Cauliflower plant leaves become dinner. Served with Asian sauce and Jasmine rice.

Asian sauce ingredients: oyster sauce, garlic, soy sauce, sugar, vegetable oil, sesame oil.

Pantry staples + plant leaves = frugal yummy dinner!

Cardboard Capture

I was working in the garden today prepping beds when I saw my neighbour wrestling a huge cardboard box to the kerb. Her new couch had arrived in the box.

Like a fly on shit I was over there is seconds. Moments later the cardboard was in my hands and on its way into the garage.

It was an opportunistic kill. The wounded box came by and I pounced. Then dragged it back into my lair for dismemberment and deployment in the garden.

Circle of life.

Odd Bod Soup Supper

Here's another 'use what you've got on hand' meal creation.

Ingredients:

Home made vegetable stock

Home grown spring onion and cauliflower leaf

Left over roast chicken

Ramen noodles

Soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger powder, dried chiili flakes, sesame seeds

Her stalk's on a bit funny but apart from that she's a beautifully coloured late Autumn capsicum.

At the end of the season I was left with 3 immature pumpkins on dying vines. Very frustrating.

So I've chopped and gutted them and will boil the chunks. Then scrape out what usable flesh I can. This pulp will then end up in a cake as it's probably not tasty enough for table eating.

Waste not.

I just came across this video. I knew that birds were ingesting plastic but this is horrifically next level.

It's that time of the year again!!!!!

26 days until Winter and this Purple King climbing bean seedling has emerged. It is in the same bed I grew its parents in over Summer and I'm guessing it is the result of a dropped seed that missed being harvested.

This has me a bit puzzled. This is clearly not a sound reproductive strategy. The seed has sprouted at the end of, an admittedly very warm, Autumn. This plant will not survive to reproduce however. Winter weather will kill it.

Had I not seed saved then this would also be the fate of every bean produced over Summer. They all would've dried on the vine then dropped to the ground and started growing at the wrong time of year.

Without human intervention (me seed saving) how would these bean plants actually successfully reproduce themselves?
