it's come to my attention that not only do we not talk about anya jenkins enough as a character but we extra do not talk about her enough in relation to buffy which i find disappointing both because i'd like their relationship to be thought about more even if we have less material to work with there than we do with buffy's relationship with tara and because anya is, effectively, the anti buffy.

she's the anti buffy in the way that riley is the anti angel (and by extension, spike is the anti riley) and kennedy is the anti tara. that alone is fascinating re her relationship with xander and how, like spike, she's well received by the audience even though riley and kennedy receive such negative attention for being the anti angel and the anti tara respectively (the latter not insignificantly because of racism imo) despite how much more flagrant anya is an anti buffy character to be xander's love interest. it makes sense that xander would receive an anti buffy love interest since his previous two since buffy have both been buffy mirrors, although cordelia's status as such is far more acknowledged and explored by the narrative than willow's, but it's SO glaring despite the show never really framing it as such.

anya as the anti buffy is pretty discernible in her personality considering where buffy is painfully repressed about her feelings and her sexuality alike, anya is so incredibly open about both to the point that people keep asking her to be less open, including buffy herself. she's often hedonistic in seeking pleasure, and she's quite selfish.

but anya being the anti buffy doesn't end there. she was a powerful vengeance demon and thus she didn't have to care about others and was allowed to be selfish and hedonistic and lean into pleasure. now she's been forcibly reduced to an ordinary girl. her initial character arc is about her reluctance to accept that role, how she fights back against it, and how she tries desperately to cling to the facts of her life before she was altered in this way. she's a misanthrope with an incredibly selfish streak who doesn't want to do the right thing if it's not easy to do and outright tries to walk away from the supernatural and the way it threatens the lives of everyone, both those who know about it and don't. her arc then becomes about her learning to be selfless and brave and care for others, culminating with her sacrificing herself to save andrew, a human man and not even a particularly brave or good human man. an ordinary human who's done terrible things because he's afraid and easily influenced and who only does good things now because he's afraid and easily influenced, but anya sacrifices her life for him anyway. which is exactly the sort of thing buffy summers would do.

by being the anti buffy, anya is forced to become buffy.

it's funny that you say that because I hc that at some point Sam realized he never really loved Jessica which only served to make him feel even guiltier about her death. So far I've been basing this entirely on the conversation he has with Gwen while driving her around in Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. idk there's just something about how he reacts to her talking about how she knew she wanted to break up with him but didn't act on it only for him to die on a camping trip that she planned as a pre-breakup last hurrah...it just looks like guilt recognizing guilt to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ plus the fact that they just must have had a very surface-y relationship since he was lying and withholding foundational information about himself the entire time. I feel like Jessica being not actually being Sam's type but the type baby-Sam thought should be his type to go along with the white fence palo alto life he was trying to achieve...mmm so much angst potential, I love it.
