Progress is being made, he isn’t worried. The Asset is aware of the new updates that are going to be administered to them on Saturday.

He didn’t realize how long he was staring at his calendar until his eyes burned. Blinking, he briefly appreciated the days and the existence of time. Mundane and inherent things to every human being on Terra.

He isn’t worried. It’s appreciation for life and all its fleeting factors.

The Asset will be getting their new updates in a week. The ETS building has been all but tripping over themselves trying to get everything in order. It’s to be expected. For about a year — maybe even two — the Asset has been at a developmental standstill. The sudden shift of their interest and our rapidly increasing need for them to do their job has been a shock to the lab workers.

It’s a busy morning. Good morning.

It’s been a bit. Work has taken up a lot of my free time recently. We’re currently working up towards getting the Asset new upgrades, it should be happening on the 24th, I believe.

…Beef stroganoff. It’s something I used to eat a lot growing up. My dad got sick of cooking it all the time so I eventually learned how to make it myself.

Ok James, I'm going to be honest with you. Android or not, that is not good for ANYONE. The asset deserves to have a chance to get angry, to vent to let out things that have been pent up before I explode.

I speak from experience.

You’re acting as if I told them to regulate their feelings this way.

I’d understand and maybe even be more sympathetic if this were any other case. If we had time to let the Asset evaluate their complex emotions, and heal. But we don’t. We don’t have time. The meridian threatens to fall every waking moment we don’t do something. As extensive as our resources are, we don’t even know how long we have left.

You’re coming from a place of concern. I get that. But with a situation that threatens the fabric of reality itself, I find it exceedingly difficult to value an individual’s emotions over every organism on Terra. If we drag this out longer than we can afford, there won’t even be a reality to feel anger in.

Not really, just curious. Although I will admit... I was expecting a bit more... Anger, on their part when confronting Marcus.

Heard about that, did you?

Anger is displayed in a multitude of ways. Even if they weren’t screaming at Marcus outright, threatening him within an inch of his life, or any other display — that doesn’t mean they aren’t angry. They’re still angry. The anger they feel is deep-seated, it’s raw and it’s real, and I don’t believe it will ever go away.

However, the asset has a purpose. They understand their purpose and how dire it is. They’re willing to put their anger aside for the cause.

Well, that's good. At least they're gaining some hint of personality back.

They are. It’s important that they are.

Is there a reason you wanted to know?

Fair enough. How is the Asset, by the way?

They’ve been adjusting. Still inquisitive as ever. They have started asking questions about the magical world and… well, me. Last week, they asked how it feels to call upon magic. The other day, they asked me what telepathy feels like. Today, they asked if they could meet a demon to further their understanding.

Of course, what’s told to you through documents and data isn’t the end-all-be-all of your understanding of a subject but – it’s good seeing them show interest in… something again.

Consider the fact that while we've heard of other workers, we only actively SEE two. You and Marcus. Marcus is a pathetic weasel, so you seem to be the only good one in comparison.

Marcus shouldn’t even be present in the equation. He doesn’t work for us anymore, nor does he have contact with the asset. His actions were manipulative and deplorable. He was a sad, lonely man nursing a heartbreak – and the way he nursed said heartbreak was to make sure nothing and no one could leave him again. Even if he couldn’t admit the words to himself.

I am doing my job. If the way I’ve been proceeding with my job is seen as “good”, whatever that means to you, then who am I to tell you otherwise.

No but the fact YOU'RE the only halfway decent person at ETS says something

Putting morality aside, the majority of those working at the current center are unempowered. None of them fully understand the asset’s importance – I don’t expect them to. When human beings interact and are expected to facilitate something they don’t understand, a varying list of attitudes becomes present. Curiosity, fear… jealousy.

Unfortunately for us, jealousy and disinterest for the asset overshadowed any lingering curiosity existing within Ecumen. If you were to meet any of my empowered peers, you’d see that I am not some outlier of human decency in this place. I’m just the only one in the building.

(sighs) ...They said this would help. I told them that I didn't need external help, that — that I was assigned to this job because they valued my objectivity. I'm in my position because they know that whatever it is they want me to do, I will get it done. Whatever it takes. Especially in these circumstances where we can’t afford anymore setbacks – my feelings on the matter be damned.

They… (strained sigh) they said that’s the entire reason they suggested this. I don’t know what about my demeanor gave the impression that my attitude towards the situation was — concerning. Stoicism should be inevitable when you are glaringly aware that the fate of reality itself rests under your supervision. I believe I’m allowed distance.

My employers came to the conclusion that using audio logs is an adequate way of personal therapy. To quote, “if you keep your opinionated thoughts inside of you for too long, they’ll consume you. (tense) They’ll ruin you, just like they ruined Marcus.”

Ah yes, and the disregard and breaking of company regulations, multiple acts of sexual misconduct, damaging ETS property, lying to your coworkers, lying to your company, and not only facilitating your manipulative relationship with the asset but also feeding into it – it was all an accident. A clumsy, unintentional accident. How foolish of me to think otherwise.
