Consolidated story progress 2022-23

I'm bringing my updates onto one post instead of taking up most of what I have on this blog. Art should be the majority! Not repeated walls of text as I try to track some data. Having it all on one post should also make it easier for my brain to look back at my patterns from *checks notes* nearly two years ago (whoof). I haven't really been writing for myself very much this past year, but I would like to get back to it (and more art) soon. The blogger may be constantly tired, but the blog isn't abandoned!

Dec 21 2023 (today as of writing): 46334 total. 105 pages.

<2023: no updates b/c very little writing. Did not, in fact, finish this draft and start second draft this year>

Dec 19 2022: +443 words. 44544 total. Notes: It’s been kind of a while since I’ve sat down with intention, though I’ve caught some opportunities for a few sentences here and there. I’m trying a new POV and having some extra free time helps. I am on (I believe) the final third and I have my outline in a good place. Resolutions and wrap-ups, ~50 pages left. All the respect to nanowimo writers. There’s only a few more days left in December, but I hope to finish this draft and start my second draft next year. 

July 18 2022: +5,236 words since last update (plus uncounted planning). 33,565 total (more than 30k, woah!). 75 pages. Notes: Not sure how much I'll sick to it, but I've been thinking the story will be "segmented" into three parts. The first 50 is my setup, the next 50 is the body and building off the set ups, the final 50 will be the climax and payoffs/end. I'm halfway through the second "arc." I recently read that 30k is about a third of a novel, which is validating and puts me right about on track. They're small enough chunks that I can have goals and planning, but they're big enough that I don't feel constrained so I can still stretch and play. I stopped reading to my friend about 50 pages in because we just caught up to where my writing left off, and I do so infrequently enough that it seemed silly to read to them only every couple of nights (and have the pressure to keep up with it like that). We agreed that where we left of was actually a really good place. “Like a season cliffhanger” and thinking about it like that-- three sections with their own arcs set within an overall story--has been super helpful to how I’m choosing to pace. It’s just my first draft, so it only has to exist, but this way of thinking about it is new for me and I like the way it sits in my brain.

June 22 2022: +1,909 words. 28,329 total (almost 30k, wow!). +5 pages. Notes: this is from two days, but they’re getting one update because I forgot. Working title achieved!

June 10 2022: +1204 words +3 pages :)

June 6 2022: +617 words. 52 pages.

May 18 2022: +499 words. 24019 total.

May 9 2022: +1,472 words in planning. Notes: Wanted to put down the progress :) Reading to my friend has caught up with how far I’ve written, and I’ve been a little stuck on what comes next. But I think I have a direction again. It’s still a little rough on what’s directly next, but I’m feeling good for what’s generally after. 

April 25 2022: +608 words. 22,055 total. 51 pages. Notes: I deleted a couple paragraphs. Things are amping *up*! 

April 25 2022: +972 words. 21,331 total. 50 pages. Notes: I just did a crush scene and I feel all blushy, aw

April 18 2022: +3,979 since last update. 20,337 total (20k!). 48 pages. Notes: Plot is coming together. I don't quite know what is coming after this next bit, but it's the first draft and we'll figure it out as we go. It just has to exist. We’re gonna get dramatic slice-of-life-y here soon!  Reading to a friend is definitely helping me be motivated. The internal sense of "needing to write more because we're going to run out of story to read" keeps a deadline feeling going. Plus, though there's a lot that's still up in the air (ha), it’s fun and encouraging to share with someone and re-read things without the time or intention to edit.

Feb 5 2022: +958 words. Notes: Also character work/ brainstorming.

Recently downloaded procreate, animation just got easier and more possible! Still figuring out some things and having a good time doing it. Weather is warming up! A sun seemed apt.

Taako sketch, pencil on paper. I really liked this part, and this was one of the first sketches I did when I finished Balance

:D :D :D thank you!!! Here have some color and a Taako who cannot believe Magnus got a skirt and he didn’t :P

ID: Magnus and Taako stand next to each other wearing null suits. Magnus, a tall, red headed human man, has an orange upper suit and a red/burgundy skirt that covers most of his boots. He has a dome of glass around his head and his axe is on his back. His right hand is on his hip as he tilts to give Taako space. His left arm is bent across his middle, as if he were looking at a watch. He is smiling slightly and looking at Taako. Taako, a purple haired elf, has a green upper suit and brown/cinnamon-colored pants. He also has his fishbowl helmet and his umbrastaff is hooked on his left arm, which is outstretched in a “oh come on!” sort of way. His right arm is also outstretched and is gesturing to Magnus’ skirt. He is looking away with an exaggerated look of dismay on his face. END ID.

My favorite part about the arm wrestling scene in the Eleventh Hour is Magnus running away and saying he totally has diamonds, but they're at the bank (which by itself, would make sense kind of because you can find diamonds at a bank in a bank account you would own), but then he also says they're in his other pants which begs the question of what the fuck was he doing in the bank before then? Lmfao Why would his pants be in the bank? Let alone a bank in which, for all they know, he's never used because he's new to town? A town that's a closed system and no one has gotten through the bubble since it came up a year ago?

Did this absolute stranger strip and change his clothes at the bank? And just left his clothes lying around at, again, the bank??

Deranged. Love it. Lmfao

I adore the idea of Magnus needing a special null suit skirt because he’s the only one with pants luck. They all come out and Taako gets up in arms about not getting to customize his suit too

So I drew this long before I ever got to actually play the game, but I’d watched many a play though. This was done with watercolor markers, pens, tempera paint, and an invisible ink pen.

ID:

Framed with black leaves, Mae and a figure reach around a centered block of text towards each other. The text reads “at the end of everything hold on to anything.” Mae is surrounded by fireflies and a hint of constellations. Her body is face up and upside down. She is wearing dark brown pants, gray shoes with orange laces, and an orange shirt with a brown null symbol and sleeves. Her fur is blue, though the hair on her head is orange, and lighter blue on her forehead. Her eyes are orange. Her left leg is extended but her right leg is bent. Her left hand is clenched and her right arm is stretched out away from her. She is looking to her right, but her head is tilted to the left, so her right eye is open wider. Her frown is crooked. Opposite of Mae is a dark figure. It has leaves and an exaggerated crescent moon surrounding it. It is all black save for its eye which is large, white, pupil-less, and has teal in its corners. It has several tufts of fur visible against its hooded appearance, shown along the chest and tail. It has two points out of the head which can be interpreted as ears or horns. It’s hands are more paw-like than Mae’s. Unlike Mae, it touches the shape of text in the center. It has one leg and a hand propped against it, similar to a crawling position. The other leg dangles limply while the free hand reaches toward Mae. The text and shape surrounding it at the center emulate the opening credits of the game in font, color, and shape. It reads “AT THE END OF EVERYTHING HOLD ON TO ANYTHING”

Similar to this, the boarder of black leaves also nods to the opening credits. When shown under a black light, more constellations are shown around Mae, and her eyes glow. Likewise, the figure’s moon lights up and long ovals become visible. The corners of its eye also highlight. The letters also glow when viewed this way.

Old picture of Cecil I made a couple years back! This was done with sharpies and an invisible ink pen. ID:

Cecil Palmer is shown speaking into a microphone held in his right hand. He has gray hair with purple and silver highlights, two overlapping pink, blue, and purple halos, and pink, blue, and silver stars and dots around his head. He has purple eyes, looking towards the microphone, and a third, which is different purple, and is looking to the viewer. His open mouth is smiling and shows pointed teeth. Creeping up his neck and out of his right arm’s sleeve, he has tattoos of eyes, stars, dots, and long, jellyfish-like tendrils in various types of purple. His nails are various purples, too. Got a quick black and white Taako sketch I drew up in pen last night. I evened out the background this morning and added a signature in the photo app because I wasn’t planning on liking how well it came out. I don’t usually draw with a pen without first using pencil.

Lup is hugging Taako from his left side. Her right arm is positioned around him and she is pulling him closer to her from his right shoulder. Her left hand is holding his left shoulder and he’s grasping her forearm with this hand. Taako’s hat is being knocked off his head and his cape and skirt are slightly furled out, while Lup seems more steady. They are both smiling.

Taako is a dwarf with long pointed ears, though only one is showing, light green eyes, the lids of which are slightly relaxed, and a gap in his front teeth. His poofy, curled hair is short and lavender-colored, its shading is a darker purple.

Taako’s hat is mainly dark blue, and has an orange-y ribbon at the base of the folded cone, to compliment Lup’s color scheme. At the tip of the cone, which is pointed upwards, he has a short string with a star at the end. He has a light blue shirt with poofy sleeves and crossed and untied laces at the collar. Beneath his collar, he has an undershirt with the same dark blue color as his hat peeking though. His cape is red and clasps at the front. He has a skirt with the same blue color of his hat and undershirt.

Lup is also a dwarf with long, pointed ears, both of hers are showing and the one on her left has two triangular piercings. She has wide, dark green eyes. Her curly hair reaches just past her shoulders and is a reddish purple, or burgundy, color.

Lup’s cape matches Taako’s in color and is tied in a loose bow at the front of her collar. She has a bright yellow, sleeveless shirt on and light brown pants, which show a shaded pocket. Her belt is a blue color similar to Takko’s shirt, and it has a brown buckle.

I haven’t posted art before! Nor have I written an ID before. Let me know if I should keep something in mind to better describe what’s being shown, and/or ease the ears of screen reader users.

I don’t get the tagging system yet, feel free to give me pointers :)
