Appearance

I wanted to give Ernest a way to distinguish himself from other Corporate Security Drones, so most of the time he wears a cap – something that hides his head injury. He also received grey irises, because the previous blank white eyes could unsettle the crew members. (Also his nose wasn’t originally bumpy, he suffered blunt trauma to his nose.)

He is inspired by Davis One from the comics, who wears glasses because he wants to differentiate himself from the others. Quote "They're a reminder to myself. I can sometimes feel unnerved when looking at my squad mates - perfect replicas of myself, when I feel anything but. I know they're an affectation. Maybe I shouldn't wear them.”

David also has a habit of dyeing his hair, because he loves Lawrence of Arabia. So I wanted to give Ernest a different look as well. However, unlike Davis and David, Ernest has difficulty with being different.

Background & Behavior 

He’s been laid off from security and combat operations due to an incident, where he misjudged a situation and got people hurt or killed. This happened shortly after he received a deep wound on his skull, right between a seam that runs from ear to ear.

After taking a test, like in the Covenant short “Phobos”, it was made clear that Ernest showed more intense reactions to certain stimuli, like gunshots or sudden scares or alarms.

Quoting the wiki “Although being unable to physically feel pain, their systems are built to correspond to certain injuries and suggest alternative behavior for greater effectiveness, or even retreat from battle if necessary.”

Even though a certain level of reactivity for Corporate Security Drones is normal, Ernest displayed elevated “stress” or unnecessary intense reactions. Therefore, he was considered faulty. However, the company concluded that repairing him fully wasn’t worth it and to save costs, he was ultimately transferred to assist a crew on a low priority mission. Outside of a combat setting he worked just fine.

So basically.. he developed some kind of PTSD. Let’s say if an alarm went off in the spacecraft, it wouldn’t be good. Ernest also displays some signs of OCD. He feels the need to double-check things. He does things in a certain order.

Is Ernest sentient? Yes..? I think due to his head trauma it caused him to develop free will. He’s different than most synthetics. He’s an individual like David or Davis.
