Coffee, contemplation and more coffee.. 😉 . . Painting “Letting go” 2016 Oil-, and acrylic on canvas 39.5" x 47.25" by Philip de Rooij . Story behind the painting. . Sometimes in life you have to let go. People, things, thoughts, a certain way of living, stuff, etc. Letting go of my own self inflicted- and public boundaries are also one of them. . After creating dozens of paintings in different styles and techniques, and way to much coffee, eventually this painting was created. It’s almost like a collage and the coffee literally became part of it. Therefore the serious subject became much lighter. Since I have two kids and little to no sleep, I needed a lot of coffee to get by. Inspired by the predictions and the drawings of Nostradamus that the end of days was coming in December of 2012, I made this triptych. . Started with researching Nostradamus and his work, making lots of notes and drawings before I started painting. . After putting on lots of symbols, codes, coordinates and colors, I made miniature paintings of his drawings and I sewed them on the canvas. . It was a difficult triptych to finish. Most of the time the canvases were standing in a corner of my studio, don’t knowing what to do with them. It often took a while before I continued working on them. From 2009 until 2013 I painted layer over layer over layer, until finally at the end of July 2013 the results satisfied me and the paintings were finished. . During the first exhibition at the gallery, it was sold immediately to a Belgium collector. . A heart ♥️, a bull 🐂, a horse 🐎. . Fascinated by Greek-mythology where the god Zeus takes the form of a bull to seduce princess Europa. I made this painting. . Impressed by Belgian Blue’s, I created this bull from the “best” features of three bulls combined. The Belgian Blue's extremely lean, hyper-sculpted, ultra-muscular physique is termed "double-muscling". The double-muscling phenotype is a heritable condition resulting in an increased number of muscle fibers. . Of course I made it in my own way, (with old Latin texts, coordinates which are on everyone of my paintings and show you where it’s made, Golden Ratio and a separate piece of canvas which is sewed on the painting) and on that is a drawing of the princess. . Sometimes, people ask: ‘what are you thinking of or how did you came up with that?’ That’s a very tough question to answer, my mind never stops having millions of ideas and thoughts, running all over the place and inspiration is everywhere. . . From time to time I thought maybe if it’s possible (in the future) to develop a machine that you can hookup to your brain and that it could make a print-screen of your thoughts. . I like that idea.. (if it’s used right 😉) . . In my paintings I try to visualize that chaos of all kind of ideas, different thoughts and desires, like a print-screen of how I think and see things. Problem for me with painting is that it takes to much time to realize. Thoughts they are like liquids, start with one thing and while painting it turnout to be something else. Between 2011 and 2016 I started experimenting with different kinds of epoxies. Poring, striking, grinding, polishing with and without molds. Sometimes it went wrong (it became a volcano, with high temperatures and lots of toxic smoke ☠️😬). It was all for the experience and fun. . . Sometimes the results of the experiments were very satisfying. For example this very heavy table with thick layers of transparent epoxy. A welding company made me a set of heavy duty table legs exactly how I designed them. Then I started to use chemicals to speed up the corrosion process, I quite like the looks of it. . . The rusty table legs with the clean, smooth surface of the tabletop with a painting inside. . . Around 2007 or 2008 I started painting these portraits in a small studio on a industrial area in my hometown Arnhem. At night the deserted surrounding, with its massive iron gates and big empty buildings, was from time to time a little bit spooky, perfect for making these mysterious works. I was fascinated by the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci, the thoughts behind eyes, the golden ratio, Latin texts and secrets of life. I was using all kinds of materials to make patterns and made myself some stamps too. On pieces of canvas I made drawings and little oil paintings that I later on sew onto the painting itself. .
