FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - The Chicago Reader Accuses Local Artist of Twinkling - Swerp Records' Official Response Follows CHICAGO, IL - Swerp Records LLC has recently been made aware of a news article by the Chicago Reader regarding the twinkliness of one of our artists, My Dad. The article, available at ChicagoReader.com, alleges a comparison between the sound of My Dad's debut album, Stunts, to the sound of twinkle artists Into It. Over It., CSTVT, and Everyone Everywhere, among others. We at Swerp take these allegations seriously, and wish to address them. "Twinklecore", an offshoot of the slang term "Twinkle Daddies", is a joke disguised as a genre disguised as a joke, described by Urban Dictionary as "Those emo-ish bands with the twinkly guitars and the hoarse vocals". While other terms such as "post-hardcore" and "midwest emo" have been used to describe the sound in recent years, they have not achieved widespread use, due to the fact they are even less effective at describing the genre's sound than the term "twinklecore". We regret that My Dad's furious, feedback driven sound was confused for the complex trebly melodies of the "twinkle" movement. We further regret that the My Dad live show, incorporating exceptional pedal effects and two syncopated drummers going HAM, was interpreted for the visceral punk attitude associated with twinkle. We would additionally like to apologize for the confusion of those who are not familiar with the genre "twinkle", and instead have read this release looking for allegations of Twinkies™, a popular snack pastry created by the Hostess corporation. Going forward, we at Swerp encourage journalists to use these alternate terms to describe the "twinkle" sound as it applies to any of our artists, to prevent any further confusion. Please use the alternatives, "Fat Metal," "Meatgaze," "Sad Jazz," "Post-Corpse," "Polish Party Anthems," "Scum," "Gargoyle Funk," "Trashy Bluegrass," "Lawsuit Bait," or "Michael Bay Presents: Post-Hardcore". For further inquiries, please contact Ian Sutherland at [email protected], or by phone at 312.834.1535. This is the best thing I've ever typed. We are proud to announce our newest signing, the world-beating UK noise-pop titans JOHNNY FOREIGNER! This is a big moment for us at Swerp - Johnny Foreigner is quite literally our favorite band from outside the USA. They're well-known in the UK and Japan, but aside from a brief tour with Los Campesinos!, the haven't had much of a presence on this side of the Atlantic. We're here to change that. Hold onto your pants, we have a LOT of stuff to announce, including a US/Canadian Tour (part-way with Nervous Passenger), an all-new EP available for pre-order, the re-release of Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything, and two Chicago dates, VS CHICAGO at Subterranean, and VS SWERP at Swerp Mansion. Keep an eye on our Facebook feed for updates throughout the day!!! http://swerprecords.com/johnny-foreigner

About Us
It starts with a band. For most people, at least. For me, it was a comic book shop in a suburban town called Lansing that introduced me to Albatross. I had been to a couple of concerts before that, mostly just big venues with my parents, but nothing small, intimate, or raw. That day was the first day I experienced local music, and I was introduced to the first real friends I had in my life.
Over the next six years, I saw dozens of bands and hundreds of shows come from the South Suburbs of Chicago, and later, from all corners of the city. Lights. De Triomphe. The Jacks. Probably Vampires. Audible Empire. Richard Def. The Articulators. Sauk Bother. Hellbender. The Para-Medics. Mishu. High Society. Battles of the Bands on lawns and in gymnasiums. The final Albatross show at the Lighthouse. Every crappy local festival. The Pancake Haus. Stephan’s House. Winter Show. Metaphysics. Every Big Show. The first Sooper Secret set. Bands that changed who I was as a person, and shows that transformed the lives of those around me, and goddamnit, they were so good.
A community grew around these bands, not only for their musical skill, but for the company of like-minded people who cared about these shared experiences. Hundreds were drawn to the music, listened to demos like they were classics, and spent meager allowances on tickets. And yet, there was a glass ceiling. Whether from bad luck, poor planning, or the impossible signal-to-noise of the internet, many of these bands would never break free of the confines of comic book stores. Bands would live, thrive, play dozens of shows, and die, without a single recording, website, or lasting document, their only memory left in the .jpgs of old posters destined to vanish in a server disconnection.
When we decided to start Swerp, the reasoning was both of preservation and creation. We were going to get organized, we were going to set our sights high, and we were going to do what had previously been impossible – break free and break out. We would take the music that we knew could succeed if given an outlet, and get it to each and every person who would appreciate it as much as we have. If you’re reading this, you are one of them.
Our objectives at Swerp are threefold;
1. To bring our music and our friends’ music to as many ears as they can find willing to listen.
2. To play as many shows as humanly possible with as much energy and passion and fury as our bodies will allow, and to bring as many awesome people as we can find to these shows in shared enjoyment.
3. To be able to make, enjoy, produce, play, promote, shoot, and celebrate music amongst our friends and community, locally and globally, as long as we can, in defiance of the threats of old age and coin.
This is why I fight. This is why we play.
This is why we are on some serious SWERP.
