someone comments "you have such a natural talent and love for this and it is so evident" on a post of my art from my first year of art school
i stare at it, pleased but also frustrated. I like when people praise my art, i like when people recognize me for the hard work I've put into my art for what feels like my whole life. But I don't like when people imply or outright state that this is natural, because it's not.
Some things have come more intuitively than others, like mixing paint or composition, but those were still skills that have been honed over years and years and years.
I didn't pop out of the womb as picasso, no one did (except maybe picasso but thats besides the point). It's frustrating to me because it puts me and other artists on this pedestal of "unachievable." but it is achievable, it always is, it just takes time and patience with yourself.
Art is one of those things that i feel is something everyone can do and as an artist who loves to share art with the world, whether it comes in the form of little tips and encouragements or posting my art on social media, I want to share art with the world.
I still have more to learn, the art I make now will not be as good as the art i make 10 years from tomorrow. My art is a craft I will hone to a sharp point, yet i will never perfect it because perfection is the antithesis of expression, all I can do is keep working.
I reply with a simple "thank you :D"

Our Japanese class found it funny that in common terminology "food" isn't very distinguished from specifically "rice" until it was pointed out to us that in English "meal" is "loose roughly ground grain"

reminder that "allies welcome" was once secret code for "those not out yet can still participate without putting themselves at risk", and for those who aren't out yet to comfortably exist in these spaces you have to let allies exist in those spaces too.
