I’ve had people insist that I used 3d an photos, despite my assertion that I haven’t. You can see the thread here http://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/2ag3ku/this_is_a_painting_iron_man_by_ryan_lang/ But this isn’t for them. This is for people that like to see the process of an illustration. I tried to break it down, but if there are any questions, please ask. I have no problem with artists using photos or 3d in their digital work, so when I say I didn’t use photos or 3d for this image, it was that I wanted to see what I could accomplish on my own (with a couple of filters at the end). And if after this process post people still refuse to believe that I didn’t use photos or 3d….. I will take that as a compliment.

Quality Control
What is the bar in which you should achieve? How do you know when you are good enough? When should I show my portfolio? Who do I show it to? Where do I go to apply for jobs?
I hear these types of questions all the time from people who are just starting out and want to work in the entertainment industry. I’ll answer these questions, but before I do, I want to get your head right, and start worrying about one thing more than the rest. Quality Control.
There are so many things you can worry about, but all I want you to worry about is always upgrading the level of quality in your work. If you are not doing that and striving for that, none of the other stuff matters. Because your artworks quality is what will get you a job.
Think of it like this, a guy comes up to you in the street and tries to sell you a coat. You can see the coat, and you can see you don’t like it. No matter what he says or does, you ain’t buying that coat. In this scenario, you are the salesmen, trying to get a job. You are trying to convince the employer to buy your ability to work essentially. And they can see you are selling something with no value.
You see, if you are constantly focused on improving and getting better, one day you will be good! I promise. And even when you are good enough, that shouldn’t be the end of it. You should continue and it will get to the point where you aren’t the salesmen on the street trying to sell a dirty coat. But now you are like a NORDSTROMS and people come to you to buy what you got.
Funny thing is you already knew that. I’m just reminding you. You’re portfolio is your magic ticket, and everyone can see whether you are good enough or not. So if you go back and read the questions I wrote above, you will understand why I want you not to worry about that stuff. Because they are posing that there is a ‘end all answer’, but the reality is that can be discouraging and mess with your state of mind. I think if you continue to work hard on making great art all the time, you will be come a great artist. Trust me.
Anyway here are the answers for the questions above.
What is the bar in which you should achieve?
All those you look up to, are also part of your competition.
How do you know when you are good enough?
You are only as good as you want to be, and you should know from the first answer where the bar is.
When should I show my portfolio? Who do I show it to?
Always show your portfolio, especially to pros, they will give you great advice almost every time.
Where do I go to apply for jobs?
In person. Get up and go to conventions my friend. You’d be surprise how many there are, and where they are held. Google it.
I hope this helps and again this is my advice and mostly from my own experience.
Good Luck
