Prologue

White Room Theory

There is no sound when Fyodor opens his eyes. No hum of electricity, no rustle of air. Only the color white — not pure, but flat. Endless. A sterile kind of silence, an embalmer wrapping the room in gauze.

The floor is smooth beneath his palms. Warm, inexplicably. He sits up.

Across the room — if it can be called that — Nikolai is already watching.

He’s seated cross-legged, coat draped off one shoulder like a curtain half-drawn, hands folded in his lap with mock reverence. He grins when Fyodor moves. A grin without context. Without comfort.

“Good morning, sleeping beauty,” Nikolai says. “Or is it night? Or decade three of the same hour?”

Fyodor doesn’t answer. His gaze moves across the space: no seams, no corners. The light comes from nowhere. Even shadows won’t form here.

Nikolai tilts his head. “Not going to ask where we are?”

“I know you wouldn’t tell me,” Fyodor replies. His voice is quiet, level. It doesn’t echo.

“A wise assumption,” Nikolai says, pleased. “Or maybe you already know and just don’t like the answer.”

He rises, movements too smooth. Walks to one wall and presses a hand to it. It doesn’t give. Nothing ever does.

“I named this place,” Nikolai says. “Want to know?”

“No.”

“It’s called the Waiting Room. Has a nice ring, doesn’t it?”

Fyodor stands. Thirty-one steps to the wall. Thirty-one back. Each footfall absorbed by the nothing.

“You’ll get bored of that,” Nikolai says. “I did. Somewhere around my fifth breakdown.”

“What is this?” Fyodor asks. Not a demand. A diagnosis.

Nikolai smiles too brightly. “A rehearsal, maybe. A punishment. Or just the in-between place people like us end up in. Until something breaks.”

He steps in close — not threatening, just present. Too present. Fyodor doesn’t move.

“There is no door,” Nikolai whispers, almost gently. “But feel free to keep looking.”

Fyodor already is. And Nikolai is already watching.
