Fanfic tiktok is wild... I see so many people saying shit like "I could never read anything below 60k!!", or "What story can you even tell in under 5k words?" or "A oneshot below 10k isn't even a story!" or "I always filter completed fics by 100k< only!"
And I'm like...
A) which fandoms are you reading fics for where you have this kind of offerings on the regular?
B) have you heard of short stories? If you truly think every story NEEDS to be longform to connect with people, I sincerely feel sorry for you.
C) Average novel length is between 50k to 100k. I'm sorry, but CONSISTENTLY demanding fic writers to push out fics of that length is insane. Just think about it: YOU DEMAND AUTHORS TO PUT OUT FICS THAT COMPARE TO COMMERCIAL NOVELS IN LENGTH (AND QUALITY) AS A BASELINE.
Yall are wilding.

like. scooby-doo and its characters are nearing 60 years old now and one of the beautiful things about the show is how easy it is to update and reinterpret the characters as needed for the specific story each new SD incarnation is trying to tell and I GET THAT!!! but i’ve always found it so VERY lazy and uninspired to interpret fred as rude or entitled or sexist because there’s literally none of that in his original incarnation. and in the adaptations that choose to give him these flaws, there’s never really a push to give him any new or notable POSITIVE characteristics either. fred was never the leader because he’s an alpha male, he’s the leader because he’s kind and friendly and brave. and if you can’t think of a way to make that character interesting without just making him into a shitty person i AM going to be judging your scooby-doo adaptation accordingly!

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

I'd like to know, because I want to add this pairing to a "Problematic (Non-Platonic) Relationships Competition" list that I'm working on, wherein the ships are being rated from least to most problematic to determine who the actual problematique heavyweights are. Currently, everyone's blowing Reylo (baby's first ship — affectionate) out of the water. XD
Just Anti Things: "It's problematic to ship these two because she was a minor when they met!"
She kidnapped him, used mind control potion to keep him under her total control for three years, kidnapped him, killed his entire crew, repeatedly raped him, left him to die on an iceberg in the Arctic, and her entire justification was 'your grandfather was a fascist who hurt my family historically so I'm completely within my rights to do whatever I want with you'.
Firstly, he's not the abuser here, and secondly, how does the 5 year age gap even register as a problem compared to all of that?
Anyone else find it terrifying that antis will side with the younger party even when she drugged and raped a man repeatedly? It's like they think being a minor/younger means you can't be abusive. And they apply that logic even when the abuse is so clear-cut there's no good-faith way to say she was the victim.
If antis think fiction = what you support in reality, what do they think defending a murderous rapist indicates about themselves?
priorities!

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning
If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
Tumblr media
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
Tumblr media
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.
Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
Update: There's now a Megathread about this on the AO3 subreddit.

I've been working on a masterlist of American animation created specifically for adult audiences. It's almost entirely sitcoms and superheroes until fairly recently. I kinda want to compile actual data and make a pie chart of genres or something.
