past life episode one is home of a very rare flavor of gem: the wet cat gem. normally this gem is impossible to see because she’s the one herding other wet cats. however, it appears that with sufficient sickness, I want to go “oh no do you. know where you are. oh no—”

ppl are always writing characters doing dumb shit like roasting a fresh-caught rabbit over an open flame instead of making a stew with that thing. great now you’re letting all the fat drip down into the fire as it cooks, wasting calories and flavor as well as causing the flame to flare up = inconsistent heat source,… when you could be maximizing the nutritional value of small game by making a soup or stew. Come on

DSMP X TAZ BALANCE
Tumblr media
When registering to Balance I remembered this drawing. I swear I posted this years ago, but couldn’t find it! So I’ll just do it again lol. Which is a shame cause I wrote so much about symbolism and what not…
Tommy as Taako: it’s about change! Tommy’s hands always reaching out taking stuff, breaking and mending and transforming. Transmutation feels deeply tied into Tommy’s character to me. And Tommy and Tubbo can’t be anything other than the twins, joined at the hip, and the way Tommy is utterly a husk without his Tubbo. Also both Tommy and Taako getting framed for horrible events that they aren’t entirely culpable, always running from it. Plus turning the umbrastaff and wizard hat into discs was too good to pass up!
Tubbo as Lup: Instead of fire, it’s more along the lines of explosions. Tubbo doesn’t have any clothing that don’t have burn holes and scorch marks (which does mean Tommy doesn’t either!). He was clumsy in the early days too, ending up with facial scaring from it. Raw power dancing at his fingertips, Tubbo doubling down on it as the cycles go on, desperately trying to build up power until he cracks it and becomes the first wizard to figure out nuclear fission. It’s the power of nukes that Tubbo uses to fuel his ascent to Lichdom and, of course, the bonds with his friends.
ough it’s later than I thought I’ll finish in the morning…
Anyway….. the liches! In this au Techno (Magnus) also becomes a Lich because hello??? Blood for the Blood God!!

Chapters-Writing Advice
I, evidently, have a problem figuring out how long a chapter should be. But, some rules of thumb I've developed for deciding which scene is last:
Does the last scene pay off what was set up in the first one? This gives a sense of completeness or cohesiveness to the chapter. This could be a chekov's gun firing, building off a theme that the first scene introduced or reminded, echoing early lines, resolving a problem introduced, the waning of the fallout from a character learning something in the first scene, or any number of things.
Time skips. Pretty straight forward, though typically on a longer scale than the time skips between and within scenes.
The extent of an emotional swing. Chapter breaks can sometimes give a feeling of a reset, since readers tend to be more likely step away and come back then. Interruptions weaken the potency of a building emotions. So, in the rollercoaster of a plot, an easy divide is after the story reaches an emotional peak/valley so that it's a continuous direction. This could be building up to a crescendo of tension, excitement, drama before more (minor) falling action in the next chapter, or ending at a calm before the storm. Though this is a deep simplification of how to shape emotional changes through the levels of story, scene, and paragraph.
Dramatic final line. Ohhh I love these so much. Gives a single event, dialogue, theme, exposition, whatever, extra emphasis. Great way to get a reader hooked, and give them a pause of anticipation, theory crafting, breath before continuing. Whether the reader sits back and really ponders the significance, or is immediately flipping to the next page to find out, a chapter ending can cause a particular exchange/reveal/decision/etc to stick out.
POV changes. Depends if this is a technique you're using, but generally clear divides in whose head the reader is in avoids any confusion, and chapters provide an extremely clear demarcation. This can also be used in the sense of what character/s are getting the dominant focus in the chapter, particularly if you have a large cast and rotate the spotlight.
Obviously, a lot of other factors will come into how long each chapter is. Scene length, reader time investment, editor advice, etc, but these generally guide my process. And sometimes it really might just be an arbitrary decision based on page numbers because some times a reader doesn't want a 60 page chapter cough cough.

My fic based on the Eleonora's falcon's whumpy hunting strategies is here! Summary:
For generations, a certain population of Eleonora’s Falcons have been observed learning to capture smaller birds by shredding their wings and trapping them in rocky crevices to have fresh food available later. In the Avian tongue, Eleonora translates to Elytrian. In the Avian brain, Elytrian translates to nightmare. But while Avian Techno is dreading the moment he’s turned into lunch, Elytrian Philza hasn’t slept in three days trying to take care of his newborn. When the line between chick and chick food starts to blur, how will predator and prey handle it?
Design details below cut :) featuring lots of speculative biology and culture based on real birds.
General
Both species don't have feathers around their mouth for hygiene.
Evolutionary, they follow the
Their teeth are convergent evolution. They are not the same as mammal teeth.
We are ignoring the fact their flat faces are not the most aerodynamic.
Head wings are to increase mobility and the face aerodynamic problem. Somewhat similar to dragonflies where they have a lot more aerial precision, but doesn't allow them to hover.
Languages are grouped by Order. Some portions are instinctual, others are learned.
Avians
Avians are passarines. There are multiple species of Avian. Technoblade is based on colorful songbirds, but doesn't have a specific source.
Omnivores. Diet includes fruit, nuts, fish, insects, grains. Become more herbivores during migration because they can store long term.
Technoblade's feathers mimic the spears of a crown, with his back similar to cTechno's blue cape. His shoulders are very fluffy to mimic the fur of cTechno's hood, and because it's winter.
Evolved for long distance migration across the ocean. Their arms were primarily an adaptation for holding supplies during migration, but have found new purposes with the invention of society.
Because of their long head wings, Avians can't wear typical shirts. They also don't have a concept of chest modesty. The halter top is a way to carry more supplies while flying, and has a net interior. The sleeves are to keep their arms warm during migration. (and to mimic ctechno skin).
The long head wings make them incredibly agile in flight. Combined with their incredible endurance, if they can survive the initial attack they tend to do well.
Walk more upright than Elytrians since they don't have to counterbalance the same magnitude of wing.
Like to wear shiny stuff like gold.
Baggy drop pants to trap heat and because they don't tend to walk too much.
Can sleep with only one half of their brain while migrating so they're able to keep going.
Good mimicking abilities.
Elytrians
Elytrians are falconiformes.
Elytrians don't typically do the de-winging thing, it is a learned behavior within Philza's area (much like Eleonora's falcon). They find arms very useful for tearing while clutching the prey in their feet talons.
Nearly exclusively carnivorous.
Elytrians live further south of Techno's species, and migrate about a month after they've passed through.
Their general diet does not typically consist of Avians but instead other birds, or terrestrial prey like deer or smaller. They only eat Avians during migration/hatching season, targeting exhausted migrators.
The main hunting strategy is divebombing at incredible speeds. If they miss, they might pursue it little bit, but have a lower success rate.
As such, they have small head wings to avoid getting in the way of aerodynamics.
Small head wings also mean they can have more of a shirt! Tend to have sleeves, and don't cover up the chest because there's lots of fluffy feathers there, particularly in females. They don't have boobs. They're birds. That's. That's not how that works.
Females are larger.
Giant talons for ripping and shredding.
I uh did read articles about the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction and stuff about gigantification and what not, but I think I'll stop myself before pontificating about the oxygen ratio in the atmosphere and potential gravity differences.......

Alright I would like to emphasize this isn't an alt history deal, like this world straight up has actual demons and fae etc that would've greatly impacted timelines. I just don't feel like worldbuilding since the dawn of time and am loosely basing things off real history.
That saiiiiiiiid hear me out. Maybe the followers of Prime were like 'what no we don't care about tattoos as long as you kill monsters real good'. Which raises an even bigger question. Because so far, Prime is aesthetically similar to Christianity, primarily due to the dsmp guys borrowing heavily from cultures with heavy Christian shadows. Obviously Prime has very different morality, rules, and worshipers, but aesthetically it could have a similar place in history if I'm trying to avoid massive ripple effects.
Which offers two options: Prime 100% replaces Christianity's role in shaping European history OR Prime came in later holding an iced latte and conquered fantasy Europe another time after the Romans and the Saxons and the Angles and -- okay a lot of people invaded, etc. And both have so many world building implications that I'm getting dizzy, and elect to return to rebuilding walls and floors instead. Because I can't imagine any of this organically mattering in Lambs even remotely. Bruh I just wanted to write about an abusive family what IS this
y'aaaaaaaaaaaalll will you be mad at me if Jaiden has tattoos in The Lambs Wolves Wear? Cause I'm mentally thinking of it as around 1700-1750 due to a few markers* and my skimming research says that tattoos weren't really reintroduced/re-emerging in Britian/Europe until late 1800-1900s via sailors. Maybe I could just say that tattoos were never a lost art there? Except the invasion of the Romans had a slightly big impact on how all of culture technology and history in Britian went. And more importantly, got rid of tattoos. So like, saying the Romans just didn't invade seems like it would cause more problems than the victory of now getting Jaiden tattoos.
Like obviously, it's a fantasy world with crazy magical components, and I don't believe the way our history shook out is the only sequence of events ever. But. At least the vibes would feel jarringly anachronistic (because they are).
*Time indicators: Columbian exchange (blackberries), cast iron stove, swords still being prevalent among non-armies and poor.
Also I'm not a history major please don't kill me

oh yeah and I just realized guns are actually common enough in the 1700s that they probably should be at least mentioned in Lambs. Plot twist Philza just shoots the "children".
