Saw a post that made a connection between Jupiter in the 9th house and travel and while I don’t think that’s incorrect it’s not how I personally relate to it.

I don’t feel an overwhelming impulse to travel. I like travel but I don’t feel like I have to do it. However, when I do travel, I always feel at home*. I love every city I’ve ever been to. The entire world is for me to explore and learn from.

More than travel, I could see a connection with moving a lot. I will go wherever opportunities for learning and growth are; and I will make that place my home. I have loved every place I’ve lived, I have spent time learning about the environment, the people, and the culture. I have explored my city, my home, and found favorite shops and cafes, learned about the native plants and ecology, and settled in until it’s time to move to the next place.

My particular focus on home could be that my Jupiter is in a grand trine with my Sun (in 6th house) and Saturn in 2nd. (The former which I feel has an element of daily routine and the latter focusing on my material surroundings.)

(There’s also the aspect with 9th house Jupiter about life long learning and higher education, but this is more commonly associated and thus I’m not making any spicy hot takes by pointing it out.)

I think calling myself an “urban cottage witch” is distinctly different from either “urban witch” or “cottage witch”

I feel as though urban witch has the connotation of a city as something that is scrappy and harsh, a concrete landscape, and urban witches are innovative hardy survivalists

and cottage witch has the connotation of homesteading, farming and growing things, yes. Making things by hand, yes. But also the connotation of colonialism, of stewarding land in a way that is not necessarily best.

When I call myself urban cottage witch I am saying that a city is something that can be made soft. I share the space with plants and birds and coyotes. My garden does not have to take up space and ruin vast swaths of land, but instead is a small haven of life in a human transformed landscape.

(I also steward my space with native plants next to vegetables, and a focus on native edibles but I would not say that is a connotation of “urban cottage witch”. I just want to contribute to the restoration of my local ecosystem.)

probably the thing I’ve done that’s closest to guerrilla gardening is planting a bunch of shit in my backyard and refusing to consult my landlord

I’m making it better. When I moved in it was nothing but a patch of hot dirt (rocky clay, to be precise) with three sad 4′x4′x6″ raised beds. After almost two years of gardening and “letting the weeds grow” the difference is astonishing.

At first my “weeds” really were weeds: nonnative and invasive plants. But it is the nature of these plants to grow on disturbed ground, so I let them, and as time passed, my “weeds” became unfamiliar to me. These had to be the native plants, I thought. I have yet to get confirmation on that but increased biodiversity is always a good thing. Plants want to grow and the fact that I let them, that I have allowed this, brings me endless joy.

I planted a tree and didn’t tell my landlord. The local electric company subsidizes trees because it’s in their interest to shade the city. (They don’t nearly have as many native trees as I would like but it’s something at least.) Presently my tree is but 5 ft tall. I will not benefit from its shade, but I planted it for the future. It will save electricity in the future, after I have likely moved away. When it is larger, birds will flit among its branches. Hummingbirds and bugs will sip at its flowers, they already do. Give me flowers now, and my tree has done so.

There are so many more birds in my back yard, and bugs too. Foliage increases the humidity, it is not as hot and dry as it once was. Of course, there is always so much further to go in my vision of a lush desert garden but I can sit at the bench I built and watch birds visit my feeder or the flowers and know I have made something that provides for myself and the world around me.

Got any good guerrilla gardening tips?

I don’t do a ton of guerrilla gardening because the desert is a harsh environment and plants need a lot of watering/care but I have a piece of Major advice:

You may think it’s a good idea to get cheap wildflower seed blends and scatter them BUT many of those actually have non native wildflowers in them.

i.e. in the US seed blends will often have wildflowers from the eastern US which can be quite damaging if you spread them in the western US as you’re introducing non native and potentially invasive species.

It’s better to do research on what is native in your local area, the best source I have found for this is the USDA plant database but some states have their own databases (namely, California). I usually use the advanced search to look up my county and get a sense of what is native locally vs. invasive species.

You can also find good info on plants native to your area by researching/talking to local nurseries or organizations that focus on native plants. Botanical gardens and Audubon societies often have such programs. Also if you live in the SW US there’s Native Seeds S.E.A.R.C.H.

Once you know what’s native to your area you can scatter those seeds to your heart’s content <3

Finding Your Deck’s Working Stone

We know that crystals correspond with and enhance magical items and spells, so finding a crystal that attunes to your tarot deck is a useful tool to help hone and clarify your readings. There’s several methods to do this, but it’s best to do whatever feels right for you and your deck!

Getting Started

To start, examine the feel of your deck and its themes. Is it a dark-themed deck? Mystical? Nature-inspired? What does its energy and mood feel like to you personally? From there, you can look into stones that match up with these themes or moods. Even starting off with stones that have the same common colors as the cards will work. Once you have some candidates in mind, you can get down to finding out which stone is best for your deck.

Finding The Right Stone

Once you have an idea of some stones that might work for your deck, it’s time to ask the cards what they think. You can do this in several ways, but here’s two methods that I like to use:

Three card opinion:

Shuffle your deck with the stone in question nearby, focusing on it and asking the cards how they feel about it and its energies. Draw three cards, whichever ones seem to speak to you or jump out the most, and compare them with each other. If the overall message between the cards seems to be optimistic or positive, then there’s a good chance that the cards approve of the stone. If it seems neutral or negative, choose another stone and shuffle again, repeating the process.

One card opinion:

Choose a stone and shuffle the cards, asking them how they feel about the stone and its energies. Lay the cards out in three stacks, and draw the top card from whichever stack speaks to you. If it seems to be a positive and agreeing card, then the cards probably get along with the stone well. If the card is generally negative or else neutral, choose another stone and shuffle again, drawing in the same way. 

If you feel like another stone will get a stronger response than your first pick, feel free to test it out and ask again! 

Using The Working Stone

Once your deck has let you know which stone it prefers, you can use it to enhance your readings. When shuffling and reading with your cards, keep the stone nearby to utilize its energies. When finished, store the stone nearby your cards, either on the deck box or inside the deck bag with the cards. Cleanse and charge the stone however often you cleanse and charge the cards.

If None of Your Stones Feel Right

Sometimes decks are picky. Like really picky. If none of your stones from your collection seem to satisfy your deck, you can try the methods for drawing while thinking of a stone you don’t own, either from experience from seeing it or focusing on an image or description online. My Cosmic deck wasn’t happy until I bought it an entire labradorite palm stone. Sometimes a deck just doesn’t really want a stone to work with. All else fails, clear quartz can be used as a universal amplifier to clarify your readings and enhance your intuition.
