Buddhist flags. Happy Kingsday! Today is a public holiday in both The Netherlands and New Zealand. Kingsday is when people across all Dutch cities go out onto the streets. Dressed in orange, children buying and selling second-hand toys and anything found in attics and garages. New Zealand moved the public holiday for Saturday's ANZAC day to this Monday (something the Dutch can learn from). Both countries are in lockdown, so here is a very old one. Orange flags at a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The flags show the 12-spoke Dhamma Wheel, representing the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Fields of Remembrance. Today is ANZAC day, Australia and New Zealand's commemoration day for those "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served". Every year, thousands of people gather for the dawn service on this same field in the Auckland Domain. Not this year. Today we are all still in lockdown, staying home to keep ourselves and others from suffering. Commemorating. This photo was taken in November 2018. 18,277 white crosses were placed on the field in front of the War Memorial Museum. One for each New Zealander who served and died during World War I. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #aucklanddomain #domain #auckland #newzealand #whitecrosses #crosses #cross #white #green #anzac #anzacday #lestweforget #poppy #dawnservice #fieldsofremembrance #remembrance (at Auckland Domain) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_YlwuLpbFb/?igshid=n6si25205hh5

Billions of people around the world are currently in lockdown. Everybody in New Zealand is keeping to their own 'bubble'. We all stay home for the greater good, longing for the day when we can go out again to explore what the world has to offer. But for now, stay safe and healthy everyone! Found these bubbles on the stormy south coast of New Zealand. Who knows why the foam is so colourful here? Old and derelict textile factories are scattered around my old hometown Enschede, remnants of the times after the industrial revolution when textile brought labour and progress (for some) to the east of The Netherlands. These shattered windows are part of an old factory in Gronau, just across the German border. After years of decay, many of these buildings are being transformed into museums, apartment buildings and parks, mixing fresh and modern colours with the industrial grey of years gone by. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #manmadepattern #building #buildingpatterns #factory #oldfactory #textilefactory #windows #shatteredwindows #windowtothepast #patternwindows #brokenglass #gronau #germany #oldmeetsnew #nocolours #grey #blackandwhite #architecture (at Gronau, Niedersachsen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq1YTlXBHjC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=p4fa22r6k13i

Landmannalaugar - June 2014. This place is so full of beautiful patterns I'll have to hold back from posting them all at once. The patches of snow all around, hillsides in all colours of the rainbow, merging streams of water, mosses on the rocks. Landmannalaugar was our steaming and sunny oasis in the barren landscape. The start of the 4-day hike to Þórsmörk (at the foot of the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano). A few hours of sun, followed by a windy and stormy three and a half days. Maybe I didn't much enjoy the rain and cold at the time, but once back in the warmth they're easily forgotten. What remains are memories of the beautiful barren wasteland, nature's destructive creations all around: active volcanoes, massive glaciers and roaring rivers. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #nature #naturalpattern #patternsofnature #natureart #naturephotography #lake #landmannalaugar #Iceland #Frostastaðavatn #Eyjafjallajökull #fishing #fisherman #tinydots #peoplepartofthepattern #mirror #reflectioninlake #cloudsinwater #blue #green (at Landmannalaugar) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqUK_qphx5b/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1spmsolo0hxge

Koriniti Marae. The Whanganui River runs between Tongariro National Park and the coastal town of Whanganui, where the mountain waters meet the Tasman Sea. The river can be navigated by boat or kayak, but the small and winding Whanganui River Road may be equally magical. The road runs 64 km through hills and jungle-like forest. Alternating between panoramic views high above the water and small Maori settlements by the river banks. We found this beautiful wood carving in Koriniti Marae. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #whanganuiriver #koriniti #newzealand #red #woodcarving #maori #marae #koru (at Koriniti, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp_qfPdB_fu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=kzhq4zkf5l0y

Today may have been the last HOT day in a long period of extreme heat in The Netherlands and the rest of Europe. On a hot summer day, what's better than a nice cold water melon to cool down? #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #watermelon #melon #fruit #summer #green #naturalpattern #foodpattern #food (at Enschede, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/BmMR_yeFkT2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=j3m1tuuhb0c1

A prime piece of real estate near Muriwai Beach. In March this rock is a quiet place with a few strange looking humps. By November every one of those little mounds is inhabited by a gannet couple and their fluffy looking chick, each nest just outside pecking distance from the ones around. The best spots are in the middle, who cares about the view from the top of the hill if you can just fly off into the sky? The beach may not be as pretty as the ones just south from here, but the gannets make this place a fun trip from Auckland city. Bring pegs if you don't like the smell of rotting fish! #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #muriwai #auckland #tasmansea #westcoast #newzealand #nz #gannetcolony #gannet #gannets #motutara #motutaraisland #takapurefugewalk #white #yellow #birdsonarock #birds #seabirds #birdcolony #nature #naturalpattern #patternsofnature #natureart #naturephotography (at Muriwai, New Zealand)

Lobelia Deckenii. Kilimanjaro, Shira Camp - 3850 m altitude. We're hiking uphill towards the top of Africa, ascending above the dense rainforest first and then above lower bushes. Vegetation at this altitude consists mainly of grasses and small shrubs... and these beauties, growing in these stunning geometric shapes. A few hours further on, we pass the incredible Giant Groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari), rising sevaral metres high above us tired and mountain sick hikers. PS1, the internet made me sound like a biologist: https://www.climbmountkilimanjaro.com/about-the-mountain/flora/ PS2, we reached the top so as always, check out all photos in this post! #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #kilimanjaro #shiracamp #machameroute #tanzania #lobelia #highaltitude #3850 #plant #circularpattern #circle #green #highesmountainofafrica #nature #naturalpattern #patternsofnature #natureart #naturephotography (at Mount Kilimanjaro National Park)

Tunnel Campsite lies behind a big rock on Karekare beach, where the dunes meet the cliffs. A fairytale-like tunnel entrance leads through the stone to a hidden green oasis with small trees, bushes and a few small ponds containing some of the blackest water I've ever seen. There the gusty winds blew the water rippling into yin-yang like shapes. After spending a day at the beach today this is the first ever 'live' photo on this blog! I don’t know what exactly I was expecting while driving towards Karijini National Park. High mountains, forming the gorge, I suppose. There were no real mountains to be seen, so my expectations of a breathtaking deep gorge dropped. The beauty of the gorge hit me in the face when I found the crack to be disappearing into the earth, instead of mountains rising to the sky. A hidden world of golden brown water and big red rocks, contrasting the green of the bushes growing above. The water provided some welcome refreshment from the scorching 43°C heat. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #karijini #wa #westernaustralia #red #gorge #waterfall #redrocks #rocks #nature #naturalpattern #patternsofnature #natureart #naturephotography (bij Karijini National Park)

Summer is here! Well, actually it isn’t, not here in New Zealand. But with @zomerlou ’s birthday on June 21st there is reason to celebrate! And how better to think of summer than by looking at a big field of sun flowers. The sunflowers from these fields in Alliers, France made up half the wedding bouquet at our French wedding celebration in 2016. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #nature #naturalpattern #patternsofnature #natureart #naturephotography #france #alliers #auvergne #sunflowers #sunflower #weddingbouquet #sunset #rainbowsky #summer #yellow #blackandyellow (at Pouzy-Mésangy)

These may be some of the highest boats in the world. At 3812 m altitude, Lake Titicaca is among the highest navigable lakes anywhere. Seen from the top of Cerro Calvario in Copacabana, Bolivia. Look again and you see there are modern boats as well as a few traditional (looking) yellow ones. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #bolivia #copacabana #titicaca #titicacalake #cerrocalvario #blue #boats #water #highaltitude #3812 #whoneedsadrone #incacolours (at Copacabana - Bolivia)

A pattern doesn't have to be natural to be beautiful. Stare a little too long at all these storeys and you may get just as dizzy as the people standing up there looking down. We people like to create patterns to make sense of things. Patterns create structure. Structures contain patterns. These Petronas Towers are so ridiculously 'patternful', I had trouble choosing one out of the dozen pattern photos I took. We visited Kuala Lumpur on a 15-hour stopover between flights and were positively surprised by the city's vibe and how easy it is to get into town from the airport. Going in without a plan, visiting these iconic Petronas towers was an obvious choice. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #malaysia #kualalumpur #kl #petronas #petronastowers #building #skyscraper #storeys #manmadepattern #buildingpatterns #fountain (at PETRONAS Twin Towers)

A bonus pattern on the day New Zealand celebrates the Queen's Birthday. The white cliffs of... Eastbourne. The limestone cliffs on England's south coast are world famous. And there are many more than just the white ones in Dover. Not far west of Dover are these Seven Sisters, just outside of Eastbourne. Here the white chalk cliffs are lined with rows and rows of dark flint. This is Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. 162 vertical metres of crumbly white, all the way down to the iconic red and white Beachy Head Lighthouse. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #nature #naturalpattern #patternsofnature #natureart #naturephotography #sevensisters #england #britain #uk #eastbourne #beachyhead #whitecliffs #cliff #white #limestone #chalk #lighthouse (at Beachy Head)

Guadua. Big bushes of massive bamboo stems, thicker than an arm and towering up to 30 meters high. They come in different colours and are used as building material everywhere you look. Guadua (only found in South America) is said to be the strongest type of bamboo in the world, but in the end, it's only a grass. We spent a day walking through the hills in the Minca coffee region, surrounded by these giants, coffee plantations and rainbows. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #minca #colombia #guadua #bamboo #massivebamboo #guaduales #grass #yellow #green #rainbow #coffee #finca #buildingmaterials (at Minca, Magdalena, Colombia)

The pattern is the beauty. Thousands of pieces of scrap metal are folded into this giant tapestry. A single piece of scrap metal is simple rubbish, but collected and connected they all form this beautiful masterpiece by El Anatsui. Walking along canals, over bridges and through the history of Venice in 2007, this several metres big tapestry still made a big impression. #patternsoftravel #pattern #travel #italy #venice #anatsui #scrapart #art #tapestry #colours #colors #yellow #red #reducereuserecycle #scraps #africanart #africanartist (at Venice, Italy)
