Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

For this second set of Miami pics, we visited Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, in Coconut Grove.

Formerly known as Villa Vizcaya, the former estate of businessman James Deering was built primarily between 1914 and 1922 and was designated a historic site in 1994.

The Cathay Room

The downward spiral

Vizcaya's iconic swimming pool grotto, one of only two public sites in the world featuring work by artist Robert Winthrop Chanler.

The grotto is undergoing significant restoration to revert the piece to how it might have looked years ago when it was competed in 1916.

This massive, 158-foot-long aquatic sculpture functions as a breakwater, calming the waters offshore.

It was also one of the first things one would see when entering the Villaʼs property via watercraft. An impressive sight indeed!

Male Red-headed Agama (or Agama agama)

These lizards were everywhere on the Vizcaya property. Originally native to sub-Saharan Africa, they were introduced to southern Florida through the reptile trade.

Wynwood Walls

An impromptu weekend trip to Miami led to some of our most colorful photo shoots, as we explored the vibrant and happening Wynwood District.

Once known as “El Barrio”, investors flocked to the area in the early 2000s, looking to transform the warehouse district into a cultural mecca centered around existing graffiti.

We stayed in a cozy little AirBnB between Little Haiti and Wynwood. It was the perfect central location to explore everything we wanted to see during our short 3-day trip

One of the coolest spots we visited was Wynwood Walls; An outdoor museum showcasing large-scale works by some of the world’s best-known graffiti and street artists.

WITH THE COLORFUL MURALS IN MIND,

I chose to tone down my outfit so our photos and the art would pop. Pairing a white bodysuit with retro navy shorts, we lucked out when we came across this nautical mural!

the entire district was a feast for the eyes, with so many diverse styles of art represented.

Despite spending the entire day in Wynwood, We didn’t even scratch the surface of all there was to see in this funky district…

Guess we have an excuse to head back soon!
