We all pronounce Miette like My-TAY in our heads, right?
#*stares absolutely blankly*#it’s. it’s mee-ett. why the FUCK would you pronounce it any other way#listen. written language has RULES#the rules vary depending on the origin language using the alphabet of choice but they EXIST#and knowing the origin language makes the rules very clear#Miette is a French word and therefore has a shit-ton of extra letters to say very simple vowel sounds#‘mi’ is said with the ‘ee’ sound and ‘ette’ is a feminine ending that has a silent e#therefore said as ‘et’#like the English word ‘coquette’ that is also derived from French#sorry OP I don’t mean to offend you#but it is interesting to find out the way someone assumes a word is pronounced when they’ve never encountered those language rules before#or when they’re applying rules from ANOTHER language onto a word that does not work that way#like the American pronunciation of ‘karaoke’ as something like ‘keh-ree-oh-kee’ when it’s really ‘kah-rah-oh-kay’#even when they’re written in the same alphabet the rules for HOW you pronounce the components are different#I could almost see someone not getting that the final e in Miette is silent and so pronouncing the ‘tee’ or ‘tay’#but what’s really tripping me up is OP’s conflation of the i and the e in the first part#when you stack vowels!!! they sound different!!!! they affect each other!!!! in EVERY LANGUAGE!!!!!!#why the FUCK would you say ‘my’ when you see ‘mie’??!! that is not how that vowel combination works!!!!#that combo either makes an ‘ih’ or an ‘eh’ sound even in English where you smear the vowels together! ‘eye’ sounds are for ‘ei’!#like ‘conceive’ or ‘either’ or ‘receipt’!!!!#i just. *desperately gestures* WORDS#my pattern-seeking brain CANNOT with people who extrapolate the rules of language incorrectly#I know there are reasons and I am not actually angry I just cannot let it go uncorrected#words#Miette#worthy reblog#rambling in tags#ranting in tags

#happy two-year anniversary to the post that (as near as I can tell) led to the explosion in Dracula Daily’s popularity#2022 was really such a FUN year for Dracula Daily#it was endlessly amusing to follow along with tumblr’s new blorbo Jonathan Harker#from a 125-year-old novel#it was really very unique because on one hand everybody ‘knew’ what would happen#because pop culture is saturated with vampires these days#but on the other hand few people at the start had ACTUALLY READ Dracula#and the tension between what little we knew and how it happened actually worked quite well#it wasn’t what Bram Stoker intended at the start but there is a specific kind of horror when the audience knows what’s wrong#and the characters don’t and continue into danger#and so it was just as riveting a read but for different reasons of horror#anyway. to another year of Dracula Daily!#Dracula#Dracula Daily#worthy reblog#rambling in tags

#I can and do do all of these things and more alone#and it fucking RULES#I am TOO AUTISTIC to be comfortable with sudden changes in plan UNLESS I am OUT BY MYSELF#which means no one is expecting to be anywhere at a given time and what I do is up to ME ALONE#no long discussions about ‘I’m hungry. where are we going to eat?’ that leave me snappish and stressed#walking at exactly the pace I’m comfortable with#choosing the money-saving or more expensive option based on my preferences alone#having quiet time to think about the day#not giving a fuck what anyone thinks about what you’re wearing or doing - they’re strangers you’ll never see again#I really REALLY enjoy my time out by myself or taking trips by myself#the one downside is that you do have to pay for everything#and make all the arrangements#but I feel I am able to thoroughly enjoy an experience when I’m by myself#about me#worthy reblog#polls#rambling in tags#and yes travel includes EVERYTHING from driving to bus-hopping between hostels to subways to air travel#I am thoroughly experienced in all types of solo travel

#okay but some of these I’ve already seen#‘soulmates who are fated to kill each other’ gets way too much play in dark YA fantasy these days#it’s just another flavor of Romeo and Juliet where they know their fates in advance#or star-crossed lovers#you COULD make it interesting if the ONLY thing they were fated to do was kill each other#and they fell in love with someone ELSE who doesn’t like killing#then there’s the tension of ‘will I carry out what my very soul is telling me to do or do I lose the trust of the person I love’#I REALLY want to read some of the others though#accidentally kidnapping a mafia boss? golden!#how would you do it? where is their security? are they pissed or secretly amused?#and I feel like dating your enemy’s sibling is custom-made for a romantic comedy of the ‘overprotective family’ genre#I LOVE triangles where the love interests end up together ❤️#those usually lend themselves well to queer and/or poly stories which are DEFINITELY my thing#and ‘too many beds’ sounds like either an IKEA-style horror (trapped in an endless warehouse of beds)#where the protagonists end up in the same bed for safety as much as comfort#or a Goldilocks/Princess and the Pea situation#where they have to try out multiple beds to see which one gives them the best sleep#and they find out the best sleep only comes when they sleep on the bed together#there are some good ideas in this!#writing#worthy reblog#rambling in tags

I love the whole interview but this little snippet most of all:
Terry: “You can usually bet, and I’m sure Neil Gaiman would say the same thing, that, uh, if I go into a bookstore to do a signing and someone presents me with three books, the chances are that one of them is going to be a very battered copy of Good Omens; and it will smell as if it’s been dropped in parsnip soup or something in and it’s gone fluffy and crinkly around the edges and they’ll admit that it’s the fourth copy they’ve bought”.
You can never own enough Good Omens copies.
#❤️❤️❤️❤️ bless Terry#I’m always so happy to hear him talk about battered copies of Good Omens#he signed mine! a very long time ago he came to my local Borders on a signing tour for something#can’t remember if it was Going Postal or Unseen Academicals or what#but I brought in my copy of Good Omens for him to sign#it came pre-battered because I had bought it used in a tiny little bookshop (as is proper)#and since then I had creased the spine (by accident!) in a couple places and gotten it wet in Costa Rica and dried it out in the sun#Terry brightened and laughed a bit when he saw it#he signed it and then banged it on the table a few times for good measure#he said if he had had a cup of tea with him he would have dipped a corner in for authenticity#I left feeling like my book had received a holy blessing#years later I brought the same copy to Neil Gaiman to sign during his tour for Ocean at the End of the Lane#the line was HOURS long and I was very far back. I had time to go get food and return#but he stayed to sign for all of us and I can never be more grateful for that#Neil signed my copy of Ocean and then smiled to see Terry’s signature already in Good Omens#he asked if Terry had done anything when I brought him the book and I told Neil about the table-banging#I hope that story brightened his long night at least a little bit#Terry wasn’t gone yet then but he was declining#anyway. that copy is very special to me and always staying with me#I have a more presentable paperback to lend out and a nice hardback with one of the cool covers#but I love my first copy the most#Good Omens#Terry Pratchett#my life#rambling in tags#worthy reblog#Neil Gaiman
