Day 24 - Calm
Written for @prongsfoot-microfic
"Don't you dare tell me to calm down." Sirius' voice is ice cold, like the edge of a knife, ready to shred you into ribbons with words alone.
"Sirius--"
"No." One word. Just one word was enough for James' teeth to clack shut, for the blood to drain out of his face at the finality of it ringing around the room.
"I asked you one thing, James. What was it?"
"Si, listen to--"
"Uh-uh," Sirius tsked. "One thing. Come on, tell me, darling."
The term of endearment that usually made James feel like he was on top of a cloud, floating above the world was now deployed with the precision of a missile, a strike straight for his heart. It was all wrong--mocking and taunting and cruel. Cruel in a way Sirius Black had never been to James Potter. Cruel in a way he was with everyone else.
His answer, therefore, was a mumble. "Don't talk to Regulus."
"That's right." His voice was still sarcastic; James could hear the sneer even with his gaze fixed on the ground. "What then, pray tell, made you do the one thing I asked you not to?"
He didn't have an answer for that, just like he wasn't thinking when he actually approached Regulus. The only thing going through his mind was the look on Sirius' face, the cocktail of abject despair and pain and grief--James couldn't deal with it, not when it comes to Sirius.
So he remained silent, silent like James hated. Silent like he never was around Sirius.
"That's what I thought," Sirius finally said after a minute of utter silence. The hysterical anger has mellowed out, transformed into something else now--hurt. It is, somehow, even more unbearable.
"Of everyone," he started and James just knew--he could hear it in his tone that this would be the final blow. He closed his eyes, braced himself for impact, but it still tore through him when it came.
"Of everyone, I never thought you'd do this to me."

Steeling himself, Harry opened his mouth, just enough to give access to his tongue. The Veritaserum was tasteless, odorless, but it still sent goosebumps down his back. Or perhaps that had something to do with the way his mind suddenly felt like it was filled with cotton candy--woolly and sticky and hazy. It felt like he was back in the maze of the Third Task, only worse because there was nowhere to go, nothing to see. Harry’s thoughts screamed, fighting against the narcosis spreading through him, twined heavily with fear and panic.
He couldn't do this, he wouldn’t survive it--he was trapped, back in the Dursley’s cupboard, falling into Devils Snare, stuck in the Mirror of Erised. His limbs weren't working and his mind seemed to be controlled by another. Harry raged, pushing against the walls closing in on him, knowing he only had to go at it for a little bit before they came crumbling down around him.
He could get out, he would do--
Harry, a familiar voice snaked into his thoughts, interrupting his battle so abruptly that he would’ve stumbled into the ground if he was standing. Harry, it’s okay, let go.
I can’t, he screamed, they’ll take me away.
No one will harm you, Harry, the voice reassured him, and there was something about it--perhaps the warmth, the comfort--that made him actually listen. Consider, for a second, where he was.
The panic receded, leaving only the cotton candy heaviness behind. It didn’t feel quite so daunting anymore, now that he remembered what was happening. The trial, Veritaserum…the Dementors!
He had to tell the truth; he couldn’t back out. Their entire strategy depended on the success of today. Harry forced his brain to cooperate, his lips to move as another voice pierced the barrier in his brain--this one actually real.
“--llo? Mr. Potter?”

i think when harry brings his first partner home, james would be losing his shit like ‘MY BABYS GROWING UP’ and sirius would get the gender-neutral shovel talk ready and lily would be the only one attempting to be normal except she’s only marginally better.

okay so i was thinking and…i’ve got some more sorry
- wearing handmade bracelets and rings for the sole purpose of fiddling with them. at any given time, he has like various leather cords and beaded bracelets and atleast one pendant on his person. rings are temporary, depending on how his skin feels that day, but constantly shifting it around his fingers helps.
- definitely the forgetful kind. doing a task is never A to B. it’s A to D to H to B to D to C to A again to J to Y to B to Z. he’s always walking back and forth because he forgot one little thing and now he needs to start all over again.
- hyperfixates on quidditch to the point of forgetting everything else. sirius has to make sure he’s fed and watered and not running into any walls/doors. he’ll make so many diagrams and plans and back up plans and practice over and over again bc he needs to get it right before he unleashes it on others.
-on that note, he’s definitely a List Person. he has so many pieces of parchment (and the aforementioned wizarding sticky notes) around him, in his bag, under his pillow, stuffed in his bag etc which are just variations of to-do lists. whenever things get too overwhelming and there’s too much work, he sits down and makes a list to delineate stuff.
- goes too long without blinking when he’s focused on something and then spends half the day blinking like a madman bc his eyes are irritated and too dry. sirius basically invented a spells that imitates the function of eye drops bc it was becoming a Problem.
- another thing he does when it becomes Too Much: find the tightest space he can and wedge himself into it. this is similar to sirius wrapping him in a tight hug bc in these times, he feels like he’s floating away and needs the pieces of himself to be brought back together so he doesn’t disintegrate.
- he doesn’t bruise easily but he definitely has many scars and burn marks and scratches etc from bumping into things, not realising he’s too close to sharp objects, and placing a hand on hot surfaces without realising it. can’t walk around objects for the life of him so he’s always hitting parts of his body against the corner of things. embarrassingly, he once broke his littlest toe by not seeing where he was going and tripping over his own foot in a way that most of the pressure came down on that one finger.
so we’re talking adhd!james, eh?
- taking his glasses off when it gets Too Much. it’s the most direct way he can control the amount of input he receives and he makes liberal use of it. doesn’t matter that he’s blind as a bat w/o them; it’s worth the momentary peace and quiet.
- absolutely a chatterbox who jumps around topics frequently. keeping up with him is a Whole Task and u need to train urself before u can become adept at it. also!! james’ mind runs faster than his mouth, sometimes, so he eats syllables in his haste to say everything before the thought leaves his mind. stumbling over words, zoning out midway, flipping letters is super common.
- also! james grew up super pampered and protected, right? his parents always accommodated his quirks and behaviours. never made him feel he should be guilty or ashamed of himself. he’s never faced any criticism/judgement but then he comes to hogwarts. where kids are mean little shits and have no concept of sensitivity or empathy and they make fun of his occasional stutter and his messy clothes/hair and the ink stains on his hands and the peeling skin around his nails and lips and he’s just like,,,,’how do i deal with this what did i do’. his instinct is to internalise this judgement, think it’s him who did something wrong. sometimes he shuts down bc it’s better than trying to understand why he’s being laughed at or made fun of.
- of course, there’s sirius who knows, understands, and loves these parts of him!!! both a j/s universe and not—he’s james’ biggest cheerleader and while there probably aren’t any adhd diagnoses being thrown around the WW, james realised there’s some things about him that are different & can become conscious of those. so, protective sirius. (but like also. i’ve talked ab this multiple times so i’ll stop lol)
- james loves playing with sirius’ hair bc it’s so silky and receptive to experimentation. it also acts as a destressor for him bc the rhythmic, routine movements of parting and combing and braiding give him the time + space to focus on something other than the overstimulation around him. plus, physical contact with sirius in itself is a Thing for him. he knows sirius’ body better than his own at this point. can recognise the curved and muscles by touch alone. it’s enough to slow him down.
- james with a terrible working memory. he basically invented the wizarding version of sticky notes so he’d stop writing all over his assignments and tables and hands (both his and everyone around him). whenever he needs to remember something important, he keeps repeating it to himself under his breath so he doesn’t forget. it’s not uncommon to see a distracted james potter walking from point a to point b, head down, eyes halfway closed, mumbling something like a mantra.
- constantly fidgeting with his wand. twirling it around his fingers; sticking it behind his ear, taking it out, putting it back there. cycle repeats multiple times; bouncing legs and fingers. the whole deal. absolutely cannot stay still. it’s why chaser is so good for him. it requires the most amount of effort and activity. (but at the same time, having a snitch is basically like a wixen fidget toy)
- same with quills, tbh. it’s why ink stains are his dearest friend. he’ll have them over his fingers, clothes, mouth (from chewing on it), ears (bc he keeps tucking them there) and nose (as he keeps rubbing the feathery part over his face)

No, tell us about the dorm parties and Lily finding out about them, pretty please
ooooh a tag question! love these too hehe
okay so. a lil bit of backstory: i had a semi-wild teen life, ykno? like. not as crazy as ~american high school movies but in the context of the country i grew up in? pretty unreal. there were parties and alcohol and weed and a lot of hooking up. so much petty drama. so much irreverence.
point is: i dont like it when teens are portrayed as some pure, untouched, prudish creatures who've never heard of fun or drugs or sex. it just doesnt fit with what i know.
and i fully believe that hogwarts--a boarding school where kids have MAGIC (which really just means unending possibilites)--was a place where the students went wilddd. one of the ways? dorm parties. u have these private spaces for just you and like. 5 others. u can do a shit ton with ur wand. why wouldnt u use it for parties ykno?
so yeah, i think the common room had larger parties after like. quidditch wins and end of exams, but bc its more people and more younger kids, u had to be more careful. dorm parties tho? smaller, more intimate, and ur with the people u know/trust so crazier shit will happen.
the marauders were invited to a lot of them in the girls dorms (and vice versa) and ykno. they went to a lot. bc teen boys and girls. it was all very scandalous--booze and short skirts and shirts unbuttoned off their shoulders and hazy smoke filling the room and lipstick marks smeared over chins and necks and the like--and incredibly fun. just kids being kids, yeah?
lily, though. i've long been playing w the idea that her friendship w snape (and chastisement of james--and sirius, to a lesser extent) came w a substantial social cost. her defending someone who was so shady didnt win her any points and i hc as her a person who hid her insecurity w self righteousness (on top of just. being a bit of an abrasive person) which didn't win her additional favors. so even her dormmates maintained a certain distance and the dorm parties didn't often include her. she only found out accidentally when she went up to the room it was happening in to get a book back and saw everyone buzzed out and dancing and more relaxed (intimate) than she'd ever seen.
it was genuinely a huge shock when she saw the boys sprawled across the room in varying stages of undress (james had a girl and a guy on a thigh each, arms wrapped around both waists; sirius was hanging upside down w a joint dangling from his lips and its a wonder he didnt choke himself to death) and she squeaked out of the room in a moment of severe cultural shock.
it was only later that she worked herself into moral outrage and just. hurt-filled anger type stuff, ykno? her roommates sort of had to give her a reality check in that moment. the marauders only blinked at her in bemusement, amused at her high-handed attempts to manage them.

Warnings/Tags: No Archive Warnings Apply--Sirius Black & James Potter Friendship, POV Lily Evans Potter, Jealous Remus Lupin, Affectionate James Potter, Affectionate Sirius Black, Minor Sirius Black/Remus Lupin, Minor James Potter/Lily Evans Potter, (start off with those two but prongsfoot is established), Insecure Remus Lupin, Supportive Lily Evans Potter, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Touchy-Feely, 'Bro'mantic affection, Miscommunication
Characters: James Potter, Sirius Black, Lily Evans Potter, Remus Lupin
Summary: Lily and Remus knew what they were getting into when they chose one half each of the infamous JamesandSirius duo--standing beside them, not in between.
Didn't they?
Atleast, that's what Lily thinks, who knows she has as much of her boyfriend's heart when it's already owned by someone else. She's quite content with it too. It's really a wonder Remus couldn't see it.
But when you've spent years pining for something (someone), giving them up feels like a fate worse than death and Remus won't let go so easily.

Lily’s dorm mates eventually were just passively arguing that her friendship with Snape was genuinely dangerous for her, because by that point not one of them held out hope that she’d listen and had more or less resigned themselves to her dying before graduation because people are dropping like flies by that time and the Muggleborn with a baby Death Eater best friend has a life expectancy of like a month (really, people are more shocked she survived ending the friendship and graduating than anything else that occurred at the school). They remain polite because otherwise the dorm situation will totally suck for several years, but they’re all privately wondering why the hell she is like this; they get that this friendship was all Lily had for a while, but they genuinely cannot understand why she’s clinging so hard to someone who is expressing beliefs that are getting people like her killed every week. But anyways, it’s pretty icy up in the dorms for several years, there’s the other roommates with Lily very much on the outside.
and the thing is--she doesn't even realise it for a long time!!! lily doesn't realise the level of animosity that's being cultivated between herself and the others, because she spends her time w snape or in the library or sitting somewhere. i do also think she had some friends here and there, in other houses etc, so she wasn't alone. or entirely isolated. but it wasnt enough for her to realise how dire the situation w her roommates was.
she also kept making it worse by insulting james, who was, in my mind, a castle favorite. he was a golden boy--always helped people, took care of the younger ones, protected the weaker students etc etc the kind of person who helps old people w their groceries ykno? lily always saw the worst side of him and never acknowledged the good and that antagonism didnt help her reputation at all.
(and this isnt even me going into the potential politics of a muggleborn snubbing a pureblood and how that would reflect on her in such a stratified society, both amongst the traditionalists and the more liberal ones bc like. thats a thing that happens. marginalised people 'acting above their station' is very much a perception weaponised against them but im not going there)
but when people see her mouthing off against james, calling him names and all, well--they're even less inclined to like her. she doesnt really mind it, until she does. after the mudblood incident when she's w/o her closest friend for the first time and cannot be insulated anymore. she has to deal w whats happening.
and i think that's when she really realises the true state of affairs.

First, feel free to give us the deliciousness of Lily’s conversation with her roommates about the dorm parties.
Second, I also hc that Lily wasn’t all that popular; she’s not only freely hanging out with a guy who calls Muggleborns slurs and calling this guy her best friend, she is actively making excuses for him. I absolutely see her roommates as side eyeing the fuck out of her for this and kind of holding her at a distance. They find her nice enough to hang out with and it’s not horrible in the dorms, and they’re encouraging her to end her friendship with Snape (in large part because they are genuinely worried she’s going to be murdered because of it, such as by Voldemort ordering Snape to kill her as initiation, Snape killing her to prove to his wannabe Death Eater friends that he’s not defending Muggleborns and he’s going to join with them, someone like Avery killing her because she’s a mudblood he has easy access to because of her friendship with one of his roommates, etc. Like, a large chunk of people near Lily thought she’d die because of this friendship and they turned out to be right albeit in a way they never expected), but they’re not super close to her because she is implicitly defending her best friend’s prejudice and thereby saying she doesn’t care what’s happening to everyone else because of it. Mary in particular is hardcore judging her
anon i am putting it on my absurdly long list of ideas-to-write (which has expanded suddenly?? out of nowhere?? i was in a writing/fandom slump literally three weeks ago) as we speak. as the asks come in. i will write it into the tumblr post box if nothing else.
but. but. yes! u get it! i think lily made a decision that made sense to her, obviously not knowing how the WW works and sticking to her safe space in a world that's so different and so alien to her, right? she's also the kind who'll double down instead of admitting she might be wrong and the slightly codependent/possessive friendship snily has doesnt help. and in the beginning, her roommates did try--for a long time. they tried to explain the blood dynamics, talk about snape as a person, how she's setting herself up for failure etc but lily's firmly entrenched in her 'not like other muggleborns' complex atp so she takes all their words like attacks (similar to james/sirius on the train). it just doesnt help. and that pushes her deeper towards snape as well. its like a terrible cycle.
many others lose patience with her after a while and just maintain a distance. a few are downright mean but lily gives back as good as she gets. sirius has no patience and james is too kind (unless it comes to snape himself). all of it just adds to the confusion the poor girl must be feeling.
i also talked ab it a while but i do think that, as the years go by, and snape's ~friends transform into junior DEs (and him too), all of lily's disagreements w him happen in private while her support of him is public. that can also lead to a skewed picture, especially for other halfbloods/muggleborns. bc what is this girl doing????

Lily may have brushed over it but now I’m curious, why is Sirius so familiar with the Slytherin common room? Is it just stories he’s heard from his family and their friends, or has he actually been to their common room?
hehehe anon have i mentioned i absolutely adore when people pick up on the tiniest details i leave in fics? makes my heart swell.
but! my hc is that him and james have sneaked into the common room. for all houses, really, and just because they could. slytherin was a personal challenge just bc so many people they didn’t like were housed there but they did it to prove to themselves they could. it’s a feat of sneakiness, ingenuity, and audacity ykno?
i also think,,,pre-hogwarts, he would’ve seen pictures of the common room from his parents/relatives/reg constantly asking for stories bc he’s enamored by the place but being familiar enough w it to describe it only came with experience.
