Is it possible that Rick C-137 was unusual in being allowed to keep some memories of Diane, and that the other Ricks were going after him out of jealousy and/or a desire to steal those scarce memories?

i guess anything is possible! i dont see any evidence DISPROVING it but with the way this show goes in storytelling sometimes, i wouldnt be suprised it they dropped something like that suddenly in one of the next seasons lol

MAKING SENSE OF THE LORE IN "HOT RICK"

Ok so im trying to make sense of some of the lore based information we got from the last episode (S8E10 - “Hot Rick”). I i’ve made a little list to try to keep track of what we’ve been shown now and how it might make sense in the grand scheme of things.

Rick mentions in the first scene how the use of the omega device altered his (and everyone else’s) memories of diane.

LORE:

So it looks like based on what we’ve seen in the show so far, and what we saw in this episode that MOST of the memories of diane are fuzzy and vague. But not all of them, some memories stick out more and are clearer than others.

Ex: rick remembers when beth and diane died

Rick remembers a younger diane at the shooting range

Beth remembers being picked up from school by diane but the memories are vague (diane appearing as a green person-shaped cloud but maintaining her voice).

Beth (in the small moments we get of diane based discussion in the series before this) clearly REMEMBERS being raised by her mom. But has a hard time recalling specific memories. Possibly even down to her personality and beth’s relationship with her, because beth says she has to take rick’s word on the comment that diane loved her a lot. 

(ex: “i know i sound like mom”/ ”i wish ur mother was alive to eat these eggs” -> makes her emotional)

EXPLANATION:

This new info looks like it ties in with why diane is rarely talked about and why there are no pictures of her around the house.

It can also be felt as sort of a “losing her again” sort of thing for rick, like it wasnt just enough that she’s dead, now thanks to the omega device she’s erased everywhere, and ON TOP OF THAT now you have trouble even remembering her now too. So that adds into ricks trauma concerning her loss.

MUDDY AREA:

The fear hole diane’s behavior was described as being close to the real thing by show staff. (cant find the article rn sorry.) And its heavily theorized that morty’s mind was able to recreate this based on the information he got from reviewing rick’s downloaded brain in the evil morty citadel episode. 

This makes sense but there is a little questioning at how this could be done if ricks memories of diane are altered.

Evidently there must have been just enough information for mortys mind to scrape together. Rick probably has more memories of diane anyway (as compared to beth for instance) because beth was a child for most of the time she knew her mother and even normal childhood memories can get hazy, so shes probably working with a lot less info in general anyway. (also she literally didnt even recognize the young version of her mother when they crossed over in her memories, so that encourages this theory).

OUR CURRENT BETH’S (c-131) FATHER is shown in beth’s memories seemingly on the day he abandoned his family. He is wearing the exact same outfit as Rick Prime, and has similar but definitely different hair.

LORE: 

This is definitely supposed to read as beth’s original father. But this scene gives us so many confusing details in just a few seconds, so i’m going to try to work through them and figure out some theories.

This is actually rick prime pretending to be beth’s bio father, and making it seem like he’s leaving the family.

MUDDY AREA:

Im confused as to why the art team would give rick prime a new hairstyle even though he has literally always had the same design. He also had that original design hair in ricks flashback of when beth and diane died. And presumably the beth we see in this episode's memory is the same age as ricks original beth was because her design is the same. So rick prime shouldnt be like weirdly younger? here. So there’s no reason to give him a new hairstyle.

MY VERDICT:

  I dont think this is supposed to be rick prime, it is actually our current beth’s dad (Rick C-131)

If this is in fact rick c-131 then why is he dressed as rick prime?

I dont know! Thats weird!

THEORY:

Rick prime (at least to me) seemed to be traveling to meet a bunch of different ricks and try to get them to join him in space when he met c-137. Maybe he convinced beths bio father to join him and part of the deal was they dress the same, like some kind of uniform.

THEORY:

If this is the case then is it possible that all the “duplicates” we see of rick prime scattered across the universe in the episode where he dies are actually just other ricks who LOOK like prime? Maybe they were brainwashed or had their minds hijacked after joining him, or possibly becoming too bothersome? (primes quote about managing people being a hassle sticks out).

LORE:

I do believe that rick prime’s intention when he killed diane and beth was to kill rick. He couldnt see through the portal to see who was standing there and if he wanted ricks family dead why drop a bomb into his workspace instead of inside the house. 

I did USED TO believe that rick wasn’t the only person hunting prime. But im starting to think otherwise.

THEORY:

It was my understanding that:

rick prime killed c-137s family

-> c-137 starts hunting him

 -> prime gets annoyed and uses the omega device to kill diane everywhere as a punishment for bothering him 

-> now even MORE ricks want prime dead after what he did to diane

-> he starts building the murder facilities that the mad ricks are attracted to, thinking that they will get a chance to kill him

-> c-137 does eventually find and kill him with evil morty’s help

This would explain why prime made the comment that he “missed when it was just the two (of them).” because rick c-137 would have had to be hunting him alone.

This may also play into why so many ricks wanted him dead in the flashbacks into his downloaded mind. I used to think that it was because of all the other pre-citadel ricks he was slaughtering to get to find rick prime. But it may also be because they all blamed him for bothering prime enough until he did something like making and using the omega device. The information is a little muddy here but there might be something to this train of thought. Honestly even if the thing about the other ricks blaming c-137 wasnt true, if its true that c-137s constant pursuit of prime lead him directly to erasing diane as a punishment, then that means rick’s grief has a whole new dimension to it. He cant blame himself really for what happened to his original diane, but he would sure as hell be able to blame himself for the omega device. 😬 i can see that

IN GENERAL:

I see A LOT of people not seeming to realize that the omega device was clearly set off years after c-137s family was killed. Diane was even shown definitively in Beth's memories picking her up from high school. She seems to have been erased sometime around or after summer was born.

I REALLY dont think that was rick prime in the flashback you guys. 😭 it just doesnt make sense. Who knows, maybe some info will be revealed next season that proves me wrong and gives more background on who prime was and why he did the things he did but I think it was just beth c-131s dad in “uniform”.

Some people were being super critical of memory ricks decisions in this episode regarding messing with beths memories but remember guys he couldnt actually SEE the damage he was doing to beth until the last few minutes when he and diane caught up with current beth. Not that securing a younger memory of his dead wife at the expense of his daughters mind was a good move, but it looks like memory ricks original plan was to get everybody (him, diane, and beth) together again. I mean thats what the whole point was right? To be a family again? It just didnt shake out the way he’d hoped.

Diane seems to have some sort of background in law enforcement! What an interesting woman, too bad we’ll probably never get to see more abt her again! 🫠 And canonically no body can even remember her so OH WELL I GUESS!!!! But anyway between the shooting range and the comment from rick about how he met his diane having something to do with building robots for the police it seems that she was involved with them in some way. (this also might explain why beth didn't seem to ever get in trouble for the crazy stuff she no doubt did as a kid lol)

I dont think its clear as to whether taking diane out of ricks memories completely is a good thing or a bad thing. (he definitely gets criticized for it this episode and even tried to reverse it, and we really dont see the whole effect it has on him) so i guess we’ll see as the show goes on!

I wonder if the omega device affects video or photos too? I mean its sci fi so anything could happen but its an idea!

I feel like there’s been a lot of emphasis on Rick’s age this season. Just little things like him coughing when getting out of the matrix in Summer of All Fears, him getting out of breath after fighting in The Last Temptation of Jerry, and also the whole “You’re old” banter with Morty and him getting super defensive over it. (Also the caption to the clip on the Rick and Morty instagram page was “it’s a sensitive topic”). And then him being called old by everyone in Cryo Mort a Rickver. And in the last episode the child Beth’s make him as old has the machine let them. Idk if it’s going anywhere but I just think it’s interesting.
