He’d spent three days curled up in it as it crumpled under the weight of everything Riko piled on top of it, face pressed to the sagging wall where Riko had left him the smallest of holes for air. The fear that Riko would never let him out was only slightly overshadowed by the fear of what Riko would do if he cried out for help, so he’d fought his escalating panic with everything he’d had.

No, after reading The Sunshine Court I’m certain that Kevin has never drank alcohol before coming to the foxes.

Ravens are strickt. They have nutrition diets, they don’t buy or choose their own clothes. They don’t party or go out. They don’t buy snacks in the airport. When Jean was beaten beyond and through he had just an ibuprofen. They have a medical stuff that fixes them after “scrimmages”.

So I think the first time Kevin ever got drunk was with Monsters. Maybe in the Eden’s when the music was loud and the cracker dust rubbed just deep enough to scratch away some thoughts. Maybe in the foxhole tower, behind closed and protected doors.

Whenever it was - Kevin understood why people were enjoying it so much, even if it’s unhealthy. He can compromise unhealthy if he can’t hear his thoughts and memories for a while. If he doesn’t have to think about the boy who took away the only thing that connected him to his mother; or about the other boy that was left behind in the suffering so he could escape.

So yeah, definitely after the Nest.

I’ve been rereading All For The Game to prepare for The Sunshine Court and I saw someone (can’t remember who) on Twitter discussing if Kevin’s alcoholism started at Evermore or at Palmetto. I finished my reread of The Raven King this morning and Neil said this after returning from Evermore, so I think we may have gotten our answer.

Thank god Nora posted The Sunshine Court on the weekends and I had a sleepless night before Sunday and not in the middle of the week.

Anyway, I’m going for my second read now🫡
