He allowed silence to permeate the space between them once more, the thin line of his mouth composed. Only the light, crystalline sound of the melody dared to break the peace, each note a wavering cry of mourning. Kovu's fingertips drummed against the hard wood of the floor, as though he could spell out the answers for the kid. Because shit, the kid needed some help... and he was exactly the wrong person for the job.
"Well shit kid... why'd you go doin' that?" he mused, lifting one hand to drag through his  tangled locks. A shaky breath rattled in his throat as he sighed, olive eyes fluttering shut to block out the dim light. Everything felt too strained; the light pressed against him almost tangibly, and Kovu wished he could shove it back. "I mean, it's one thing to lose a gal... but to send her away and then cry about it? Shit kid, you've got a bit of a problem."
Now he could feel the music, feel it slipping and sliding against his skin. "Sounds like it's your own damn fault too."
He’d never really liked town, not really. It was too busy, too congested with eager shoppers fighting to get the best deal, or attempting to rundown pedestrians. Kovu quite honestly couldn’t remember the last time he’d been to the small town center, at least not before...

Even Sunshine Fades (Koala)
It was official: hospitals sucked ass. So. Much. Ass. Kovu murmured a few choice words beneath his breath, ignoring the glares of the starched and pressed nurses that fluttered about him like so many nervous hens. It was his first day up in weeks, and he was going to enjoy it, nurses and doctors be damned. Sure, his legs felt like jelly... but he wasn't telling them that. It felt so damn good to have his ass covered by real pants. That's right blondie, no more picture perfect views. Tough life, move along. Of course, he'd refused shoes, donning a light cotton v neck to hide the bandages that wrapped about his battered torso. Dark violets bloomed across his skin, and Kovu grimaced at his bruised flesh. It was still sensitive to the touch, much of it covered by only a fine, baby soft layer of skin. Skin grafts took forever to heal nowadays, eh? The tile of the hospital floor was cool beneath the bare soles of his feet, sending goose bumps racing up the tanned, toned skin of his calves; he relished the feeling. It felt so good to move, even if it was just a shaky walk. The fluorescent lighting was glaringly bright, only further deepening the headache that drummed between his temples. His hand reached out to grasp the stark white wall, running over the smooth paint. It was smudged with gray in place, and Kovu couldn’t help but feel he was but one of many to make this perilous journey down this hallowed hall. At least people had stopped staring at him, eh? The hospital was a winding maze of rooms and corridors, each one a carbon copy of the last; still, Kovu did not tire. It was refreshing, in a way, to mindlessly wander… instead of being trapped in bed with his thoughts, that is. When you’re stuck in bed for almost a month, you tend to get a bit tired of movies. Even if they are whimsical. A spot of color caught Kovu’s eye, and he moved curiously down the hall, footsteps light as fallen snow. It was the only bit of brightness he'd seen in this dreary, white washed place, and like a moth, he was drawn to it. Who knew, maybe it would—
“N-Nala?”
The word was snatched from between his lips, rising unbidden as he blinked back at the golden girl. He hadn’t seen her in weeks, hadn’t even known she was inhere to begin with. The staff had a knack for keeping people isolated, that was for certain. Why was she here? Was she sick? She didn’t look sick, merely confused.  Ah hell, did it even matter? She was here, and that was certainly a fact he could appreciate.
Kovu loped to her side, hands settling on either shoulder as he took her in, grim visage cracking as a grim spread across his thin lips. Sparks danced in her olive green gaze as he perused her features, unabashedly searching for scars or explanations. “What’re you even doing here?” he mused, brows furrowing. A slight chuckle escaped his lips, and all at once he drew her into an embrace. “Ah hell, who’m  I kidding? It’s nice to see you sunshine girl. Did ya miss me?”

Her smile was warm, almost heart breaking, and Kovu cringed. In that single moment he could see her bittersweet victor, and it jabbed at his heart. Cripes. It pained him to know that he'd been the one doing this to her, that he'd been the one to cause her so much pain. Well, he'd never do it again... at least not intentionally. He'd try to be faithful, to show her how much he cared each and every--
...Shit. He didn't like that smile. He didn't like that smile one bit.
He'd seem that look before, when she knew he was exactly where she wanted him to be. He was a fly caught up in the sticky, sensual embrace of her web, the warmth of her skin grazing his own. He couldn't help but melt into her, even as apprehension curled its clawed hand about his heart. He'd just have to be on his guard, and not give in to her--
“Actually… It didn’t. Would you mind explaining exactly what you meant?”
Who was he kidding? He had lost before this game had even begun.
Kovu couldn't help the small sound of pleasure that escaped his lips as she kissed him, soft, heated flesh melding seamlessly with his own. She was everywhere, pressed against his body, fingers wound up in his hair, lips never leaving his own. His hands skittered from one surface to the next, one moment on her collar bones, the next winding their way slowly up her thighs, dancing finger tips teasing. She was just so warm, so solid, so immediate. She was his world, his everything.
He almost whined as she pulled away... almost. He shivered as the cool wind washed over his heated flesh, longing for her touch; it aggravated him, how she was so close, yet so far. He attempted to pull her back to him in vain, instead having to settle for her breathy words in his ear.
“It’s just one answer. One simple answer that’s all I’m looking for. What am I too you?”
In that single moment of his hesitation, she had him. Kovu groaned as she topped him, relinquishing control grudgingly as her lips worked their way down his throat. Her slight weight was suddenly far too heavy for him to even consider moving, his muscles and bones melting under her ministrations. She knew his body just as he knew her own; she knew how to play every weak spot just right.
"Here I can make it easier."
She nipped at his throat, leaving small, light bruises down the sensitive skin. Lordy, he loved that. She knew he loved that.
 "Fill in the blank."
He lips were by his ear, small, pink tongue tracing the shell lightly. Oh Lordy.
"You are my Blank."
Thin fingers wound their way through his tousled, tangled locks, tugging ever so slightly.they grazed the sensitive nape of his neck, sending a shiver of goosebumps skittering down his spine.
 "I am your Blank."
Those same wonderful, torturous hands slipped down to his shoulders, fingertips flexing around the muscle. Kovu was lean, but every muscle was taut, a wire stretched too thin, ready to snap at a moment's notice.
 "We are Blank.”
Her attention finally flew to his chest, fingers dragging over his shirt heavily, coming to rest atop his belt-loops. She teased the edge of his shirt maddeningly, and Kovu arched his back fervently, silently demanding her touch.
He stammered a few more incoherent syllables as she lingered, tracing small geometric shapes on the pale skin between his hips. A flush rose to his cheeks unbidden, summoned by the wave of self-consciousness that rolled over him. Here he was, melting and blubbering over the smallest things. That bulge in his pants was unmistakable, and growing more pained by the second.
“Im sorry. I couldn’t hear you. Can you speak up?”
Her laughter was a peal of silver bells, bright and innocent, and Kovu's already flagging pride wilted. In juxtaposition to their current position, it was almost comical. Her thigh had crept up his leg, and he swore the way she pressed against him should be crime. Oh Lordy, make that a federal offense. Only she could laugh like that, so childish, yet so magnetic as she trailed a hand across the sharp lines of his hips, palming the heat in the seat of his pants lightly. Yes. That’s what he wanted, right there, and and he had to do now was—
“Well I guess you really don’t want to say anything then I could just go…”
…Where was she going?! She wasn’t just leaving him here like this, was she?! A whine-like keen escaped his throat as he stared after her longingly, hair tousled and cheeks flushed. His eyes were almost glazed, lust shining darkly. Propped up on his elbows, Kovu appeared almost bewildered, hurt cresting upon his cheeks.
“I mean if I don’t have some title to refer to you as, you could very well be a stranger! And staying with a stranger would be oh-so horrifying, don’t you think? Now if only I had something to call you by to straighten it out. But what could I say? Who are you to me? Who am I to you?”
All that hurt, all that lust… well, now that had a funny way of morphing into anger. And when he was angry and aroused… well, let’s just say that wasn’t his best combination. His gaze shifted, lips lifting in a slight snarl. Faster than the eye could follow, he was on his feet, stalking towards her with dark intent shinning in those olive green orbs. With his body, he backed her into a tree, planting his palms firmly on the bark. She was trapped now, with his arms on both sides of her, body pressing to her own wantonly. He was merciless, demanding, with a wild look that could only spell trouble. Even so, he took care that she didn’t scratch her skin open on the bark, dark eyes locked on her own.
“You want me to fill in the blanks,” he purred huskily. Even with his coy posturing, the inquisitive tilt of his head, you could read the barely concealed anger, see his restraint wavering. “Then I’ll give you a damn response. But I’ll only say it once.”
“You are my world,” he began, word rusty, tone far too gruff for such a tender statement. Tentatively, he trailed his hand up to catch her cheek, forest green gaze softening ever so slightly as a shuddery breath slippkfed between his teeth.
“I am your knight in tarnished armor,” he mused weak attempt at humor drawing a faint smile to his lips. Amusement dusted his cheeks, but that dark, deep seated anger still smoldered there, igniting his bones with a restless energy.
"And we?" Kovu paused here, voice catching. His head came to rest upon her shoulder, chin nestled in the hollow formed by her collarbone. Lips pursed, he blew a stream of warm, soft air across her ear, teasing sort of purr rumbling in his throat  to travel across her skin. "Well, we... we are lovers." His hand dragged across the bark, coming to rest upon her hip lightly, fingertips toying with the edge of her shirt.
"We are fighters." A gruff chuckle interrupted his thoughts; Lordy, did they know how to tussle. They were rough a rumble, ready to snap and claw and argue and just live. They didn't shy away from the tough shit, oh no. They relished the bad, for it just made the good all the more sweet.
"We aren't perfect... well, maybe you are," he mused. "No no, you're perfect. I'm the fuck up here."
"But that doesn't matter right now, eh?" Kovu added, voice dropping. He was just above a whisper now, full of quiet thought. "Because for some inexplicable reason, you want me. And I want you, god damn I want to just be with you. We are one, eh? You and I... like the earth and sky..."
It was true, to him at least. She was his home, his hearth; the person that kept him grounded here, kept him from losing his mind and just flying away. He was the sky, ever changing, fickle, moody... and yet for some reason, she stayed; for some unknown, crazy reason, she stayed.
And for that, he would be forever grateful.
Her laughter was all high notes, the sweet, clear sound of silver bells pealing. He never tired...
