Nobody was doing it like Mary Magdalene. Tits out. Standing on a mountain. Holding a skull. She’s like the lesbian catholic hamlet. Aesthetically an absolute win for the gays.

had one of those "being raised christian didn't fuck me up at all" where I had difficulty forcing myself to reblog a very cute image because it had cleavage in it. my brain was convinced that as soon as anyone saw it, they'd tell jesus or something and I'd get shot, because people might think I have sexual desires.
and it's like, even though I'm asexual and I'm legitimately not reblogging it because AWOOGAH BOOBS, it's like I'm automatically thinking "I can't let anyone see this and think I might be into it. something terrible will happen if that's the case!"
what? what will happen? even if it was true, and I just thought it was sexy, what would happen? fucking nothing! I'm on tumblr! plenty of people on here are openly lusting after sexy women, because they're attracted to women! a very normal thing to be, you know?
and all this is completely separate from the different hangups I have from that upbringing around homosexuality and transness. This is a separate "sex, and any form of sexual attraction, is bad" pile of bullshit.
It probably took me twice as long to figure out I'm asexual because it was conflated with this weird comp-ace nonsense I had grown up with.
Anyway, despite just being a random furry image, being able to reblog it openly and not on some kind of secret porn account (which I don't have, btw: I used to, but I haven't used it in over a decade!) was important to me with regards to getting over some ingrained hangups I've got from all this jesus-filled upbringing. So if you see me reblogging a bunch of apparently horny art, don't worry, it's just religious therapy :)

"Why bother teaching them anything when you could just... wipe them out?"
Tumblr media
This quote is ssoooo telling of Belos because he doesn’t actually want people to get better. He doesn’t want things to improve or heal, he just wants to destroy and tear down.
If Belos was even a little sincere, his mission would’ve been converting the Boiling Isles to Christianity, to actually save people's souls as he claims, but no! He doesn’t believe in restorative justice; He’s Christian so he believes in retributive justice! In punishment, and it makes perfect sense to him because this is Hell!
And Hell is the ultimate condemnation, it’s the point of no return. It’s when even God says you’re not capable of being redeemed, and takes away any chance you have at choosing to be better. It’s why Fallen Angels are a thing, but Risen Demons aren’t; You can always still mess up and never truly make up for it, it’s inevitable.
So why bother teaching them anything, as Belos says, when it's already been decided as a lost cause by God? Maybe he did understand the assignment, in that ironic way that actually exposes its flaws to a reasonable outsider, even as the supporter sees them as slandered virtues.
Tumblr media
And as the Collector responds to Belos' suggestion, NO, he wants to be their friends, he doesn't want to condemn people to a state they can’t come back from (Hence their misunderstanding and apprehension towards death)! They prioritize happiness, an idealistic world where everybody gets along, so for all their naivete and forcing of others, there's a sincerity Luz is able to speak to in order to convince. As she reassures the Collector, his mistake wasn't wanting happiness and chances for people; Just because compassion can sometimes backfire doesn't mean it's wrong.
This exchange really does deliver the difference between Belos and the protagonists, who believe in getting better and giving people the opportunity to do so, even if they recognize they can’t make them change either, and also have to defend themselves at the same time. Belos doesn’t want others to get better, nor himself; He refuses each chance to improve, and he’ll deprive the world of chances as well.

proverbs 16:18
(id under cut)
[Id: a digital painting of kristoph gavin on a dark green-ish background with square brush strokes of dull reds and oranges. kristoph is standing confidently, legs slightly spread, playing the violin in his usual clothes. he is illuminated by bright yellow light from above, and has a bright yellow halo in the shape of a deformed attorney badge. his glasses are lit up by the yellow light as well. his bangs cast shadow upon one side of his face, while the other is exposed to the light, resulting in his eyebrow and eyelashes being a light yellow. the hand that holds the violin has a scar on it. the painting is done with a square brush, with some details on the suit being rough, sketch-like. End of Id]

i’m helping out my partner by running video for her ch*rch. most of it is sitting around and waiting, so i’m falling back to my go-to activity when left unattended around a bible: speedreading mark (heretical opinion it’s the only gospel worth reading) (can i still be a heretic if i’m an atheist)
anyways all this to say: the online bible their streaming service uses puts the Word Of Jesus in bright red. which is cool and all but the only thing i can see is dave strider son of god

If I were to describe the Life series to someone with no knowledge of anything MCYT related I would tell them, imagine Dante's purgatory but it's the Hunger games but sometimes it becomes Love island.

i've seen people get confused at the fact that as aspec visibility increases, conservatives have started calling asexuality perverted, because asexuality is hard to present as hypersexual. First of all this is conflating sexual attraction and sexual behavior, ace people aren't all virgin sex repulsed celibates or live like monks. But i get that given how little conservatives know about ace people it is fair to assume they'd make that assumption. More importantly, this is missing the aspect of the christian conception of sexuality as a temptation that must be, first of all never spoken about, recognizing your own lack of sexual attractiong is knowing too much sexual education in their eyes, second, overcome to prove your love for god, third, is not up to you to define but up to god. If you feel no attraction, there's no virtue in not "committing the sin of carnal desire", and ace people who have sex are seen as doing so outside of strict bodily neccessity and thereful sinful as well. Plus of course the regular belief that every human must procreate and it's god's design that they have kids to further the species etc etc

When discussing the ways in which Luz and Belos both parallel Christ in the finale, I find it interesting how they do so in different ways...
Tumblr media
Belos draws upon the crucifixion of Christ; One of its most well-known and emphasized symbols. The constant reminder that he died, that he suffered in agony. You can see the translation into the self-flagellation, the noble suffering aspects of Christianity and its sects...
And it coincides just nicely with Belos’ cruelty, the suppression of his coven, his insistence on conformity, and his retributive take on justice. Instead of focusing on compassion and healing, he decides punishment is more important (just as the punishment of Christ is emphasized), hence why he suggests to the Collector in the finale that it’s more practical to just wipe people out, rather than teach them anything.
Tumblr media
Luz, by contrast... She draws upon the much less discussed aspect of Christ, the more important part arguably; The resurrection. In a sermon I attended for the sake of a family member, the pastor introduced this intriguing point, that people always speak of Jesus as if he DIED for humanity’s sins... But in doing so, this emphasis on the death, and not the resurrection afterwards, unintentionally undermines the point of his story. It suggests it ended on that mundane, negative note, and so one shouldn’t gloss over the healing aspect of Christ’s narrative.
And I find that intriguing, since Luz is on the side of restorative justice, not just in terms of how she should’ve been treated; But also as someone who has extended a compassionate hand to many who have done wrong or been horrible, but have also genuinely suffered, and enabled them to become better and happier. Even if some don’t reciprocate, Luz tries anyway... And that’s the other, kinder side to Christianity; The redemption. The kindness. The ability to recover from one’s darkest, lowest points. The guiding light that emphasizes the recovery, not the pain and suffering.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So ultimately, given TOH’s discussion of Retributive VS Restorative justice... As much as TOH deconstructs Christianity, it seems potentially interested in REconstructing it as well, in engaging with its more compassionate side that many, including its own self-professed worshippers, have neglected. And that fits nicely with Luz’s ideology winning out in the end, with her being more of a true Christ allegory than Belos, without even trying; Luz is humble and is doing good for its own sake, Belos is committing a false good in order to service his pride and delusions of being a savior. A true believer vs an impersonator, Christ VS Anti-Christ.
