmozets, who have both gained themselves a lot of BBC radio attention in the past few months, Marsicans too are developing themselves into a breakthrough act full of their own charm.
On Friday 20th February, Marsicans, with support from TRASH, Kamara, and masses, who used the gig to launch their new EP ‘I Couldn’t Be Happier’, headlined at 360 Club at in Leeds. The whole gig was filmed live by the venue as part of their weekly Friday event promoting local talent, giving artists and bands a platform to grow on.
Their confidence was evident right from the start of their set, going straight into fun track ‘Terrapin’. Marsicans do not hang around and wait for the set to grow, they just get right to it and immediately settle into the stage and crowd. Full of energy and spark, they move through their set with ease, bringing back older material with ‘Imbroglio’ before easing into their newer tracks ‘Something English’ and ‘Chivalry’, the later of the two receiving a huge response from the audience. Chanting back their charming lyrics, the home crowd no doubt enhanced their tight performance creating a brilliant vibrant atmosphere to be a part of.
Midway through their set, Marsicans sneaked in a cover of the well known Hall and Oates track ‘You Make My Dreams Come True’ in a down tempo rendition, full of gorgeous harmonies before leading into an older of their own songs ‘Can I Stay Here Forever’. Before leaving the stage, Marsicans played their upcoming single ‘Gone In A Second’ before finishing with ‘EightForty’, with the bass player running into the audience leaving the crowd chanting “one more song”.
Even their stage set up boasts their quirky nature, with fairy lights around the drum kit and brightly coloured shirts, they really look the part. With crisp endings of every song, Marsicans display a great showmanship and know how to please a crowd. Whilst enjoying themselves immensely, the band make sure those watching have a good time too.
Marsicans’ next single ‘Gone In A Second’ will be out on 18th April.

LIVE REVIEW ::: Orla Gartland at Manchester Deaf Institute, 17th February
It’s a rarity to find an upcoming artist just starting to burst through into the main scene who already has a strong back catalog of music. Thanks to the Internet phenomenon that is YouTube, more and more artists and creatives are reaching out into the general public, boosting their popularity, and Orla Gartland is one such artist. Starting up her YouTube channel under the name “MusicMaaad” in 2009, the Irish born singer-songwriter has grown not only her online views, but also her live audience and is currently embarking on her second headline tour around the UK.
With support from Greta Issac and Martin Luke Brown, the ‘Lonely People’ tour has taken Orla around Ireland, Scotland and England with her biggest headline date in London so far on Friday 20th February at the O2 Academy Islington. After moving onto Bristol, Birmingham and Nottingham, Orla will be heading over to the states to perform a set of dates in North America in March.
Performing at the Deaf Institute in Manchester on Tuesday 17th February, Orla Gartland has expanded from a solo singer and her guitar, to an indie folk-pop infused band with the help of Greta Issac on backing vocals, Jacob Attwooll on keys and guitar and Mike Park drums. Fronting this new ensemble, Orla has enhanced her sound massively from previous gigs but kept her same down to earth and tight sound. A well-known feature of Orla’s live performances have not gone a miss with her usual crazy facial expressions and witty natural on-stage banter, and it is refreshing to see someone progressing in the music industry yet still maintaining her roots and personality.
Speaking of Roots, Orla started the night walking onto the Spice Girls ‘Wannabe’ hinting back to her previous ‘Roots’ EP tour cover, which was also popular on her YouTube, before beginning her set with a short version of one of her old favourites ‘The Ground’ played on a mini synth keyboard.
The night progressed with Orla performing a mixture of material often cracking jokes about herself, mocking her ginger hair and creating a sense of ease and warmth. Full of charm and whit, the set included tracks from both her EP releases ‘Roots’ and ‘Lonely People’ as well as other tracks fans would have heard through her YouTube and other smaller releases.
Songs such as ‘Clueless’, in which she slapped herself with lyric “You wouldn’t know a good thing, if it slapped you in the face”, and her first iTunes single ‘Devil On My Shoulder’ accompanied by the story of being released under the name “Orla Gartl”, highlighted her raw and genuine personality.
Her latest EP ‘Lonely People’ features tracks ‘Get Back’ ‘Souvenir’ and ‘Whispers’ bringing out her new explosive sound, drawing influence from The 1975 and Haim using synth backing tracks incorporated in with live instruments and vocals, showing her versatility.
Orla Gartland performs with so much heart enabling her to take complete control of the crowd even in the quieter moments. ‘Empty Man’ and ‘Sixteen’ were joined by a 250 people-strong choir in the form of an adoring audience, showing the true power of her honest music. Even new unreleased song ‘Flatline’ was received well and a mash-up cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ and Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’ brought the audience into her hands.
With other YouTube breakthroughs like author John Green and beauty guru Zoe Sugg doing so well in their respective fields, there really is nothing stopping Orla Gartland from progressing into the general music scene and bursting into the ears of the public and not just those who seek online entertainment.
Orla Gartland’s latest EP ‘Lonely People’ can be found on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

ALBUM REVIEW ::: Kodaline release second album ‘Coming Up For Air’
Irish band Kodaline have finally released their gorgeous new follow-up album ‘Coming Up For Air’, featuring single ‘Honest’ as well as growing tracks ‘Autopilot’, ‘Ready’ and ‘The One’.
The band posted a live video for second track ‘The One’ stating that “it’s written about a couple very close to our hearts who have an amazing relationship” written for a close friend’s wedding, adding a more personal story behind the album. Tracks ‘Everything Works Out In The End’, ‘War’ and smooth and floaty ‘Unclear’ are reminiscent of debut album’s ‘All I Want’, but their sound has matured into something new and stronger.
‘Human Again’, ‘Lost’ and ‘Play the Game’ change the pace and scene of the album, adding a twist into the collection. Possibly drawing influence from Muse, Coldplay and even a bit of The Killers, this album fuses Kodaline’s pop-ballad consistency with rockier and more punchy sounds, definitely taking a leap from their debut album.
The album’s release followed a set of “Live at Ocean Way” sessions posted onto Kodaline’s VEVO channel, teasing tracks ‘Unclear’, ‘Honest’ and ‘The One’ giving us a taste of the album.
Steve Garrigan’s distinctive vocals soar over the album yet again, giving Kodaline their distinguishing raw sound. With more heartfelt lyrics and beautiful harmonies combined with massive choruses and brutally honest lyrics any crowd will want to chant back, Kodaline have created a truly wholesome and endearing album. It perfectly captures their original essence but builds on their debut foundations to create an extension on the band’s already prolific sound.

Introducing Yorkshire band Calgaris with their striking debut track 'APLT'
There has been a lot of young talent to emerge from the North in recent years including the likes of The 1975 and Alt-J, and Calgaris are another band on the verge of creating a stir. The brilliant young 4-piece hailing from Yorkshire, namely the areas of Huddersfield and Bradford, have been writing and performing together since their college years under the name ‘One Stop Railway’ but rebranded at the start of this year with a new and more established sound.
With the new name Calgaris and some exciting new material, they have been gigging away from their Huddersfield roots at Corporation in Sheffield and even found themselves a spot supporting recent McBusted support act, the American pop-rock band Hollywood Ending, at Coventry’s popular Kasbah venue. Calgaris recently released a video along with their debut track ‘APLT’ in which they tell the story of a house party gone wrong. The track video is filmed in lead singer Matt McGoldrick’s basement and features what could be a promising new vibe.
Another track of theirs ‘Holy Books’ sets aside a completely different tone and shows the band’s more vulnerable side with a homemade video and stripped back feel. With a follow-up single ‘Sugar’ out in the coming months, it could prove to be an exciting time for this young Northern band and they are definitely ones to watch out for in the coming year.

Flyte - 'We Are The Rain'
Flyte, a four piece alternative band from London, started their musical journey like most bands, writing and recording with the typical home studio setup, uploading videos taken of tracks in their bedroom and nourishing their home grown talent.
Recently supporting growing Irish indie folk band Hudson Taylor at the popular Camden Electric Ballroom, their vintage vibe and solid sound eased the crowd into a good night of music. It was clear through their strong confident set that they have established their own sound, and know exactly how to bring their story across. Flyte work incredibly well as a unit, using their strong harmonies reminiscent of The Beatles to their advantage. They project a brilliant sense of ease and traditional style of songwriting.
Their latest single ‘We Are The Rain’ is now available on iTunes, with older tracks ‘Where Nobody Knows Your Name’ and ‘Words Come Easily’, available to listen to on the band’s Soundcloud, affirming their sound.
Flyte are set to play numerous festivals this summer including Hyde Park for the British Summer Time Festival, Truck festival in July and Y Not Festival in August. They are definitely ones to look out for this summer to bring a fresh easy-going soundtrack to the sun.

Annaca – ‘Give A Little Love’
Kent based singer-songwriter Annaca has been stirring up interest this past year with her soulful and playful vibe. With jazz influences and a spirited feel, her performances combine a mixture of setups, either accompanying herself on piano, or performing alongside her loyal band with Leo Humphries, Samuel Harrison and Ben Bashi. These competent young musicians from the ever-growing Brighton music scene create her four-piece strong band.
Annaca’s previous EP ‘Haunted’ gave off a confident start to what is sure to be a long career. The new material produces a more electronic edge to her previous sound but is still very unique, full of charm and oozing charisma. Emerging Icons has described her as “a whirlwind of bright colours and rich, velvety sound”, a perfect description of her strong character and captivating music.
Her talents have certainly not gone unnoticed and recently won Annaca a spot to open up Jools Holland’s live show at the O2 Apollo in Manchester, which he quotes to have chosen due to her “superb talent and excellent musicality”. With another four-track EP prepared to be released this summer, Annaca shows promise for what could be the brink of an exciting future.
Watch the brand new video for the charming track ‘Give A Little Love’ above.

I've not written a live review in a while (even though i've been to a multitude of gigs recently, oops) and was looking at summer jobs, one which required you to write a review on the most recent gig you've been to as part of the application. Naturally, I collected my mind and thought about which recent gig I could review and came to the conclusion that I would have a lot to share about McBusted's current tour, having seen it in London and Sheffield. So, review written and submitted for said summer job, i've decided to post it to here as the deadline for applicants has passed (so no one could submit my review as their own) and so here it is from the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena date of the McBusted tour. Enjoy!
*spoilers for anyone who is going to see the tour, sorry!*
McBusted at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena – 4.5.14
It’s not every Sunday night that you find yourself whisked back in time in a sold out arena full of fans reliving their childhood. The night was a chance to grab hold and relive the music that once meant so much to a generation. With the formation of two of the biggest young pop bands of their time, McFly and Busted gave their fans a show to remember.
As soon as the lights went down, suspense filled the arena as screens projected a video featuring Busted’s Matt Willis and James Bourne in a predicament, proclaiming that the only way to save the day would be to travel “back to the future”. With that one phrase, the arena erupted. The video showed Matt and James getting into a DeLorean time machine and zooming off screen.
Moments later, a replica of the car transcends from above to the theme from ‘Back To The Future’ revealing Matt and James inside. But where are McFly I hear you ask? Suddenly McFly members Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd jump out from under the stage and lead straight into an old time Busted favourite ‘Air Hostess’, simultaneously kicking their legs, causing a massive stir.
Following right into ‘You Said No’ getting the crowd really involved, they continued with Busted hit tracks ‘Britney’ and ‘Who’s David’, before the ensemble proceeded to play ‘Five Colours In Her Hair’ commanding the audience to sing the opening lines solo. Crowd participation was a must for this gig and the atmosphere was simply electric. With the mass 13,000+ strong choir singing back their lyrics, it came as no surprise McBusted found themselves lost for words, cutting the music letting the audience take over. The night moved on with a beautiful rendition of heartfelt ‘Sleeping With The Light On’ during which the arena filled with lights from audience members.
Another video indent followed, with the band playing characters of an alien sighting before returning to the arena in a bizarre way. Lowering on a UFO in the middle of the arena, they played the crowd favourite ‘Star Girl’ and ‘Nerdy, reminiscing over an earlier Buster tour which saw a memorable date at the Motorpoint Arena, in which Tom confessed he came up with using the name McFly at that date, in which he played drums for Busted. From the UFO, the band commanded the audience to take part in the latest ‘selfie’ craze before continuing on with ‘Room On The Third Floor’.
Running back through the arena onto the main stage, the set went on with ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’ and an impressive cover of The Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ which featured impressive stylistic choreography from Danny, Matt and James, setting the crowd off again. They proceeded with ‘Shine A Light’ with a flaming McBusted sign. Full of stage antics and in house banter, McBusted continued through with ‘What I Go To School For’ ‘Crashed The Wedding’, an encore of ‘All About You’ before finally ending the night with ‘Year 3000’. They ended the night with a final run around the stage before handing in their instruments to stage crew waiting on hand and individually jumping down a trap door hidden behind the drum kit ending the night with a massive uproar, leaving the audience begging for more.
With the energy of their younger days multiplied by about a million, the night was definitely one to remember and McBusted go on to continue on their enormous 34 date, sold out tour.

Our band is Calgaris, and we have recently gone through quite a lot. We changed out name last October and since then have been writing new material and early this year recorded two brand new tracks, that hopefully will knock your socks off! We have just been shooting a music video for one of them, and this is a picture from that shoot.  Twas shot by a good friend of ours Mr. Nathan Buckley, who is currently editing it and making sure we look pretty.  I can’t tell you when the release date will be…mainly cos I don’t know yet, but keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page to be up to date with all our goings on. Catfish and the Bottlemen - Kathleen
The four-piece indie rock band Catfish and the Bottlemen are set to make their impressive mark on this year’s music scene. With a loud and explosive rock sound that’s full of heavy guitars and driving energy, the Llandudno band are blasting their way through countless radio stations, with features on BBC Radio 1 from the likes of Huw Stephens, Fearne Cotton and even a spot as Zane Lowe’s “Hottest Record”, as well as making the XFM daytime playlist.
Their catchy and inviting sound makes their live performances unmissable. Having managed to strike up over 100 gigs in less than a year, including Radio 1’s Future Festival alongside Circa Waves and Royal Blood, Catfish and the Bottlemen are taking a leap and heading out on their own headline UK tour this May, including a sold out date at Camden’s infamous ‘Dingwalls’ venue on 20th May.
The latest release from the band, with a vinyl release on 14th April, came with an unusual lyric video featuring a compilation of short clips of actor Ewan McGregor and can be seen at the link below. They seem to have a habit of releasing their music alongside rather strange and unusual videos completely irrelevant to their music and the lyric video to ‘Kathleen’ certainly shows this.
The track is only the third single release from the band, with hints of a debut album to possibly be released later this year. With a busy year ahead full of festival dates following on from their headline tour, the future could prove very exciting for the Welsh band and I for one will be following to see what they do next.

INTERVIEW WITH AMBER RUN
Amber Run are an ever-rising five piece band from Nottingham, whom are currently on their debut UK headline tour, supporting the growing Irish sensation Kodaline. Their latest single ‘Spark‘ has gain great support from taste-makes such as Zane Lowe in recent weeks. I caught up with the guys last week and was interested to gain an insight into the journey Amber Run.
Growing up in Nottingham, what was the music scene like and how do you reckon your music fits in?
We didn’t actually grow up in Nottingham – we came together at UNI there. There’s a lot of good music up there, the obvious artists like Jake Bugg and Saint Raymond emerging from it – I don’t think our music is too far away from theirs. Of course, being a band means we can go as big sonically as we like.
You’re fairly new to the music scene; do you ever wonder that something you’ve worked on in the studio for months could get a bad reception?
I don’t think so – not because we think everyone’s going to love it, but we wouldn’t put out music thinking about whether people are going to hate it. I suppose we just put it out and if people like it then great, if not then that’s fine. There’s always going to be people who don’t like our music. It’s important that we like it first and foremost though. We’ve recorded a LOT of songs that people will probably never hear, because in the end even we didn’t like them. Nothing would go out that we were unsure about.
Are there any bands or artists out there that you’d consider to be influenced by?
Loads of them! There’s the obvious choices like Elbow and Coldplay, bands who are known for classic songwriting, but we listen to a lot of varied artists as we all have different tastes. We mix in quite a bit of influences from post rock bands like Sigur Ros and This Will Destroy You, but our personal tastes are really all over the place. Anything from psychedelia to drum and bass.
There are a lot of bands trying to make their mark at the moment, what would you say is your advantage or the thing that will make you stand out from the rest?
I guess it can be difficult to stand out from everyone else. All you can hope is that people respond to the music. We’ve always wanted to put on an incredible live show. Of course there’s only so much you can do in small venues with minimal production, but we want to put across the passion and the emotion in the music whether it’s live or on record. At the end of the day we are five best mates making music together, hopefully people will notice that.
You’re supporting Kodaline on tour later this month, what’s the connection there? How did that come about?
Kodaline are on the same label as us, so there’s that connection. We’re big fans of their music so it was amazing to be asked on tour with them. They’re one band in particular people have compared us to so it’s a great fit.
If you could collaborate with any band or artist, alive or dead, who would it be?
We’d all have different views on this I think. We’d love to make really ambient music, work with bands like Explosions in the Sky or This Will Destroy You. I think film soundtracks as well – I’d love to make completely atmospheric music personally. Felix would probably want to play drums for Pearl Jam or something…
You’ve released two singles now, and another due out 20th April, are there any plans for a debut album?
Yeah we recorded the album throughout January and February with Mike Crossey and a guy called Sam Winfield, who’s in many ways the sixth member of our band. He produced everything we’ve done up until the album and has a big creative input on the music. The album should be out later in the year.
What’s the next big step for you guys? Any big plans for the future?
The next step for us is to just play as many shows as possible through summer and tour the album to death. We want to really hone our live performance through the rest of the year and into the next and get the music out to anyone who’ll listen. Beyond that, the sky’s the limit for us.
