specifically rejecting pink and frills that u were forced into certainly isn't internalized misogyny, but for many of us, it can develop into or just come with something that is internalized misogyny, the not-like-other-girls situation.

lots of girls who reject the societally-pushed-"girliness" end up seeking friendship with people who, at the time, seem to have interests in common: boys. and in seeking friendship with boys, you quickly learn how much and in what ways most of them hate girls and women.

i'm sure there are a lot of you out there who would have been "too based" or whatever to continue to pursue friendships with anyone who thought this way, but in elementary school i desperately wanted to be accepted by and be like boys, because they were treated how i wanted to be treated, they got the respect i wanted, the gifts they got from family and friends were all things i wanted, etc. i despised being seen as and treated as a girl, because it meant constantly being directed into interests and ways of being that simply did not fit with me.

i was genuinely convinced that people must just see all women and girls as lesser (even other women and girls), and that if i denounced women and girls and their interests and mannerisms and if i became respected by boys and men, the adults in my life would give me more agency, or at least listen to me when i expressed what i was interested in.

glad i gave that shit up btw, because it will never make you happy or get you what you want. women are awesome, and it's not our fault that this society treats girls like shit. children in general NEED more agency, need to be listened to and respected. if you treat your child like a doll or a mini-me: take a Big Step Back, ask your children what they like, how they feel, and listen to them.

i have another bomb to throw, girls who hated pink and femininity in childhood were not experiencing internalized misogyny; it was a rejection of the conditioning pushed on us from birth which we never felt passion for and grew resentful towards because of adults’ insistence on us following the rules of being a girl. when you hit middle-high school and get more say in how you look it feels fucking incredible to reject and be openly hostile to the things you were forced to embrace your whole life. you people just don’t know what internalized misogyny is and tumblr choice feminism lied to you
