Things To Know Before Moving to New York
I moved to New York nearly seven months ago from Los Angeles. I was uninspired, bored, and felt completely dependent on my surroundings and family. A few months prior to moving, I came to New York for a few days to visit friends and eat good food. I always look at that trip as the one that sealed my future as a New Yorker. I visited parts of New York I had never seen before, I walked eleven miles one day and felt fine, I partied with complete strangers and didn’t feel lonely, and was introduced to what is now my drink of choice - the gin and tonic. Despite feeling like I knew New York, I was not well prepared for a move across the country. Every goodbye in LA felt unreasonably bitter and sad. There were many tears and I thought saying bye was the most difficult part. I was wrong. Nothing on the web or friends’ stories prepared me for what awaited me in New York.
The first thing you should know about moving to New York is that while despite it is possible to move here on a few days or two weeks notice, I do NOT recommend it. I left behind so many things I wish I would’ve had with me and brought over things I have not once used since I landed. You need time to decide what is truly valuable. I’m thankful my mom visited a month later and was able to bring over a couple of my prized possessions.
Secondly, it’s important to remember that your surroundings are new and to take everything and everyone with a grain of salt! Coming from LA, I lived a completely sheltered life. Everything had been handed to me, I wouldn’t say that I ever truly worked for everything I had. My family worked hard to protect my privilege - which I took for granted. People will feel the need to tell you that you should’ve stayed home. That other New Yorkers - real New Yorkers - could benefit better from the job you just took. When I arrived in Brooklyn, I thought people wanted to rob me or kidnap me. Turns out they were just being friendly. HAHA
Third, you WILL wonder if you should just pack your bags and go home.  I did. Several times. Especially on nights when it was so cold and I missed the warm familiarity of my family’s home or when I was tired of eating the same pasta dinner 5 nights in a row. There were days I cried because I truly missed my family and friends. There were days where I wished I had someone to go to a midday movie with. I had friends in the city but none that I was super close to. The inevitable loneliness and boredom that come will have you wondering if it was all worth it. When I caught a cab at JFK my first day here, my Russian cab driver told me: “If in a year you are still struggling, go home. Everything before that is just the city testing you.” I believe that now. I haven’t made the one year mark but I feel comfortable and at home more than ever before.
Fourth, if you’ve visited the city before, do not assume that when you move here it’ll be the same. Once a routine is in place, it can be eerily similar to your life back home. I worked a forty hour work week in LA and was in traffic about two hours a day. It was exhausting. In New York, I work a 35 hour work week and ride the subway for fifteen minutes each way to the Financial District. My life here is completely different from LA but I assumed that when I moved here, my social calendar would be filled with events on the weekend. The truth is people here seem to hate to plan. I’ve gone out with friends on a 15 minute notice or have had weekends when I’ve watched Netflix the entire time. In my initial few months, I also had an extremely limited income. The times that I did visit New York as a tourist, I was loaded and enjoyed the finer things the city had to offer. As a resident, I had a few days when water and ramen noodles were considered a nutritious meal for both lunch and dinner.
Lastly, if you are intimidated by ambition or challenge, you will have a hard time living here. I moved here primarily because I was sick of being passed up for jobs and competing with others for jobs that paid $13 an hour. I’m extremely ambitious. I have always wanted more than what I’ve had. Challenges and my ambition fuel me. I want to succeed on my own - not on my family’s accord. I’ve seen people here cut others off to get a position they wanted - and I am also guilty of the same. Employers and people will applaud you for going after what you want. I have seen people drop their significant others for jobs that will pay them more. Dating here is an incredible challenge but i’ll leave that for another post.
Do not romanticize the city. That’s a terrible mistake and I am guilty of this all the time. That’s not to say that New York is just gritty and a bad place to live - it has its ups and downs. I love it here despite all the things I have struggled and continue to struggle with. I have an incredible amount of time to do things I have always wanted to do - like go on really long runs or spend a day at a local cafe without the strain of being stuck in traffic for long hours. New York can be really beautiful and poetic. I discover new things on a weekly basis which make me really grateful. If you’re ever considering moving here, come check it out! You have to experience it first.
