I’ve been dying to post Pauline Acalin’s new Hidden Figures Lego t-shirt for a while now, but we were waiting till we had something extra special to go with it…
The design celebrates the previously hidden (or ignored) contributions of Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson and many more women like them to the early days of our space program. And now each tee sold will help support today’s women of color in STEM!
If you don’t already know about VanguardSTEM, you need to check them out. Founded by Jedidah Isler, astrophysicist and trailblazer extraordinaire, Vanguard STEM is a monthly live chat web-series with a rotating panel of women of color in STEM discussing everything from research to advice to current events. The goal of the community is: “to create conversations between emerging and established women of color in STEM, where we can celebrate and affirm our identities and STEM interests in a safe space.”
VanguardSTEM recently formed the SeRCH Foundation (STEM en Route to CHange) non-profit:
We are dedicated to using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as a tool for social justice. We focus on the representation, cultivation and amplification of the voices and experiences of persons of color and other marginalized bodies as they navigate and make impacts on the STEM environment and culture. We use an intersectional framework to engage the overlapping identities and discrimination that marginalized communities face without minimizing any aspect of their humanity.
Half the proceeds for all Hidden Figures t-shirts sold will be donated the SeRCH Foundation. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…
Make a donation directly to SeRCH between now and next Wednesday (September 6th) and you could win one of these shirts! Just tweet, FB message, or email us a copy/screenshot of your receipt and we’ll enter you in the drawing. We will announce TWO winners on the blog at the end of next week.
Sorry, not sorry for the epic post, but here’s to Pauline and Jedidah for “Women Crushing-it Wednesday.” Go help both of them continue to crush it and continue to celebrate and support women in STEM!

Space X-mas
My ugly X-mas sweater tribute to the folks making it happen. <3 Since it’s a bit late in the season and I don’t think orders will be received before xmas, this design will be 20% in my shop off until 12/18. Nonetheless...here it is! Yay! by Pacalin

What an awesome write-up by Emily at STARtorialist! And look at these gentlemen spreading the science. Thank you for the lovely photos! <3

What’s better than one adorable startorialist? How about three, wearing matching t-shirts featuring Lego mini-fig versions of two more?!
These photos were submitted by Jo, a former students of mine, featuring her son-in-law, grandson, and husband Bob - the generations of startorialists! The shirt is Space is Awesome by the equally awesome @pacalin! From Jo:
I got them the shirts for Christmas […] Brian (6 years old) knows who Bill and Neil are. Since retiring, I have had time to spend learning about our awesome universe and your class inspired me to continue. You filled in many pieces of the puzzle and I still rely on the info you taught to continue learning on my own. [I learned a lot from Jo & Bob, who are retired teachers! -E] I have definitely inspired Brian to study the stars and universe. He wants to be an Astrophysicist. His Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers were very impressed that he knew that word.
I bet Brian knows more than the word, especially with such wonderful grandparents as role models!
About the shirt - once again, @pacalin‘s attention to detail astounds me. Of course there is Neil’s vest and Bill’s bow tie, and Neil is holding Newton’s Principia, but then in the background there is Cassini orbiting Saturn (at first I thought it could be Voyager, but the gold spacecraft and the long boom are giveaways), and then there’s Enceladus spewing material from its south pole!
Check out all of @pacalin‘s designs at Neato Shop!

I love this so much! Summer, one of the gals who runs the incredibly sensational blog STARtorialist, rocking the heck out of Cosmic Waistcoat.

Every wanted to dress like Neil Tyson and think “If only I had a vest as cool as his?” DREAMS. ANSWERED.
One of our favorite science t-shirt designers has come to the rescue with a fabulous t-shirt version of Neil’s famed vest. This “cosmic waistcoat” tee is by Pauline Acalin and is available via Tee Fury.
I wore mine while standing in for Neil last week at Cosmos on Tap and managed to fool the man himself into thinking I had a vest just like his…although it was over FaceTime in a dark bar when I showed it to him, BUT STILL. ;)

Emily and Summer of Startorialist relentlessly supporting my Star Women tee. Look at all these lady science folk! So honored. By the way...their blog is delicious and I want everything on it....and I’m slowly getting there. :)
Spreading science one tee at a time!

There were a lot of awesome science t-shirts at AAS 227 (and we’ll post more soon!), but my favorite is of course Star Women by @pacalin, and it was well-represented!
