Is Dead Poets Society a modern retelling of the Icarus myth?

So I just did my monthly Dead Poets Society rewatch, and I realized that it's literally the Icarus myth dressed in 1959 prep school uniforms.

Hear me out - we have Mr. Keating as Daedalus, who gets trapped in his own labyrinth. He always teaches the boys about self-expression while working in the very institute designed to kill those. He builds wings for himself and the boys while remaining trapped in Welton Academy and its control, rules, and expectations.

And then we have Neil as Icarus, who gets his wings from Mr. Keating - poetry, acting, learning the difference between necessities to stay alive and things truly worth living for. He ignores the warning about flying too close to the sun just to get a taste of freedom but loses his wings.

It's their own hopes and dreams that ultimately kill them. Or rather, the realization that their dreams are incompatible with the world they live in.

But here is the real tragedy: None of this would have happened if they had never met Deadalus or Mr. Keating. If they had stayed in the labyrinth, they both would have survived, maybe without even realising that they were trapped in a labyrinth in the first place.

But they also would've never known what freedom felt like.

The taste of the sky, the thrill of the stage, the idea that life could be more than walls, rules, and society's expectations.

Their fall wasn't just inevitable — it was the price of knowing what freedom is.

And in the end? Daedalus / Mr. Keating escaped from their labyrinth but disgraced and fired, with his life work undone by the unbearable knowledge that giving Icarus / Neil the taste of freedom meant sending them to their doom.

Icarus teaches us: "Don't be reckless with freedom, or nature will kill you."

Dead Poets Society teaches us: "Daring to live freely in a system built on control will destroy you. But hey, at least you quoted Walt Whitman before you died."

TL;DR

Neil = Icarus: Soaring with art but ground-bound by authority

Both of them die, because they dared to catch a momentary glimpse at freedom

Keating = Daedalus: Trapped in his own labyrinth, gives wings but can't shield them from the heat

They escape but ruined from the knoledge, that showing someone the sky brought them to their death

Also in all the 3 ships, they get white hair after a traumatic event

(on a sidenote you are evil @solo-walker jk but still )

My favorite fictional trope is going to be the two traumatised kids who go through literal hell alone

Almost finished Six of Crows and I just have to say that Show!Anthony Lockwood and Kaz Brekker will get along so well...

This is how they talk about the girl they love...
