john and kahlil from the Rifter series by ginn hale. reading these books was some of the most fun i've had with m/m fantasy in a long time. highly recommended.

“Then Jahn wasn´t such a bad choice?” “I suppose it wasn´t.” Ravishan reached past John to pull a spray of pine needles from the branch above them.

“So you saved the candidate´s life?” Ravishan pulled one of the needles loose from the rest, and after a moment, let it drop to the ground.

“I don´t know.” John shrugged. “He was pretty well guarded. He might have been fine without my help.” “The Issusha`im Oracles foresaw his death.” Ravishan shifted to face John, his hip and elbow resting lightly against the smooth alabaster. He leaned close, keeping his voice low “But you stopped it.” ________________________________________________________________ I don´t think I will ever stop screaming about just how good The rifter series by Ginn Hale is. I´m currently reading the books again for the third time and while I´m not too happy with how this turned out (because I have this very clear image of John and Ravishan in my mind) I just couldnt resist. Seriously, go read the rifter! ♥

This series has gorgeous maps and some of the best bonus content of any book I’ve read. There is a bunch of cool illustrations at the end of the last book, a dictionary of Basawar words, a family tree, and an extra short story! It’s so sad that they’re out of print! I’m holding on to hope that one day @blindeyebooks will do a relaunch! 🙏 • • • ❓Have you ever read a series that didn’t have a map that REALLY needed one? 🗺 I can’t believe The Queen’s Thief series didn’t get a map until the FIFTH book! Another series that really needed a map was Doctrine of Labyrinths by Sarah Monette. When he got home, he’d eat tacos so spicy that his eyes would water. He’d watch television and drink cheap beer. He’d speak English loudly. He’d do things he’d never done before. He’d take Ravishan dancing and they would stay out all night.  He would take Laurie home. He’d put flowers on Bill’s memorial. He would forget about Basawar, about burning bodies, about the Rifter.

The Rifter group reread

Chapters 103-107

I don’t have many notes on these chapters. Also, I kind of messed up my notes, so if you’re confused, that’s why.

Chapter 103

-After what feels a long time, we’re finally back with Kyle being tortured.

-I can totally imagine Laurie writing English obscenities in between the sacred Payshmura writings.

-I still retain a sense of sympathy for Laurie, and I can -up to a point- understand her doing what she can to try and go back in time and keep them from going to Basawar in the first place. But at this point, she is just evil.

Chapter 104

-Yes, take the Yasi'halaun (the only thing that can kill you) back to the enemy’s stronghold, that’s a great idea, John!

-On the other hand, it saves him the trip back to fetch it

Chapter 105

-Ji’s death must be quite a shock to the Fai'daum community, as she was not only a beloved leader and trusted advisor, but she must also have been one of their only constants for a long period of time

-Rousma is so cute it kind of spoils the drama of the scene a little

Chapter 106

-I profoundly dislike the wording of things like, “women inducted into the issusha'im”, or, “sacred beds”. I could understand Ravishan thinking in those terms, as he was raised with them, but John…? It’s women being tortured in the vilest way imaginable, and I wish John wouldn’t think in euphemisms.

-If Laurie succeeded and destroyed Basawar on the process, wouldn’t Ravishan/Kyle die anyway? So there’s really no reason forJohn to do what she says

Chapter 107

-The Rifter equivalent to Harry Potter’s “All was well” : John is all right
