Anger was a new emotion for Treasure. They had been inconvenienced before, and they had absolutely been wronged, sure. But this…this was a fire. And Porter’s words, a vicious dry mix of hypocrisy and blinding truth, was the kindling.

The only truly effective way to avoid internalizing conspiracy theories and pseudoscience is to inoculate yourself against them by learning how to recognize them when you see them, which includes learning their history, their tropes, and their overall characteristics. It also includes learning information literacy and strengthening your critical thinking skills. Trying to avoid encountering them at all does nothing to inoculate you, which leaves you vulnerable to internalizing them from an unexpected source. You cannot give in to lazy/reactionary thinking on this one.

Did he just want to get away quickly? Did he not want to scare Treasure by slamming it closed? Were the curtains just blue or was it his way of very vaguely communicating that the hypothetical door to their relationship was still open? That it didn’t have to be completely over?

The State of the Fandom

This is a long, vent post about interaction and culture in the Redacted fandom. If you’re not into reading my rambly stuff, skip.

Folks. What has happened to fandom culture?? I just rebloged a long post that observes a particular problem in fandom culture at large, but I think the problem is very present in Redacted fan spaces and I want to talk about it.

Redacted is a small fandom. We have this wonderful, unique opportunity to interact with each other that often isn’t present in bigger fandoms. There are weeks where there are only one or two fics posted to Redacted’s Ao3 tag. But I’ve found that, excluding a few pieces, they don’t tend to get the interaction I experienced in the early days of posting Redacted fic.

I want to state first and foremost that I am so lucky and grateful for the attention my firefighter au in particular has garnered. It’s blown my mind how much support and love I’ve received on it.

But whenever I post something besides the FFAU, even one shots from within that universe, I receive perhaps a tenth of the interaction that I do on the main story. It seems I struck gold in the main FFAU story and every other writer I know is experiencing the same issue I am with my other pieces. People just aren’t interacting anymore.

I posted a poll recently asking my tumblr followers what they wanted me to write next for the FFAU. Something like 30 of the 78 people who voted in the poll voted for a David/Angel piece. I posted that a few days ago, and I’ve received 2 comments. I’m overjoyed and thankful for those two comments, but that compared to the 30 people who presumably wanted to read that makes me sad.

Writing is a solitary act. By and large, you have to do it alone. It’s time consuming and difficult and often boring. It’s in the act of publishing that that art is shared and given a deeper value, at least for me. That’s doubly true for fanworks. Fandom is about interaction, and when I write, it’s to add to the culture. It’s supposed to be a conversation. I get a taste of that when it comes to my FFAU, but I feel the absence when it comes to everything else I write.

I’ve also noticed a theme of talking about stories in spaces the author can’t see or isn’t invited into. I’ve heard about private discord servers discussing popular stories without the author ever knowing about it. I’ve seen posts in tumblr about “the firefighter au” where people discuss it or praise it, all without tagging me. That’s particularly frustrating, given I have my blog name in the notes if all of my stories AND it and my username on Ao3 are almost identical. I don’t know. I’m not sure how to process that.

Anyway, I don’t know if I have a solution for any of this. What I will say is that I will be making a more concerted effort to read a lot more Redacted fic and commenting a whole lot more than I do. I’ll be going back to some of my old faves, so expect to see me around.

What difference do you think the feeling is between dying in a car crash and dying in a rollercoaster accident. High speed, high impact, next to a beating heart. The difference between having your girlfriend force herself on you, corrupt you with her poisoned veins. The difference between being lifted up and out of a rollercoaster chair - like a child asleep, being lifted from a car - and into your father’s arms. To be held. Held down, embraced, what’s the difference when it feels like nails are digging into your skin.

When your girlfriend won’t apologies for forcefully making you live, when you wanted to die. When you want to die because you can’t help but live. When you cut off your ex lover because she can’t help but love the idea of you rather than mourn your corpse. When you cut off your father because he left you all alone, and paid more attention to the other children when you just wanted him to hold you again. Embrace me, love me, you made me alive again, so why can’t you let me live? Why is this survival so tormenting that the person who brought life cannot help but to ignore the living corpse they put into the world?

Hold my hand. If we are strangers on a rollercoaster, or lovers in a car. If she’s holding you down. If he’s lifting you up. At least they are holding you.

How can we fault him for holding onto William, when we don’t even know if he was ever held?

So I see everyone arguing about the Lastest video and I got. Opinions.

Namely- are we okay? Are we listening to the same audio?

Porter and Treasure Both apologized, it's In The Video, Porter shuts them down but they do. And they SHOULD have because despite Porter's issues, of which he has many, this is a relationship, crossing their arms and going "yes it was all 100% your fault I was completely blameless" is not fucking productive to healthy communication. Treasure Ignored Ported when he told them like 4 fucking times to stop pressing the issue, it doesn't matter what the issue itself was or if that was warranted, it's still a shitty thing to do to try to steamroll over your partners Direct Request, like since when is that okay to do? If someone tells you five times they're pissed off and to leave them alone and you Don't, you can't be surprised when they react poorly. Even if his reaction was extremely disproportionate, it didn't come out of nowhere.

In regards to William, is nuance in the room with us? The man didn't go from saint to Satan, he was revealed to be more complex, and to be honest did we not expect this of him? Did we all really think a 500 year old rich and powerful man who calls himself a King didn't have some skeletons in the closet? He works in real estate!

This doesn't change his character. Sam said it himself, William's flaw isn't what he does or how he does it, is the fact he doesn't believe himself capable of making a mistake- which I also don't believe, that statement read to me more so like he can't allow himself to make mistakes, and Sam is reading it more negatively than it is- but that's just my very biased opinion, because that's all we have! We don't have William's POV to really judge!

When it comes to Porter, do we Know if William is purposefully taking advantage of the man's trauma to keep him as a pawn? Do we know that's what's happening? It sure seems that way, because surely a man as old and seemingly smart as William wouldn't be oblivious to the basic psychology at play here. But we still don't know, all we have is Porter's feelings on the matter.

TLDR: Porter and Treasure are communicating fine despite the absolute trainwreck that is Porter, William is a morally gray complex character which doesn't make him Evil, and I am Tired.

I thought they also apologized about crossing a boundary at the beginning. Porter says he is sorry for saying cruel things and then they say they are sorry for crossing a boundary and then he talks for 20 minutes about said boundary.

Also yes, what the listener says is inferred by what the boi says, but the listener character says whatever YOU want them to say.

let's all just use our brains for a second please. "treasure didn't apologize!" "treasure was wrong too!" YEAH OBVIOUSLY but was there not a point where there was definitely space for them to apologize as well and Porter shut it down? like the part where they (i think, at least) apologized for calling him a coward and porter immediately shut it down and said "no, you were right." hello???

also, for what it's worth, that was almost 20 straight minutes of Porter talking NON STOP ‼️ there was no room for Treasure to get a word in edge wise. AND IT'S IMPLIED THEY WERE GONNA SPEND THE NIGHT TALKING ABOUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND BOUNDARIES AND THEY PROBABLY APOLOGIZED IN THAT CONVERSATION
