it's a shame we never got a proper episode showing how all the other fbi agents deal with scully & mulder because there's DEFINITELY a betting pool but also an unofficial rule book.

newbie has his first case with them helping out and is about to go interrupt them when an older agent stops him.

"we don't do that."

"but—"

"you don't want to interrupt them, trust me. wait until they're done with... well, whatever it is they're doing. talk to kev if you want in on the bets."

"not even when it's important?"

"there is nothing more important to them than [waves hands] that."

scully and mulder are one inch away from each other and arguing while staring into each other's eyes. a lot of long suffering sighs from everyone else are very audible. one person is watching them very closely, having a large bet on them making out at a crime scene sometime during this week (she will be incredibly disappointed).

"bob once interrupted them and they didn't touch a single case he was involved in for three months. and they're good. weird as hell, but they have the best solve rate in bureau."

by now, the newbie is questioning his life choices. after fifteen minutes, scully and mulder are finally done arguing (for now) and back to looking at the body. a hesitant step is made, but the newbie gets stopped. again.

"see that?"

they are making intense eye contact across the corpse. the crime scene photographer is taking a picture of them for their own running bet, but they do not notice.

"don't interrupt that either. and never, ever, enter their office without knocking. better to just not go down there at all."

after another ten minutes of (not so silent) collective suffering, mulder walks off while scully is still examining the body.

"NOW you can go."

"but agent mulder—"

"doesn't matter, you tell one something and the other will know, trust me."

"so are they... married?"

"ha, who the hell knows. now go before he comes back."
