Hey there! This blog will no longer be active- I've moved over to this one @niki-writes-stuff aka the blog posted above. It's basically the same blog, different location. I originally wanted my writerbler to be a primary blog but it's easier to have it as a secondary blog on my main account. So here we are :). Tumblr won't let me delete this one for some reason.
So give me a follow over there if you'd like!

Camp Nano Progress
Okay. First day of campnano. Trying not to freak out. 😂😂
Since I changed my wip to something I'm less familiar with, I also carried my goal down to 20,000. Still challenging, but not quite as daunting as 30,000 😅.
My daily goal is 700. I've done that and more in a day before but never 31 of them consecutively sooo I'm a bit worried, but mostly exited!
Current count stands at 0/20,000. Ima get some rest and then attack it a little later.

Dialogue all the way!
What kind of author are you; the “I write a lot of conversation” kind of author or the “I can’t help to put too much description”.

Starting with dialogue has became somewhat of my Signature thing now and the only way I'll stop is if you pry it out of my cold dead hands
hey. hey. I have a confession
I fuckin LOVE dialogue as a first line. I adore it. whenever I flip open a book and the first line is dialogue I’m like hell YES this is my SHIT
there’s lists of, uh, TOP TEN WAYS YOU SHOULD NEVER START YOUR NOVEL EVER and “opening with dialogue” is always on them
the gist being that it’s bad bc the reader doesn’t care about this character yet so why are they gonna care about this dialogue, right, they don’t have any context for it, you should start with something that gets the reader invested and emotionally pulled in, so on, so forth
(and I’m not here to argue or call bullshit on these lists or anything…… 99% of the time, the reasons listed of why you should Maybe Not Do The Thing are perfectly valid concerns and dangers that should be taken into consideration)
(this post is more a ramble about personal preference with a nice moral at the end)
(and definitely not a TOP TEN REASONS “TOP TEN WAYS YOU SHOULD NEVER START YOUR NOVEL EVER” LISTS ARE LIES AND SLANDER post god could you imagine)
but yeah, for me, dialogue opening lines pull me right the fuck in emotionally. for real. nine times out of ten they’ll yank me in and have me engaged instantaneously. always have, probably always will
(like come on. have y’all never just started eavesdropping right in the middle of some total strangers’ conversation on the bus. especially if it’s somethin weird. it’s so good)
but ANYWAY, the moral is uhhhh
whatever Mortal Writing Sin you wanna commit, there’s probably at least one weirdo out there possibly named logan who digs it
do whatever the fuck you want, honestly
you can write an opening scene that does everything every advice page tells you to do with an opening scene and it can still be shit
you can write an opening scene doing everything every advice page tells you NEVER to do with your opening scene and it can still be fabulous and engaging
if you can pull it off, literally who cares

Camp Nano 2019 (July)
I’m finally taking part!!!!
I’m keeping track of my progress on here, so i figured now’s as good a time as any to post a summary of my wip, The Other Life.
Penelope Carmichael has lived in the shadow of her best friend Kris Johnson for as long as she can remember. Kris is popular, beautiful, and perfect, and while Penn tries to be happy for Kris’ success’, she finds it difficult to shake her jealousy. On the eve of their 17th birthday, Penn and Kris get into a car accident, and Penn wakes up several weeks later to find herself in Kris’ body, and her own nowhere to be found.
As months go by and Penn remains trapped, with the real Kris seemingly gone forever, she slowly allows herself to adapt the life of the girl she always envied. However, Penn quickly begins to realize that Kris’ reality may have been far off from the one everyone believed her to have, and that underneath her facade of perfection lies the haunting and tragic truth of a girl Penn realizes she never really knew.
Because I’m insane, I did change my wip at the last minute (like 2 days ago) so this one is a tad underdeveloped. I have a basic outline of about ¾ of it and a good idea of the characters. I’ve found myself really drawn to the premise of ‘Person who has/gains everything realizes life isn’t always a bed of roses’ and a lot of my wip’s lately have found themselves centered around that, in varying different ways.
TOL is a new area for me though, as it’s one of only two things I’ve ever written in which anything out of reality happen. At the moment I intend to focus it more on how Penn adapts to her life as Kris while uncovering the truth about her best friend, rather than the ‘fantasy’ element of them switching bodies. Maybe as I go along new ideas may spring up about that part of it but at the moment, and for my first nano project, I’d like to stick to what I know.
Penn is a bit of an enigma to me, still, which is interesting and frustrating as she is the main character. But words cant explain how intrigued I am by her story and what I know of her thus far, so I’m sooo excited to go on this trip with her and going in blind I think is only adding to that.

Writing about a child rapist did not make Vladimir Nabokov a child rapist.
Writing about an authoritarian theocracy did not make Margaret Atwood an authoritarian theocrat.
Writing about adultery did not make Leo Tolstoy an adulterer.
Writing about a ghost did not make Toni Morrison a ghost.
Writing about a murderer did not make Fyodor Dostoevsky a murderer.
Writing about a teenage addict did not make Isabel Allende a teenage addict.
Writing about dragons and ice zombies did not make George R.R. Martin either of those things.
Writing about rich heiresses, socially awkward bachelors, and cougar widows did not make Jane Austen any of those things.
Writing about people who can control earthquakes did not make N.K. Jemisin able to control earthquakes.
Writing about your favorite characters and/or ships in situations that you choose does not make you a bad person.
It’s a shame that in this day and age these things need to be said.

I'm keeping track of my progress on here, so i figured now's as good a time as any to post a summary of my wip, The Other Life.
