Do you think Sayu ever forgave herself for her family’s death? After all, it’s her fault the notebook was stolen, and so it’s her fault that Soichiro died trying to get it back. Does that mean Light’s blood is on her hands as well? If Soichiro was still alive, would Light have survived Kira? If so, that means her mother’s death is her fault as well. Even when her heart still beats, she cries constantly and has no hope left.
Is it Sayu’s fault Sachiko can’t get better, too? If Sayu was just stronger, better, her mother wouldn’t have to spend her days pushing her around and mourning the daughter she used to have. She wouldn’t be so exhausted then, would she? Do the police hate Sayu, for piling more and more questions they aren’t allowed to answer? Would it be more selfish of her to kill herself, to relieve them all, or to stay alive, so their efforts for her aren’t in vain?
She doesn’t have the guts for either, really.

blow away
200 words | F/F | G
In another world, Misa does not even get to see the ashes. In this one, she does.
Pairing: Amane Misa/Rem
Notes: Canon Compliant, Canonical Character Death, Grief/Mourning
[complete ficlet below the cut or linked above to AO3]
She gasps and frantically scoops some of the ashes into her hand before they’re all washed away by the wind. She holds them close to her heart and wonders why said heart starts to beat against her chest so much faster.
She feels cocooned, like she’s been wrapped in a blanket with an arm around her —like someone is leaning over her shoulder and covering her eyes to shield her from the horrible sight of dust in the wind.
But she still sees.
Misa watches each grain be blown away, but for the small amount she managed to save. A black notebook lays underneath, almost calling her name. And yet it sits so unassumingly.
Misa stands slowly, her hands trembling. She gasps as a small bit of the ash slips between her fingers.
She walks closer to the edge of the bridge, looking out into the horizon. She can almost hear voices singing in her ears, below her. It calls her to the edge, but she doesn’t listen. Instead, she slowly extends her arms and pulls her palms apart just so, letting the ashes spill in a gentle stream.
As they fall away, she feels a small part of herself go with it. Her eyes burn, red with tears that dry uncomfortably on her cheeks.

Thx for the tag!
On the clearest, quietest nights, when the creatures of the forest (unidentifiable to an outsider) took their rest, one could hear the sounds of children running and laughing. One of them was louder than the rest, as if he were straining to be heard (by you?). Still, regardless of where you searched, trying to get to him, to drag him to safety, the scene ended the same way each time. This was always bound to happen.
@neallo ?

“Hey, take it easy. You've just come back from the dead.”
“Dead?” Elnor echoed. He raised his hand to the spot on his chest where the phaser bolt had struck him, but his fingers only brushed pale green scar tissue. “How… for how long?”
“Approximately seventy-two hours.”

Death Note pairing short story prompt, take your pick of either:
Watari and L, familial... something about how Watari has been acting as L's butler, handler, personal assistant etc for so long that line between "caregiver" and "employee" has become blurred in L's adulthood... but he has a memory, a conversation, a moment of reflection, something, that stirs the feeling of L as his own son.
Or something weirder: Near and Halle, one-sided crush (from Near to Halle), references to Near's extreme isolation and implications that it could also be because she resembles Mello a bit.
Halle didn’t understand why Near had called her here.
He sat with his back to her, building up a tower of cards, in thought. His voice was flat when he spoke.
“Lidner,” he said simply, cutting her off as she expressed her exasperation. “Thank you for coming.”
Halle took a step in toward him. “Why did you call me here, Near?” Not hostile, but not pleased, either.
“I invited you here because I wanted to talk to you,” he said simply.
“About what? It’s the middle of the night.” Another step, this time angled off to the side, like she wasn’t really sure she wanted to come closer to Near. “I thought your current case was mostly solved.”
“91 percent, yes.” As a general rule, Near didn’t start a new case until his current one was 96 percent of the way through. He twirled a strand of his own hair around his index finger, soft against his skin, even as he pulled it taut. “Were you expecting company?”
Over his shoulder, Near saw Halle flush lightly, up to her ears.
“That is not appropriate,” she said imperiously. Then sighed, and drew her finger across her throat as if to sign suicide. It had become a slight habit of hers in recent times, when she wished to ground herself. Near couldn’t blame her. He may even have done the same, if he had a neck like that.
“I am sure whoever you had booked for the night was quite disappointed to lose a woman like you,” Near drawled. “They would likely be perfectly pleased to reschedule. You needn’t worry.” He smirked.
A red-painted lip curled in displeasure. “You–! Near, I respect and care about you, but as my employer, there are certain respects you need to show.” Halle’s tone was clear, like a strict guardian setting house rules, but not quite harsh. “And I understand you… prefer to be alone,” she put it lightly, “But that doesn’t give you an excuse to cross boundaries like this.”
Near frowned, and bent a card (three of hearts) slightly between his fingers.
He looked at Halle. Clear peach skin, well-maintained blonde bangs, a black outfit. Something in his stomach curled.
Near didn’t like Lidner’s golden eyes. He didn’t like her bright cherry lipstick or her voice, firm enough but clearly female.
He turned his head back to his cards so he wouldn’t have to see her.
“You’re quite right,” he murmured, embarrassed. On some level, he had been trying to rile her up, as he always used to do to people when he was young. A bad decision, which would lower how well she and Near worked together by up to 19 percent. “My apologies, Agent Lidner. That is not what I called you in for.”
“I’m sure it wasn’t,” Lidner sighed, fixing her sleeves. “Go on.”
Near hesitated before placing his next card. He had been planning on asking Lidner to perform a trivial task that would require them to be on call for long periods.
Not because he was growing tired of the precious quiet of his quarters, no. Not because the ring of silence was starting to feel like a torment, a limbo.
Not because every moment that wasn’t filled with real noise took the form of a news reporter’s voice, trilling that “The kidnapper’s body has been badly burned”. Not because the atmosphere here was indistinguishable from the atmosphere after seven men and women shot themselves, one after the other. After the culprit walked away scot-free, and Near said no goodbye, sure he’d come back.
Or because–
No, Near just liked her voice.
But she would pick up on his true intentions instantly. Of all Near’s extensive talents, acting had never been one, and Lidner was both a professional spy and a very perceptive woman.
“I wanted to ask,” Near said slowly, weighing his options, for he was in a social quandary. The most dangerous type of quandary there was. “Do you like your job, Lidner?”
A pause. Halle pretended to cough, and instead sighed deeply into the crook of her elbow. She was weighing her options.
“I care about justice,” she said finally. “And I’m grateful that you do such good work preserving it. Admittedly, overall, working with you has been… Subpar, as of late. But my feelings aren’t your concern.”
Near nodded, rubbing his thumb against the side of a Jester, before he placed it on the tower. “Thank you,” he said. Shame was once a stranger to him. Now it was a constant in his life; A new wave of it stirred at the pit of his throat. Near exhaled, long and slow, and banished all emotion. “You are dismissed.”
He listened to Lidner’s receding footsteps as she walked away and down the hall, the clack of her shoes against the cool floor reminding him vaguely of the click of a fitted puzzle piece. He listened and listened until he could hear no more.
He sighed, and picked up a neglected toy car from the floor. Ran his thumb over the wheel, watched it spin. He’d had this one for a long time. Near didn’t throw things out anymore. That way, none of them would question his decision to hold onto the empty wrappers for two dozen chocolate bars.
He rolled Halle’s words around in his mind, processing. Dissecting.
Justice. Such good work. Subpar… not your concern. That, at least, had been a very good response. He’d expected nothing less.

MellodraMattic PLEASE 🙏
Matt is an interesting creature, something unusual in the world Mello has chosen for himself (because what other option has he ever had?). Mello’s world is filled with gold-toothed fools and nasty grinning crooksters who would stop at nothing to get a pretty penny, and Mello’s world is full of dangerous idiots who bend and buckle to his every command and make him scared and spoiled. Matt isn’t like them; Matt is clever and witty and he talks back now and then and when ill rage flares in Mello’s heart, Matt’s still, trusting hand on his arm is the warmest thing he’s known in a while.
Matt switches on a song Mello doesn’t care for before he drives them to the airport. The roads are long and the Camaro is cramped and Mello devours a bar of chocolate in record time, overwhelmed by all the energy thrumming through his veins. Matt laughs at him, a quiet, charming sound, earning a glare from Mello that quickly softens into an intent look. Watching Matt just drive, deep blue eyes focused on the road, soft lips parted, calms Mello down faster than it should.
They must be almost there by the time he drags his gaze back to the window, face warmed slightly with embarrassment. Maybe Matt didn’t notice him staring. Maybe he did, and thought nothing of it.
“We’re here,” Matt announces cheerfully. His accent is distinctly English now, the traces of Alberta his voice had once carried assimilated out of him. What a shame. “Tokyo, huh? I wonder if it’ll look like it does in the anime.”
“Don’t bet on it.” Mello shakes his head as he opens the car door, stepping out into the cool December air. That’s right. They’re going to Tokyo, to follow the idiots in the Task Force and to finally catch Kira.
Mello smiles despite himself. He’ll talk to Matt afterwards… Right now, he has a game to win.

Can you write a scene from one in the same in Mello's POV?
yes!! thank you for the request hehe :3c here are about 350 words in Mello POV for a later portion of one in the same [explicit content at that link, and below the cut. minors do not interact.]
“That’s better,” Near says against his jaw. “Can I move?”
It feels like Mello is drowning. It feels, all at once, like Near is holding him under and trying to drag him to the surface. He means well. He loves Mello. He’s a thousand times better than Mello has ever deserved.
Mello is nodding before he’s thought about whether or not he’s actually ready, but then he notices a wet heat trailing from his eye down the side of his cheek, and at once he needs Near to be moving. Needs Near’s attention divided, his mind distracted enough to miss the fact that Mello is fucking crying.
Near’s body starts to move, slow and unsteady. His breath is heavy in Mello’s ear, his thin body more solid and strong than it ever feels when Mello is the one on top. Before it can go from weird-but-good to good-but-weird, Near's hips stammer, and he stops.
“Sorry,” Near says. “I’m— you’re...”
“What?” Mello blurts.
He fails to keep the worry out of his voice. The insecurity, the pathetic plea for approval. He hates himself for it. Weak.
“Too good,” Near mutters, then. “I can’t... I’m not going to...”
Relief and vicious delight overtake Mello’s self-disgust. Near is overwhelmed.
“Aw,” Mello coos, pouncing on the opportunity to patronize, even if his condescension can’t cut as deep with his body and voice shaking like they are. “It’s like your first time all over again.”
Near’s first time, he came all over himself before Mello could even really start fucking him, without so much as a hand on his cock, whimpering and twitching and making Mello feel like a damn god. Evidently, Near has no plans to allow history to repeat itself here— he fumbles for Mello’s cock without moving another inch and starts to stroke him, quick and purposeful.
“What— fuck— w-what are you—”
“I told you I would take care of you,” Near interrupts, voice tight with tension. “I’m going to.”

Young (a Near & Mello early childhood drabble)
Mello is just four years old, arriving at Wammy's for the first time. He's tiny, a little smaller than is usual for his age, though not quite as runty as Near. The memory, old as it is, is still vaguely perceptible.
Mello is walking forward, purposefully but nervously. His head is ducked. He's slightly timid, but his voice doesn't waver when he introduces himself to the minder, pausing just to quickly translate his native language to English.
As she begins setting things up, Mello glances over at Near, winter-blue eyes curious and even amicable. "Hey," he says, or maybe it was Hello, or Hi, or a wave, a nod. Some type of greeting. "I like your pretty dolls."
"Jesus was nailed to a cross," Near says, spotting the rosary around Mello's neck and remembering to return a compliment. "By the Romans."
"He was," Mello agrees, nodding. He reaches out to give Near's hair a friendly ruffle; Near flinches, and yanks out of reach, holding up one of his dolls like a protective barrier between them. Keeping Mello away.
Mello falters, an expression of great hurt crossing his face. He gets up, and storms off to who-knows-where.
It's quite the shame, because Near did find him interesting, much as a three-year-old could. He's not distressed, quite certain the opportunity to know Mello will arise again. In the sixteen years and a lonely decade after that borderline prophetic day, it never does.
