Woke up at 2am and couldn’t fall back asleep so I made a tutorial on the Photoshop techniques I use most frequently. Starting with the sketch:

adjustment layers: specifically the hue/saturation slider in this case, allows you to color correct quickly

lasso tool: for sharp edges!

alpha lock: useful for painting within a pre-defined area (especially useful when painting characters)

x (hotkey) : toggle between foreground + background colors- let’s you easily blend between 2 colors

ctrl/cmd click : quickly change current active layer. Especially useful if you’re burdened with too many layers (or just very disorganized)

clipping mask: similar to alpha lock, but can add details without changing/ painting directly on the previous layer. I often use them to test out + apply gradients.

layer styles: I didn’t use any in this image, but the possibilities for layer styles endless, from simply adding a quick outline (useful for die cut demarcations when making stickers!) to creating more seemingly complex appearances. Here’s a gif of Nick Carver using layer styles (a combo of drop shadows + inner shadows) to quickly make the illusion of snow but with simple strokes.

high quality expression references with varied facial types

I finally managed to acquire a poncho in the style of the ones my characters in my comic wear and these are the first in a series of studies of it I’m making. Ponchos are very unusual and it’s wonderful that I no longer have to guess how they look if I’m caught with a strange pose.

“You felt the dress you were wearing begin to stick to your skin, the fabric saturated with rain, but you didn’t care. The storm wasn’t cold, the air still thick with the heat of the day. You twirled around once more, before running back to the shelter. You shook yourself slightly, droplets of water flying off your skin, before stooping down to sit on the floor, pushing wet tendrils of hair out of your face. Grabbing your sketch book, you licked your lips slightly, flicking to a fresh page. You squinted up at the sky, plucking a piece of charcoal from the small pile you had scooped up and began sketching the clouds onto the paper.

You grinned as you furiously worked, adding colors and texture, your hands slowing becoming covered in ink and charcoal. But as the rain thinned, and the clouds began to disperse, you felt your drawing slow. You looked at the abstract version of the storm you had sketched and frowned, considering it slightly. You frowned deeper, and as you did an image flashed across your mind.

You hesitated, but slowly picked up a pencil. You began to craft the storm clouds in your sketch carefully. You swept your pencil across the paper, pulling the clouds into a more considered shape. You added a jawline, the slope of a nose, eyes. You smoothed and sketched the rolling storm into a sweep of hair. You felt yourself losing focus of your surroundings, lost in your sketching.”

This scene was such an inspiration and it really resonated with me. The whole mood and atmosphere created in this scene was so beautiful and there is something absolutely mystical about drops dancing in the middle of a storm and the piece she crates afterwards. I have imagined so many different pieces inspired by this scene and I finally managed to sit down and paint one of them! I know I’m a bit late because I told you I’d post it awhile ago but I kept going back and changing things because I was worried you wouldn't like it or it didn't look like Chen and I’m still really nervous but I have gathered enough courage to finally show it to you! Ahh and I wanted to write more here and use better words but I think if I don’t post it now I will become too scared.
