Okay. But.
What if.
What if Crowley was the first angel to ask (question) whether the Metatron's orders where actually Her orders.
(Which they aren't, obviously. This mf is the actual final boss)
The Metatron would not take that lightly.
One: he would be pissed, because how dare this angel question him.
Two: that one question it's all it would take to ruin him. One angel asking that question could turn into every single angel of the Host asking themselves the same. And realizing that the answer is no.
So, maybe, Crowley wanted to talk to God. But God, busy preparing for humanity and having rows with one of her archangels, appointed the Metatron as a filter, a secretary of sorts (hell, maybe the Metatron came up with the idea himself and God went with it).
Maybe, somewhere along the way, he started doing as he pleased.
Maybe, Crowley went to God, but found the Metatron instead. Maybe the Metatron's answers weren't enough, so Crowley insisted.
Aziraphale tried to do the same in S1. The Metatron stopped Aziraphale from questioning further. Aziraphale stopped.
Maybe Crowley didn't.
Maybe he insisted on talking to God, insisted on questioning this absurd plan, but the Metatron wouldn't listen, insisting that his word is Her word.
Maybe Crowley asked if this really was the case, maybe not even really doubting it in a malicious way, but innocently curious.
And the Metatron knew he needed to nip this in the bud.
So, he got rid of Crowley. He made him Fallen.
No risk of other angels hearing these questions. And a good incentive for the Host not to ask questions ever.
This, to me, would explain a few things.
Crowley doesn't understand why he fell when all he did was ask questions. And he wouldn't, because that was never enough reason to fall. He didn't fall. The Metatron threw him out.
Crowley talks to God. He curses the plan. But he never, not once, curses God. (Not that i remember at least, please correct me if i'm wrong). He asked questions, but with his faith intact. He didn't stop loving Her.
And when he talks to Her, he mentions how she said she would test them. And he wonders, he thinks, it shouldn't be to the point of destruction.
Why.
Why, if God had been the one to sentence Crowley to fall, would Crowley still talk to her, instead of cursing her, hating her, resenting her. He resents Heaven, cold and impersonal. He resents the angels, cruel to the world and to Aziraphale. But does he resent Her?
Why would he marvel at Job's opportunity to actually ask, unless he never even got the chance to do so.
Crowley doesn't act like an angel who had an actual personal confrontation with God.
Maybe he never had one.
Maybe there was no confrontation at all. Only the Metatron, quietly and arbitrarily getting rid of a threat.
---
Totally unrelated, but when Crowley talks to God, to me personally, it sounded like he was recounting a conversation. I might be wrong and he just heard this from other sources or the bible or something else. But, if it was a conversation, when would he have talked to God. And even if it's something he heards later on, from other sources, why would he bother asking? Pleading for humanity, not a drop of hatred in his voice?
---
You know that moment when The Metatron was giving Crowley the death glare?
Tumblr media
I just caught that Crowley was sneering right back at him.
Tumblr media
This was the look on Crowley's face when the camera cuts back to him. It wasn't coming from just The Metatron, they were giving each other a prolonged look of very personal hatred.

Crowley first sheltered Aziraphale under his wing Before the Beginning.
Then, on the wall, as it starts to rain for the first time, Crowley starts to move towards Aziraphale first, and then Aziraphale lifts his wing to shelter him.
But, also, Aziraphale doesn't protect himself from the rain, he just stands under it.
So.
Do you think Aziraphale doesn't mind the rain because it's Her creation so it can't be bad? But neither him nor Crowley knew whether it might hurt a demon?
Or.
Do you think Crowley knew/remembered Aziraphale and was like okay it's your turn to be the umbrella now? And he just took a chance to see what would happen?
Do you think Aziraphale remembered Crowley and thought why yes of course, it's my turn now, it's only fair? Or do you think he saw/felt Crowley moving and assumed that's what he wanted?
Or.
Do you think Crowley doesn't want rain on his wings cause they still hurt from the fall and Aziraphale gathers this might be the case and down't want Crowley's new black wings to hurt?
Or.
Do you think it was just..instict? For both or them?
Or-
...I could do this all day.

In Good Omens S1 God says: it starts, as it will end, with a garden.
Now, this could be refering to either the story of the universe, or the story of our demon and angel, or maybe both.
On my first watch i thought: oh, so maybe the las scene will be in a garden.
It wasn't.
On my first watch of S2, i thought: oh, we will have our awesome final scene in a beautiful garden with our two boys (using this as a gender neutral term of endearment for these two beings) having their happy ever after.
We did not.
So, basically what i'm saying is: please, let S3 end with Crowley and Aziraphale in the beautiful garden of their South Downs cottage.
Like, i'm not even asking for a kiss here, not even for them holding hands. Just give me Crowley standing in their garden, yelling at their plants, and Aziraphale sitting on their backyard bench, watching him, smitten, with a book on his hand.
They don't even need to be touching. Hell, they can be 10 feet away from each other, cause they would have a big fucking garden, with at least one apple tree-
My point. My point is, give me the bloody happy ending with a garden.
Please.

I agree, and i need it! However, if i may rephrase? Paraphrase? Addphrase?
(Cause, to me, the end of S1 was them looking at each other unrestricted, when a nightingale sang; but we now know those looks weren't and aren't enough, so...)
I can't wait for the moment we get to see Crowley and Aziraphale show their love for each other to each other, completely unrestricted.
Let Crowley be soft towards Aziraphale, no four letter word, and say the words i want eternity with you . Let Aziraphale hear those words from Crowley's mouth, however timid and fragile they may be.
Let Aziraphale be tactile towards Crowley and not let go, no feather light blink and you miss it short touches, let Crowley not be able to keep his rotating course around his angel because Aziraphale will never not have him linked to his side, be it by held hands or hooked arms.
Let Crowley see Aziraphale being fierce over his demon, and hear him say my Demon with the same devotion Crowley says my Angel, so he understands the words hold no difference to Aziraphale when it comes to the being that is Crowley.
Let Aziraphale hear the difference between Crowley's 'Angel' when talking about him, and 'angel' when talking about any other being of the Host, and understand that to Crowley he's never been an angel, and that's what makes him perfect; and thus, what makes Crowley perfect as well.
Let them hug and be held. Let them dine at the ritz, only this time, let them drink "To Us"
I can’t wait for the moment we get to see Crowley and Aziraphale look at eachother completely unrestricted
There won’t be any sideways glances, no avoiding eye contact, just pure unyielding love

So, i think it's so cool that we learn more about Angel!Crowley in S2, and we all kind of get the idea that he was pretty fucking powerful, and i've read a few posts that talk about it and they're soooo cool and it gives you so much to think about and ahhhh the theories! The possibilities!!!
But, i will say, that while one of the 'hints' is how powerful their half-half miracle turns out to be, enough to literally set alarms in heaven - and i do love it as a 'hint' - i always assumed it was such a powerful miracle because it was between Aziraphale and Crowley, aka between two beings in love.
I always thought the reason it was so powerful was because they made it together. It was literally a love miracle.
(which is also hilarious cause then Aziraphale didn't really tecnichally lie pre se when he told Michael he perfomed a love related miracle, it just wasn't about falling in love (eh, in way) and it wasn't about Nina and Maggie (also eh, in a way, cause they do parallel our boys))

You know what I just realized?
When Crowley said, "that's the point. No nightingales," I paused and went - huh. So both Aziraphale and Crowley KNEW about the actual nightingale bird that sang in Berkeley square? We as the audience are AWARE about it, of course, because God's narration told us so. We also know that, outside the mise en scène, Tori Amos' A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square plays as the end credits for season 1 roll.
But the s1 end credits song, I assumed, was non-diegetic. As in, like the soundtracks that permeate throughout most films, the song could only be heard by the AUDIENCE, and not by the characters. In addition, the characters THEMSELVES cannot hear what God says to the audience - and logically speaking both Crowley and Aziraphale could not have known about a singular, inconspicuous bird singing despite the noise of the traffic. Especially not when the Nightingale sings while they're currently dining at the Ritz.
So the 'No Nightingales' line WORKS for the audience - it's an incredible gut punch that leaves you weeping. But since we never heard or saw either Aziraphale and Crowley acknowledge the Nightingale, did that line have the same devastating impact to the both of them?
Oh, it absolutely did. Maybe even worse than we could ever imagine.
Because Crowley WASN'T just talking about that damn nightingale bird, was he? If you rewatch Season 1, Episode 6, you can see and hear VERY clearly that while Aziraphale and Crowley settle on their usual table at the Ritz, a pianist plays A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square inside the scene itself. Unlike the end credits, the piano version of the song is a DIEGETIC sound! That means both the Aziraphale and Crowley can hear it LOUD AS DAY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's JUST - the heart-breaking contrast this has to Beelzebub and Gabriel's Everyday. When Crowley says 'No Nightingales," he implies that that was THEIR song. It's a specific reference enough to know that this became part of their history - of their rich plethora of inside jokes and shared memories. And judging by Aziraphale's shattered face, he KNEW the significance of the line. He KNEW that Crowley is throwing back THEIR song to his face. "If Gabriel and Beelzebub can do it, why can't we? Why can't we make the Nightingale a reality, the same way they made their Everyday come true?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square is Aziraphale and Crowley's Everyday becomes fact when Crowley turns the Bentley's radio on, only for it to play THIS song. THEIR song. Which SHOULD HAVE brought them together. It SHOULD HAVE. It worked for Gabriel and Beelzebub, didn't it?
Turns out, not every problem could be fixed by making that song yours.

I just realized something. Call it denial all you want, i dont care.
Whenever i thought about Crowley and Zira going to live in their cottage, i always thought it would be at least a little complicated with the bookshop still being so important to Aziraphale.
BUT. Now Aziraphale has shown us he can and WILL leave the bookshop behind (plus if it stays it will be Muriel's, fight me on this)(but also please don't, it's one of the few things keeping me sane).
Thus, i present you definitive proof that their South Downs Cottage happy ending IS COMING. Dont know when, next season or a season after that, but IT WILL HAPPEN.

(Pleaseee God and Neil, PLEASE make it happen 😭😭😭)

Well then i would cry tears of joy
What if the Metatron said or did something to Crowley as they passed one another after The Kiss that tipped M's hand? And what if, when Aziraphale looked out the window at "I think I...", Crowley mouthed, "I trust you" and that gave Aziraphale the confidence he needed?
What then?

HOLY FUCK LET THIS BE REAL
We never see Metatron ASK Aziraphale! We never see him REQUEST or INVITE Az to take the Archangel position. Watch the final 15 again. Listen to what we hear him actually say.
The actual words we hear from Metatron are: "There's only one candidate who makes even the slightest bit of sense, and that's you."
"There are huge plans afoot, enormous projects, and I will need you to run them."
"You are just the angel for the job."
"You know, as Supreme Archangel..."
"It would certainly be within your jurisdiction..."
None of these statements are requests. They all sound like Metatron has already made the decision that Az will come with him. Metatron is informing him, not inviting him.
I think it's really telling that we don't see how Az reacts in that moment to Metatron's offer to restore Crowley. I really think Az told Metatron that Crowley would never go back to Heaven. He knows his demon. Then Az tries to turn down the Archangel position. And that's when I think Metatron says "tsk tsk, I had hoped you would accept of your own choosing. But I'm afraid it's not a request. Whether your demon friend joins you or not makes no difference to me... but for his sake, he had better stay out of Heaven's way. Is that clear?" This explains why Aziraphale looks so pained when he walks away from Metatron and toward the bookshop. And why he seems to straighten and paste on a fake smile when he enters the bookshop. And why he keeps glancing nervously toward the window.
AND and and why when Crowley says "tell me you said no" he doesn't actually answer! Not because he said yes, but because he couldn't say no. He wasn't given the option of saying no.
And Aziraphale is left with an impossible task. I'm not sure if he knew Crowley would never join him no matter what, or if he thought there was a chance. But the things he says seem chosen to try to convince Crowley that Az WANTS to go to Heaven. So that no matter Crowley's choice, he won't try to stop Az from leaving after their conversation ends. And it seems to work! "You idiot" Crowley says, and then kisses him. His anger is directed at Az and not at Heaven or Metatron. Crowley bought the lie - the trick worked.
Now the long wait until S3 to find out for sure!

What Crowley said:
Tumblr media
What Crowley meant:
You physically, literally, have never been able nor willing to leave this bookshop. Not for me. Not for anything. You can't leave it for them. You will leave your bookshop for them?
You can't leave me.
What Aziraphale does:
(couldnt find the gifs)
*Buys food for Crowley (to calm him) and doesnt eat it. Leaves Crowley in charge of the bookshop, even if he must know he doesn't care for them. Gives away a book. Is willing to leave the bookshop*
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
What Aziraphale meant:
Food is not as important as you. Books are not as important as you. The Bookshop is not as important as you.
I want to have a dance with you.
I will leave this life for you.
