A bipartisan group of lawmakers wrote a letter opposing the federal pullback to Alex Azar, secretary of Health and Human Services, apparently prompting the change in plans. We’re a little less likely to die of an asteroid impact,There are fewer “killer rocks” that could wipe out life as we know it.

NASA and other space agencies around the world have spent decades tracking near-Earth asteroids to determine whether any could slam into our planet. All the while, astronomers have wondered how many of these NEAs had gone undiscovered.

Luckily, not as many as they once thought.

The number of potentially cataclysmic rocks waiting to be discovered has fallen from more than 100 to less than 40, according to a new analysis.

Scientists determine an asteroid’s size by measuring how much light is reflected off the surface of the rock, a feature called albedo.

Brightness isn’t always a reliable indicator, however. A large dark asteroid, for instance, can reflect less light than a smaller rock with a shinier surface.

The original estimate was off due to a rounding error from a 2015 study conducted by planetary scientist Alan W. Harris of MoreData, a California-based research company.

In 2015, Harris and Italian astronomer Germano D’Abramo estimated there were 990 NEAs with a brightness indicative of a rock greater than one kilometer, or 0.6 miles, in diameter.

After correcting their computations, the estimate dropped to 921, according to a press release.

Harris recently presented his updated findings at the 49th annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s Division for Planetary Sciences.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says that 884 NEAs have already been discovered, so if there are 921 in total, that leaves only 37 to be found.
