🌼how to restart learning a language🌼

i’ve recently gone through a language break, taking 5 months out to reassess my future. i really want to get back to learning Japanese, so here are my tips for restarting that language you might have been neglecting!

reassess your goals. its likely that if you’ve taken an extended break, your life has changed a little and there may be some new priorities taking over. reassess what you want to get out of restarting your language journey so it’s easier to plan around your day

make small targets that can be reached easily. for a short while, you’ll have to work hard to get your head back into the swing of learning a language. making small goals can really up your productivity because you wont be discouraged by big expectations at first!

slowly immerse yourself. immersion is widely known as a good supplement to your language learning. while you’re in the early stages of relearning a language, it’s really fun to start rewatching that subbed anime you lost track of, or listen to that spanish band you loved so much. it will help your brain get back ‘into’ the language, and you’ll have fun along the way!

revisit your notebooks. if you’re anything like me, you have a ton of notebooks and stacks of random note paper lying around untouched since you dropped out of your language. do your best to collect them up, sort through the useful stuff and then, get a blank notebook and rewrite all of your notes. your brain wont have forgotten everything but starting a new notebook will give you incentive to learn, as well as solidifying the information you already learnt!

take it slow. your brain is a muscle that needs exercising. if you havent been using your language brain for a while, don’t try and run a marathon without training first! there’s no rush. your journey is yours, and yours alone. take it as slow as you need to to start learning your language again and get back into the studying swing of things

Language Immersion at Home

1. Watch movies and TV in your target language. Adjust the use of subtitles according to your level of knowledge.

2. Listen to music in your target language. Spend some time simply listening to the music. Other times, translate the lyrics to your favorite songs. 

3. Read literature in your target language. Start with children’s books and work your way up to novels and classic works of literature.

4. Change your phone/computer’s language to your target language. Only do this if you know enough in your language to change it back.

5. Speak to yourself in your target language. Speak aloud or think to yourself in complete sentences.

6. Play music/podcasts/audiobooks in your target language in the background as you complete other tasks. Eventually, you’ll start to pick up some of the common phrases.

7. Use cookbooks written in your target language. This is a great exercise for learning words you might not otherwise encounter.

8. Follow accounts on social media that post primarily in your target language. Make sure to read the posts instead of scrolling past them.

9. Find a pen pal/text buddy to have conversations in your target language. 

10. Purchase everyday items in your target language: watches, planners, notebooks. Anything that requires you to glance at the text throughout the day.

11. Take notes to yourself in your target language. Whether it be your daily to-do’s or school notes, just practice your writing!

To Polyglots in Distress:

Sometimes I think to myself: Shit, I’m being so lazy with language learning, I’m so behind. Then I remember that I worked 70 hours last week and still somehow found the time to play Duolingo, do a few grammar reps, read and watch content in my second and target languages. Yea, it’s been stressful as fuck, but at least it’s something. Just a reminder that you shouldn’t go too hard on yourself when you’re pressed for time and can’t learn languages round the clock like the stereotypical “perfect polyglot” supposedly should.  

You should be proud of your language learning efforts no matter what. :)

Day 161

As planned, I got started on more notes from Korean Grammar in Use today. I decided to do four today since that’s how many there were left in the particle section. I also wanted to give myself a day or two to go through some of the practice exercises and audio I skipped before (I’ve realized the error of my ways ^^;). I’ve also been thinking that I wanted to go back and look at the dialogues in My Korean another time (but more in depth this time around) so I think I’ll try to fit some of that in as well. The source of this seemingly large (and hopefully sustainable) amount of motivation is likely from having watched a bunch of videos on the channel Polyglot Progress on youtube (particularly their podcast) so if you’re in need of motivation or study tips or anything like that go check them out :) As for the rest of the studying I did today, it was pretty much just memrise I think.. and not much of that either ^^; Oh well, I tried :P

She’s super super super super nice and smart and enthusiastic about everything she does. She’s learning Russian, Spanish and Swedish, among other languages. She speaks French really well and is just lovely.
