I was thinking the other day that it’s funny, Matt Smith was a twenty-something, who in the role of the Doctor felt fucking ancient, but Peter Capaldi is fifty-something and feels in the role of the Doctor like a twenty-something undergrad whose skipped every single class of their anthropology course in favor of eating a month’s supply of ramen and playing “Blitzkrieg Bop” 17 times in a row.

Racism, white feminism, and anti-vaccination

I recently went to a conference for queer Asians, and one of the keynote speakers was a queer Asian woman who was adopted from Korea by a white family in the US. Her adopted parents were two white women who strongly identified as feminists and queer activists. 

They were also anti-vax. 

Because they refused to vaccinate their child, she contracted polio. Polio. After coming from Korea. An easily preventable disease. And she is now permanently disabled.

She also ended up going in and out of hospitals as a child, at various points facing sexual abuse from her white doctors. One of her most haunting quotes that I won’t forget was something along the lines of “I was raised by non-intersectional white feminists who willingly endangered the life of their young, Asian daughter and turned her over to white doctors without realizing how dangerous that is.” 

You can be gay. You can be an activist. You can be anti-racist. You can adopt children from non-white countries. But that does not absolve you of your deliberate actions or inactions that put people of color - children of color - in danger. 

Maybe you’re anti-vax because you’ve never had to witness such diseases first hand. Maybe because some internet doctor told you it’s better to let your body’s “natural immune system” work. But you do not get to play innocent when your direct (in)actions endanger the lives of people of color. 

Sorry for the incoherent rambling. I’m just so fucking angry.

Imagine you and Loki deciding that you are both ready to have a baby. You spend the next two weeks trying to conceive. At last, you are pregnant and Loki is filled with excitement to share his knowledge with the baby. As your belly grows Loki becomes protective over you, he also develops nightmares that he won’t be a good father. Throughout your entire pregnancy you comfort him and remind him that you’re scared too but you have each other to lean on.

I LOVE RATS. THIS MADE ME CRY.

There’s a little rat inside your head.

This rat doesn’t know anything, but it knows that sometimes snacks fall into its cage, and sometimes the floor shocks its feet.  It likes the snacks, and it hates the shocks.  It will tell you to do things that produce snacks, and it will tell you not to do things that produce shocks.

This little rat is not the only power inside your head, and it might not be the strongest, but it’s there and it has influence.

So pay attention to how you’re treating the little rat.

If every time you learn something new, you say to yourself “ugh, I’m so ignorant for not already knowing this,” you’re shocking the rat.  You’re teaching it to be afraid of learning new things, to associate it with embarrassment and self-criticism.

Remember to feed the rat instead.  Tell it “now I know, and that is good,” and let it eat its snack in peace.

If every time you take care of yourself and your home, you say to yourself “ugh, I never do this enough, and I’ll never get it right,” you’re shocking the rat.  You’re teaching the rat that it was safer when you didn’t try to take care of things.

Feed the rat instead.  Praise what you have done, forgive what you haven’t, so the rat can feel safe.

When the rat takes a step in the right direction, even if the step is too small or slow or not in quite the right direction, feed it.  Don’t shock it for being imperfect; it’ll only learn not to take any steps at all.  Feed it, and let it get bolder, and take bigger steps, and give it bigger rewards for those bigger steps.

Be kind to your little rat.

My JtHM phase junk.

Why is Nny irresistible to young women? I was one such female, I confess. I’ve often speculated that it is possibly his asexuality which is so attractive to young and skittish girls. Most young people (or so I’ve observed) tend to identify as asexual before the age of consent, and for all of his violent and terrifying behaviour, Nny is sexually non threatening. I’m perhaps unusual in that I’m now 30 and haven’t yet progressed beyond my sex-phobia, but that’s just me. (I’m mostly over my Nny obsession, but I occasionally miss him. More fool me.)
